FC has had a ‘standard can’
Hopefully there is some more in this at the end of the day. Looks OK on the radar.
More from Buller:
Looks more like 5cm on this side.
Sun is out on Friday Flat, Thredbo
A few flurries on the Jindy North shore
Some nice bbq deck accumulation overnight at DP ~5cm, and still snowing lightly
Trying to poke it’s head out at Buller too.
I've been looking at snow systems for way too long and there's always been a fairly strong correlation between negative temps at the resorts, precipitation and accumulation
Buller went negative at 5am yesterday morning and since then has had 20mm+ of precipitation but only 3 or 5 mm of snow?
Funky winds and funky temperatures. Wasn’t Buller’s best aspect.
I don't think thats made such a difference in the past
. BOM and Ms. Bunn have upgraded the forecast for Falls Ck. and Mt.
Stirling to 20 cms ,(BOM have used the word POWDERY) by Sat. afternoon..
Whiskey Flat on the Hotham to Dinner Plain XC ski trail has had a mild top up since yesterday. It looks almost rock hopper Nordic skiable and looks less slushy now.
Baw Baw looks much improved. @chriscross hang in there. Sunday could be your MSG ski day !
Incoming on the BOM radar. We just need that blob to push up NE.
Currently 2.8° C here, with a South-Westerly rainband moving up Central VIC.
BoM for N VIC/SW NSW has dropped the snow levels down to 800 m (from 900 m), so odds are looking better today.
Interesting first up this morning at PV. Although BOM shows temps in the negatives all night, there was a new layer of ice and then a few cms of fresh snow on that. Easily discernible and initially it was pick a line through the fresh where you could. Then the customers sorted it.
One of the ops folks suggested some precipitation between snowfalls and it looked that way.
Regardless, a base is forming in high traffic and snowmaking areas. Hopefully tonight’s and tomorrow’s obs are showing a reasonable snowfall as there’s not much to push around according to one of the groomers.
Northcote temp feels like it just dropped right down... must be close to rain but as yet no drops!
first sprinkles outside my window here in North melbs.
Classic mizzly wetness in the air at Buller. Couple of cm on the ground from last night.
im just about to run down to nm to pick up a hire car, and yeah, its damned cold and looking very grey indeed, most looks to be sliding south of town
Few flakes just starting to join the party now
SW'ly change has officially made landfall; Cape Otway @ sea level down to 7.5° C with just under 10 mm in the gauge.
Definitely has improved in the past half an hour in the village, snowing nicely now.
Snow on Buller Village cam.
Nice precip. band settling in there.
When Mount Mawson has a better looking base than most Aus Mainland Resorts...
If we could just get that precipitation blob currently over Melb's to push over toward the alpine ridge it would be game on!
Just you wait.
I spy a nice big precip band moving through Ballarat.
Back down to 6c here in Emerald.
Persistent rain here in Elwood for last hour and a half. By the looks of the radar this is moving east - Baw Baw to be main beneficiary?
Ballarat (435 m) has now been struck by the South'Wester; 5.0° C with 4.0 mm registered.
Cold airmass approaching 37° S.
Finally coming down properly at Buller. Had everything in the last hour, rain, ice balls, snow, hail. Now seems to be on though.
Down at Somers on the MP and has been coming down for a while now, heavy at times and some hail thrown in.
Baw Baw is the direct line from here so they must be getting some.
It’s cold to, proper cold
Big fat flakes on their cams now.
Its cold enough now at the high perch ,just need some moisture ,due around 4pm I guess. Then lets see what comes to the party.
Freezing cold and dark and lots of rain just hit the inner North of Melb
Lowest atmos thickness moving through Melbourne over the next 3 hours or so.
Nice and fat flakes coming down at Buller.
Interesting to see the current temp differences between Benalla and Wangaratta. Suggests the line of colder air runs between the two
You can see the cold front on Melbourne’s Doppler radar:
Our north-facing window has had some damage (thanks to the events of Wednesday night) and I can’t go out to get stuff to fix it, so I would very much appreciate the SW wind change to come sooner rather than later.
Snowing down to village level Thredbo on the cams:
Generally looking towards the border (distant) to left of centre in the dip where the low cloud is. PV and Crackenback more to Centre and Jindy to the right. Light winds currently. Weather app showing 4 degrees here. Not sure that’s correct but it’s cold enough in the paddocks. Looking for some flakes later tonight at home.
Been steadily raining in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne for a little over the past 2 hours.
Looks to be snowing at Hotham.
Nice looking blob on target for a direct hit with the NSW Alps
Marginal temp hasn’t stopped the car park at lake mtn going white, with much of the blob still to hit. Will be touch and go but I’m hoping/expecting it’s ski-able tomorrow.
Funny how it seems lake mtn can snow in the -1 to +1 celcius range, while Buller can rain at -1 quite a bit.
Heading towards 10cm now as system total at Buller, footprints filling in, the gaps in the planks in my previous photos earlier gone:
Currently puking snow.
