Descending parcel of air = compressed and heated- visible on the temp advection plots. Reduces lapse rates.

Subsidence is when your house falls down a mine shaft in Lithgow but the mortgage remains the same!
It may snow in Lithgow on Sunday......

Keep Falls up your sleeve as plan B. If its heavy snow to low levels then the Harrietville approach could have issues.

EC suggesting southern resorts will do better; perhaps 40cm for Buller; northern resorts, perhaps 30cm.
IMO I'm not entirely buying that.

For a matter of comparison, GFS....

Still 30-40cm range. Looks like Falls/Hotham and NSW resorts just a bit better than Buller, contrary to EC.

It's the kind of system that has fruit for everyone.

Hmm I'm in the same boat, saying in Bright and looking at Hotham. If it snows low does that = hours of traffic jam up the mountain from Harrietville?

A low level heavy system like this is shaping up to be often leads to either convoys up and down or road closed.

I think the snow quality will be great and the quantity good but not a huge amount. Usually when we get very cold air it is also very dry giving us low level play snow without much more up high. Sunday should be a great day out with cold conditions keeping Saturdays fresh snow in fine condition. 20-30cm all round will be a good score.

Wonder how the Monaro will fair out of this. Second half of the system looks like a special for snow from Jindy through Bombala and perhaps into Cooma as well. Roads could be interesting. I've set myself up to work from Jindy on Monday should travel prove a challenge.

BoM are saying 45-60kph in the morning, and 40-50kph later on Saturday for Buller.
    50-60kph on Sunday.

Sounding like it's gonna be real busy in the Bull Run Bowl, or worse just Cow Camp and the Chamois Bowl.

Same goes for practically all of the resort O/N parking situations. Exactly the reason why I left to go back to Sydney this weekend. It will be a bun fight until I return on Monday.;)

Just look at these temps & saturated low levels in GFS's Skew-t for Sunday 1am (around Thredbo). Snow possible to 600m in Southern NSW IMO. Snow in downtown Tumbarumba (~650m) is not out of the question @Kelpieboy

I wouldn't bank on low wind Saturday imo. This is the first leading low to peak south west of Tassy since June... if I remember correctly.... so it's a building beast. Similar to what hit Perth a few weeks back.... but I could be wrong.

Issued at 2:22 pm Friday, 17 August 2018.

Cold and squally winds developing across the weekend.

Northerly winds are expected to strengthen ahead of a cold front that will cross Victoria Friday night and Saturday morning.

DAMAGING WINDS, averaging 60 to 70 km/h with peak gusts of around 100 km/h are expected to develop over Alpine areas of eastern Victoria during the early hours of Saturday morning.

Local showers and thunderstorms will possibly produce damaging wind gust of around 90 km/h over parts of western and central Victoria during Saturday afternoon.

Strong wind gusts are likely to persist into Sunday through parts of central and eastern Victoria, particularly about the coast and ranges.

Locations which may be affected include Horsham, Warrnambool, Bendigo, Maryborough, Ballarat, Geelong and Melbourne.
