Thar she blows, winter is in winds.

For the first time in over six months I've had to go outside and get about in the teeth of norwester to clear the decks and yard of the loose objects that accumulated over summer.

Not cold.

I observe lots of cold speckled cloud sweeping across the bight and not pushing north . Can the boffins explain why it’s not pushing north ? ( maybe in a more appropriate discussion area )

I observe that winds in the Alpine have been pretty solid since late yesterday.

Enough to rattle things a little here on the leeward last night. And with a good Westerly feed. Not seen a lot of that since last Winter which is uncommon.

Thredbo with plenty of gusts over the 100k/h. Up to 107 and still in the 90’s. Temps still falling slightly and around 2 degrees at the BOM 6:00 a.m. update.

Perisher not nearly as windy as Thredbo TS and above 4 degrees.

I observe only one small patch, on one morning of frost horing and only a couple of frosts this autumn (Spencer's creek valley), the ground has not cooled. The previous 2 years had frosts and horing from March onwards, this has been a very warm autumn in the mountains.

As far as the SE of the continent goes, it's been years since we've had the soil moisture content that we have now (@Majikthise might have more input here):
Moist soils conduct heat vertically more efficiently
than dry soils. During a sunny day, the surface of dry soils
warms more quickly by day and cools more quickly at night
(Russell 1973).
Additionally, through the process of latent heat exchange, the high humidity slows the cooling processes that typically exacerbate frost so will take some much cooler temps to get any decent frost out of this Autumn IMO.

Max of 9.7 °C here in Shelley VIC (763 m AMSL), currently 6.5 °C @ 92% RH.

Frontal cloud cover conditions below are characteristic of the 'clipper' type; localised on the hills and ranges. First photo in the valley at 14.5 °C with much sun, whereas Koetong shown in the second and third lay under dark cloud at 9.3 °C (mid-late afternoon). Only a ~ 350 m difference in altitude between them.

Brrrr .... that sound of Alpine winds through the gum trees.

Winter is here
It is…, and believe it or otherwise; very light windblown snow was just falling here at Moonbah. Lasted all of 3 minutes but grandkids thought it was cool to watch. And its sunny here but that cloudband is sitting not too far off. Happens occasionally. @Goanna noted the same a few paddocks away.

I observe I may have to cancel the booking out of Corin Forest Resort instead of Thredbo end of June week for our mob... but I've been fooled before!
