The Southern Alps of the South Island are host to a number of superb ski resorts. One of which is Rainbow Ski Area near St Arnaud, overlooking Nelson Lakes National Park with its extensive beech forest and beautiful Lake Rotoiti. There are 300 skiable hectares accessed by 5 lifts with terrain for every level of skier and snowboarder. Rainbow is approximately 32 kilometers from St. Arnaud. Ski season usually runs from late June to mid October.
