We have been enjoying white Christmas’s for the last few years and have come to love Sun Peaks so much so we have made it our destination for 3 of the last 5 trips (breaks in between) and although we really like being there we don’t want to flog it to death. That being said we already have plans to go back there in 19/20 season...

This year is one of the “break” years and ever since our honeymoon (which did not happen due to budget constraints) some 17 years ago, we wanted to spend time in Banff and in particular at the Chateau Lake Louise so this year we are finally doing it! One thing I have quickly learned is that as soon as you have more than one destination it really pushes up your budget... ouch

We are almost all locked in all apart for 2 nights which should be confirmed today, our trip is:
    - 13 nights Revelstoke
    - 6 nights Banff
    - 2 nights Lake Louise
    - 3 nights Silverstar

Decided to do several places because we have booked a car this year so getting around should be easy, albeit tough snow driving, and we want to see and do different things. The car will be mostly parked while at Revelstoke but it will be fully used the rest of the trip. Booked the car (Jeep Grand Cherokee M&S tyres) through Enterprise.

We added Silverstar in at the end to break the drive back to YVR and to also check it out for future years.

Air tickets were QF points and we used a travel agent for the accommodation all except for Banff where we booked direct. Only thing left to do is to decide how we do the ski tickets and have been considering getting Mountain Collective tickets for the 3 of us (14 year old in tow) I have to sit down and do the sums, this year we would get benefit from the Thredbo 2 days add on. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Any suggestions on things to see and do while we are traveling would be appreciated including restaurant suggestions.

Frisby Ridge sushi/Asian in downtown Revelstoke.
Walliser Stube for fondue at Chateau LL

Good plan on splitting the drive from the rockies back to Vancouver. Make sure to leave lots of time for the drive from Vernon to YVR. Plan on checking the weather the day before and leaving then if a big storm is coming in.

We are at Revelstoke first from the 20th Dec for 13 nights - I have had to hand over the kidney for that one... Chateau LL funny enough is cheaper

You said dates are locked in for accom but is often easy to cancel accom in canada with no penalty. I just did pretty much 4 weeks around powder highway and similar area this year from 26th December. Rev is awesome but I would chop off 3-4 days and hit kicking horse on the way to Banff (ignore this if you aren’t decent intermediate or advanced skiers/borders)

Awesome skiing and really good/cheaper accomodation on snow than Rev including balcony hot tub etc

You will literally be driving right past Kickijg Horse. The runs are easily visible from the TransCanada. Even if you decide not to ski it, at least take the gondola ride and go to Eagle Eye for lunch.

If you're driving right past and have the time you'd be crazy not to ski it at least for the day. It's a unique place. The top bowls are amazing

Hi I'm guessing 2 days skiing at Lake Louise so suggest White Horn Bistro and Temple Lodge (the upstairs restaurant Sawyer's Nook) for lunch. White Horn the more exxy of the two. Concur re Walliser Stubbe is fabulous but high end so check the menu/price. The Chateau has lots of options. Silver Star also lots of options Silver Grill for fine dining and The Den or Long Johns for more basic options. Anywhere will be fine.

I definitely second a trip to KH too. We did the Banff-KH-Revelstoke trip last year and a Kicking Horse is too awesome a mountain to drive right past. It was my 2nd visit and I’ll be back next year too.

13 days is also a really long stint at Revvie too. We did 5 days and felt it was plenty.

Stopping at KH also breaks up the journey nicely from Banff to Revvie. I wouldn’t want to be driving through the pass from Golden to Revelstoke after a long days drive. The road can be treacherous on many levels.

Kicking horse remains our favourite resort amongst our group. The snow quality was also markedly better than Revvie, much quieter and the mountain terrain is awesome too.

Either way you’ll have an amazing time I’m sure!

We are going to Revestoke on 12/1/19 for 5 days and are staying on the mountain. Does anyone know where we can buy groceries. Staying in a 2 bedroom apartment but can't find any info on where to buy groceries?

