    Old Falls Creek

Yes, I was right, much nostalgia! Poor Elaine, Gerard's wife as we rattled though memories of 1970 Falls - literally down to the nuts and bolts we tightened together and concrete we shovelled. Gerard says I'm wrong and that Skyline was still there after the Inter. Poma opened - which means it...

    Trip Report South Canterbury

Thank you for sharing - your pictures and videos bring back many happy memories of South Canterbury, especially when viewed from here in Cornwall, UK. We worked at Dobson - lived up on the mountain in that hut - for 89 & 90 seasons and know that road very well from snow clearing with the grader...

    Old Falls Creek

I'm pretty sure Skyline/Yeti didn't make to the seventies. The Inter. Poma was built for 1969 but we didn't operate it until 1970. If the lodge was in the liftline it must have gone by then. But I do remember being told that one of the other clubs salvaged some of the timber.....so maybe some of...

    Old Falls Creek

Re. the first tower of the Inter.Poma, I'm not sure what has happened over the years but I helped fit the "cotton reel" to the wheel. It was a compression assembly - i.e. held the cable down - and in the event of a bungled take-off there was a risk the cable could have been derailed and launched...

    Old Falls Creek

That's the great thing about this forum.....turn your back for a few months and more names, memories and photos appear. Hallo Marg......sorry I could recall your family's name but you were definitely part of that tiny "establishment" who had made Falls their home. I don't know what you remember...

    Old Falls Creek

Yes, it was cosier to have everything going on in the Bowl but it soon became so over-crowded around the Baby Poma.....and a generation of skiers could only turn right! It only took one right-hander and you were safely snowploughing down past Nissen, back to the lift. By the time we doubled up...

    Old Falls Creek

I agree......that looks like John Searle's hair and build. The female instructor in the pic by the Ski School sign might well be Lorna (the instructor, not Dunkley).....though, Renate Haberzetl (sp?) also wore a fur hat. Is that Zigi in the line for the Village T? Yes, the Summit was bumpier -...

    Old Falls Creek

How great to see a couple more 'old faces' turn up here! It's great to hear from you Gerard - we must have last met when skiing with Dick ('Basha' & 'Irish') in La Plagne in the mid 70s. From your photo, you look as young as ever. I can still remember sunny days spent helping splice the cable...

    Old Falls Creek

Hallo. Doesn't time move along? It's hard to believe it's now over two years since Sally & I made a pilgrimage back to Falls......catching some great snow conditions, meeting many old friends and sparking so many memories. It must have been the ghost of my old boss, Dick, that had me out of bed...

    Old Falls Creek

My bet is that's Sigi Haberzetl (sp?) on the T-Bar in the last picture? Was he the Ski School boss then - he certainly was by the time I arrived in 1970? Forget the floor - I'm sure the ghost of "Frying Pan Walter" must still haunt that building......not sure which was most frightening to the...

    Old Falls Creek

Hallo All. Been a while but Falls is on our minds just now - we'll be there for a few days this time next month - first time back during a winter since 1972. My wife, Sally, and I will be meeting up with Andy and others and staying at Cosela. Despite the years and distance, Falls Creek has...

    Old Falls Creek

Hallo Vida It was a sorry day when the old Snow Crystal went....a real bit of history.....and my on/off home for three years too! I wonder where you are in Canada? My wife Sally and I visit friends and rellies there most years. It would be great to meet up. Best wishes Jon PS If you're having...

    Old Falls Creek

Hallo Andrew Not wishing to take anything away from Teckel's better skill at getting photos into this forum for me, it was me behind the camera that day. We were using the one and only Ratrac at Falls to gather snow to keep the Summit T-Bar track together for one last October weekend. The only...

    Vale Dick Humphreys

Another dear lifetime friend sent me this today. "Pommy Patsy" was one of Lorna's girls in the top ticket office in 1970 """Thanks so much for your emails about Dick. It was sad news and must have made you wish you were able to go out to Falls Creek and be there with...

    Vale Dick Humphreys

Thank you but I'm sure my words weren't needed when so many others were saying the same things in Tawonga, last Saturday. Everything we've heard indicates it was gathering that Dick would have been sorry to miss but happy to be the reason for dozens of old acquaintances to meet together again...

    Vale Dick Humphreys

What a sad loss to say goodbye to Dick....but what a legacy he leaves behind. Two great daughters, friends and family who moved heaven and earth to get him home to his beloved mountains for the last farewell.....and what composure, clear thinking and humour right to the end. Debbie's account of...

Hallo Daniela Welcome from the Pom too. You wouldn't by any chance be related to Dick & Elena would you? Good luck with the pictures.....it keeps beating me!

Andy's been a top friend since way back then. That's a younger version of her in the photo by the Gully Chair, posted 27/08. Her daughter, currently based in London, was with us last month......and describes her Mum as "groovy" in the pic. Andy regularly skis Falls still but has a hideout at Hotham.
