.2 degrees here in batlow full cloud cover no rain as yet
satellite not looking great for follow-up moisture, unless the jet stream carries some of that cloud you can see on the satellite that's bringing showers to the SA/WA border over and mixes with the speckle driving up from the South.
Nice to see Falls carpark white.
watch the big high start to push back in from wa and kill this system. the good side is that it will also prevent that trough of r**n developing over the weekend.
This blob of precip will be through soon, it's moving fast. I'm a little surprised that it is as cold as it is, but not complaining.
Smattering of snow at DP, but a mix of r@in as well since 05:00. Temps hovering around -2C.
Maybe a couple of centimetres total overnight, but at least it's white now
looking very very good, puking right now at hotham, 4-5cm and is coming down hard and fast. No wind either which is interesting ....
Very mild at Narbethong overnight. Only got down to 0.6 at LM, but report says 1cm cover- which is about 1cm better than yesterday. Why is it so warm?
tis cold at the other resorts, -3 at hotham now. Was cold all night and to prove it I had a rare occurance for Australia, this morning I turned on my windscreen wipers and they removed all the snow off my windscreen, no ice scraping or getting my hands cold ...... the snow that is falling is dry for Aus standards ....
Nice band hitting hotham area now, but not much beyond that. Seems we are in the midst of another fizzer.
It's snowing at Bullocks Flat right now (app. 1100m asl)
Just got a report from a mate its snowing in the village at Thredbo, heavily at times!
Where exactly is bullocks flat? If it is snowing there I take it it would definately be snowing at Perisher?
Bullocks is the bottom of the Skitube and where the Novotel Lake Crackenback is. So yeah, it's snowing at Perisher.
It's been snowing at Hotham since just before 0500, around 5-10 cm so far.
Bugger.... nothing at Buller at this point. Overcast no snow but no rain either. Got a dusting of snow overnight
> Bugger.... nothing at Buller at this point.
Bottom of LBS looks a little whiter though. Nothing you'd slide on ... but white is better than the green we've been seeing till now. And it definately looks like more than a dusting down there.
+1 just told me it's snowing in Jindy now too.
The roads got covered a PB between the 9am and 9:40 cam shots. Theres a band of precip showing on the radar just starting to hit NSW resorts, hopefully for next few hours.
missinglink alright! i said it was pukin!!!!
Just ducked back into the lodge, its snowing pretty heavily at PB right now. Id say aroud 5 cms so far and super dry. Not much wind. Gotta go get some freshies in
Wahw..warming up very quicly at TB AWS...I hope that doesn't mean R"#n for midday..???
it also hasnt recorded any precipitation so i wouldn't be trusting it just yet.
Well, the nice snow that was falling at around 1000m has turned to a really wet snow & rain mixture.
Looks like Thredbo got a nice dusting in the village:
Yeh i presume TB AWS is referring to the thredbo top station AWS? Yeh it has been warming up inconsistently, now it seems to be dropping again. Yeah it hasn't recorded any precipitation, the wind maybe affect the precip going in the rainguage? But yeh the coldest air hasn't even come through the alps yet, should conitnue to get more interesting later this arvo down there. With IMO possibly up to 25cm accumulated. Lets hope they get another solid band go through, or this one to keep backbuilding.
TB AWS seems to be cooling right back down now, wouldn't be suprised if that valley view webcam at Thredbo started picking up snow again soon.
EDIT: It just dropped 1.7c in 10mins, boy is it falling rapidly there now.
Should be interesting
Am I dreaming and tell me if I am wrong but by looking the last sattelite picture (10.30 am), this band of cold air in the bight (from wa to tas) seems to be pushing actively towards the continent ???
Sorry, probably havent posted it on the right tread (forgot was obs only)
Yeah, PD, not unusual for snow to turn to rain or wet snow at those lower levels as the RH increases.