Good times. We’re doing our 4th powder highway trip. Something similar this time actually. We usually drive one way to Calgary and fly out back to yvr but decided to drive back this time. We are utilising the powder Alliance benefits with a Wh20 season pass and also a mountain collective pass for the AB/ Revy end of the trip. We’re going Vancouver to Silver Star never been to Silver Star 4 nights down to Nelson for 9 nights usually double the time in Nelson. Down to Idaho and Schweitzer to see what the hype is aboot for 3 nights. Then onto Castle Mountain for 1 night only before keeping the wife happy with a full days shopping in Calgary. Always the best deals there. Then onto Banff for the Sunday brunch which is worth the plane ride alone. 2 days at Lake Louise and 2 at Sunshine before 4 nights at Revelstoke. We’re probably the only people on this planet but actually dislike Revy. The chairlifts are just a massive bottle neck. We’re going to be there on family day also..... much prefer KH but Golden is terrible in comparison to Revy. And the helisking is much cheaper out of Revy. I get 2 days this year. We then drive back to Vancouver and will stop at Kelowna or Kamloops for a nosey. Possibly detour for a one day whistle or find something unique in Vancouver to do. We leave Revy and have 2.5 full days before departure. Definitely look into Mountain Collective but you’d probably want to ski Sunshine for atleast 1 day also to really benefit. Although 10 or so days with 8 at 50%off will definitely cover you. Happy times

There was a community Christmas dinner at Revelstoke's St Francis Church hall in Mackenzie ave last year and from all reports it was a great event. Might be worth a look in.

    Trip update:

Our flights from Sydney were to San Francisco and it has to be said that US border control is still really bad, from landing it took us 2 hours to get out and we were close to first off the plane, as we were being processed the other boarder patrol officer (yes only 2 working for a 747 load of people said to our guy “ok I’m off to cruise ship training”). The flight into Vancouver was polor opposite 30 minutes and we were out.

Revelstoke - well put simply it’s a big mountain! We arrived with no snow at the bottom of the mountain, so no ski in ski out as advertised. But the snow at the top of the mountain is perfect. We have now been here over a week and are only getting used to it. Did a run today that was 1,473 meters of vertical and that wasn’t all the way to the bottom (still not skiable). Every run feels like a black run even if it’s a blue, some of the blacks, in sections feel like a dark blue (if that makes sense). The green runs are all skinny access trials zigzagging down the mountain. We have found some great runs so far and are looking forward to exploring some more runs that were not previously opened.

The feeling and atmosphere is very different to Sun Peaks, Sun Peaks is very family oriented and everybody is extremely friendly, Revelstoke not so much.

I thought similar about the vibe. Its more of a 20 year olds party vibe. But people were nice. Did the run from top to bottom holy sh1t leg burner

FWIW the US government is going through a partial shutdown because of a political squabble over border security funding. Those CBP officers at SFO aren't being paid until the mess is resolved, but legislation forces them to continue working because they are deemed to be essential services. So it's hardly surprising if they are understaffed and taking their time.

Yep, Revy is steep and big, the master plan that included a whole lot more beginner and intermediate terrain is still gathering dust AFAIK. Although there's a huge amount of terrain accessible from only three lifts, the best stuff is accessed with a bit of bootpacking. Way more suited to serious riders and skiiers than families though, it's a place that can certainly test your skiiing/riding and intestinal fortitude. :)

Al Raine (of Sun Peaks) bailed from Revelstoke as a consultant because they ignored his advice to open a balanced range of terrain in the first years. They don't have the capital to plug the gaps.

Yep. Spent 3 days at Revie late January after doing 2 weeks at Sun Peaks. I loved it. Mrs Astro was sick of the Green Goats track after 2 runs, and didn't ski again. Youngest tried to ski with me, but I was always sending him back down on the Gondola after a run or two.

9 North American seasons in a row, we have never returned.

Great if you love steep and deep. But very little for not so confident skiers.

BTW. Belted down snow the last day. Was epic.

If you are in Revie at the moment, Pulse have 30-50% of boots and skis.

They had some powder skis in there that looked wider than my snowboard LOL

Yeah its a real bottleneck that lift
The advice from the owner of the airbnb we stayed at was:
    Get there 1 hour early
Have a beer in each pocket
    Drink 1 beer
Give the 2nd one to him when you see him
    Ski the North bowl