The Mt Gambier soundings that was just picking up the cold air this morning is looking better than expected although I don't have time to examine the details. Approaching -28C at 500hPa, -9C at 700hPa and about -2 at 850hPa is pretty good.

And now it's snowing heavily again...
Just spoke to a friend up at Perisher who said it snowed pretty hard for a while and accumulated around 5cm before it let up. Now it's puking up there again.
Go Dougie go!!!!
Keep up the good work son
Blackheath, can you explain how the the hPa figues actually relate to elevation? I know the 850hPa is the one we look at the most and recall it's around 1500m - how about the others?
The heights of hPa move around according to pressure as far as I know. 1000M ASL is roughly at 900hPa and 2000M ASL is roughly 800hPa but you can calculate your own heights if you know how to plot your own GFS or you can view them on Weatherzone too. The main one is 850hPa which is roughly at 1500 ASL (but can be 1400 ASL) and this needs to be below zero for good snowfalls and your temp at 700hPa needs to be below -8C at least and temp at 500hPa needs to be below -26C (at least) to create decent instability. But those figures are arbitary when orographics and wet snow from prefrontal cloud bands are at play. Lifting lowers the snow level (moist adiabatic rate) which is not related to the air mass temp so much.
It's been snowing fairly consistently at Perisher since early this morning.
Looking good comrades.
Just got a call from a mate on Buller, says it's just started snowing again.
Glad to hear it's still snow - the temp at Buller is starting to look a little dangerous.
According to the Buller website it's -0C. Much better than +0C at least.
Still 14.9 in Melbourne, but temperatures have dropped about a degree in the last hour in Scoresby, Frankston, Moorrabbin.
At Rhyll on Phillip Island, there has been a drop of 2c in the last hour. Winds have turned westerly at these stations, and you can see showers coming in and heading towards the mountains.
Note the temperature dropping into the negative at Baw Baw.
Behind at Aireys Inlet, winds have turned SW. Beyond Cape Otway they are southerly.
Thats later than projected which might mean its moving a little slower than projected which has got to be a good thing.
nice sw rainband going through melbourne now heading for alps
There was raining solidly in Heidelberg for a while some point last night, however the Viewbank AWS is showing 0mm (no, not just the after 9am reading)....
From Thredbo website at 2.10pm
10cm of fresh white snow has blanketed the mountain, where it continues to fall. There are moderate to strong winds blowing snow across the peaks.5cm in the Village.
perisher announced 8-10cm over the resort
Have a look at the buller village cam it just puked go the comarision between 1 and now
temp just dropped by approx 1 deg at Buller too - now -1.3C. Was just on the phone with someone up there who said it was snowing heavily - showers moving steadily through the eastern suburbs of Melb now and cold down here too.
Speaking of the showers:
(set frames to 20+ to get a better idea)
Looks like it could slip slightly to the east but fingers crossed.
What's it looking like at Falls Creek at the moment? Any news on freshies up there? Was thinking about going for a bit of a slide this weekend......
Great link Recon, still looks like some steady/heavy showers over Adelaide, which somewhat supports what Sandy suggested with the feed in from inland WA.
An approaching front currently over Victoria will bring windy conditions with
showers and snow showers above 1300 metres, mainly to western slopes. Snow
showers will continue Wednesday and lower to 1000 metres in the colder stream
following the front. Fine condition will return as the next high develops and
passes south of the region Thursday and Friday. Significant rain is expect to
fall as snow above 1600 metres this weekend as a trough approaches and crosses
Especially good news for the suspected major rain event some people have been talking about this weekend =)
There is currently some visibility on the FC cams... looks like a bit of fresh stuff... not all that much though. However it still looks very cold, the stuff on the carpark doesnt look like its wet at all, which is unusual.
Hmmmm... who knows how to get a copy of the currently displayed snow cam image??? All i can save is the stupid Ford ad and the border of the image.
Radio report just said 12cm fallen at falls and up to 20cm expected tonight.
