Last skied 27 years ago. Have just booked an overnight stay for my son (total beginner) and myself (intermediate I suppose) at Buller at the Arlberg for the 29th & 30th.

Just found out that you can't hire goggles or gloves anymore. You could back in my day. Now the OH&S people are here as well. Oh well.

So it'll be a drive up from Geelong to Mansfield early Thurs morning, on the Mansfield bus to the village, gear hire, lessons and then hopefully a hell of a lot of fun for 2 days.
Then bus back to Mansfield and hopefully share drive with my son all the way back to Geelong.

Might throw some sleeping bags in the car in case we decide to crash (I mean sleep) on the way home and finish getting home on the Saturday.

    Looking forward to it.

Thanks. Good to know I'm not the only one that's left it years then. We'll both have our phones on us and maybe a small Canon digital so will try and get some pics/vid to post up.

No ski days between 1994 and 2007. About 80 odd since then including 3 overseas trips. Be carefull you don't enjoy it too much, that shit can get expensive [IMG] .

I so hope it stays decent for the two days I'm going up.

Where are you in Perth Lady M? We used to live in Pinjarra.

Quick question. Is anyone from here going to be at buller on the 29th and 30th so I could maybe catch up somewhere to put faces to names?

I'm considering seeing if I can move my two days that I am going up. Everything I can find says it will be raining. Not the best way to introduce someone to the snow for the first time.
Haven't done this for so long, just not sure what to do? [IMG]

Rang 'em. Can't move booking. 29th th and 30th it is. I shall pray to the snow god. Anyone know his/her name?

Can't believe I didn't post after I went. Had a lot of fun. My knees gave me a lot of gip as they are buggered, but I'm also carrying too much weight. Have bought all my own gear now as the hire stuff from where we stayed was rubbish. Well the boots anyway. Jarryd managed to work out that it was a lot harder to snowboard than it looked and spent a fair bit of time on his butt or his face depending on what was facing down the hill when he decided to bail.
Got next to no photos as it was pretty much a white out for the entire time.
Waiting to see what happens now to work out time off from the daily job so Jarryd and I can go up again a couple of times this season hopefully.

Did a similar thing. After skiing all through my teens and meeting my wife at Hotham I had a break for 16 years. Finally reasoned that the kids were old enough to appreciate it and went back to Buller for a few days last year. Got to the top of the chair lift and paralleled all the way down burnt hut. Just like riding a bike. Now hooked again with all new gear. The kids as well. These twin tip parabolic skis are amazing....

    Yep, I get that.

Interesting pattern emerging. I also had lots of years off. I think it's got something to do with getting married, mortgage and young kids. All expensive propositions. Skiing is the one that had to give way. Especially from WA.

I moved to WA as well for work so skiing was not really an option. Now that I am back over here, it's on!
I'm looking forward to taking all my new gear out this season. Thinking about a day trip up to Buller on the first weekend after the school holidays. May even consider Baw Baw.

Not a cure as such, but throw lots of money at the addiction, and you will from time to time be able to temporarily sate the monster.

Well, there are no health regs against it. That's what they always quote, but it's not true. I hire gloves but not goggles. The gloves are washed and ozoned after every wear, and hence are sterile. It takes a bit of work, but can be (and in my case, is) done. If you go up the Maroondah Hwy, rather than the Melba Hwy, you'd pass right by my shop on the left hand side at Narbethong. $5 per day, $8.75 for 2 days for gloves.

But then the more you sate that monster, the more it makes you want to keep going back again and again.

[I guess you could say, the addiction kind of....... snowballs! Boom tish]

Well, the sons new board is ordered along with his bindings. We've got everything else sorted, so now it's wait for his board, then up to Buller as much as we can this season. Also a possible day trip with a shop here in Geelong to Falls. Hoping to do a lot more than 2 days this ski season.

I keep reading about this Jane lass. Who is she? I also see multiple references on here to all sorts of weather sites that I have no idea of.

TBH, I just sort of assumed hash tags were available. Either way I was thinking of it as a 'feature request' that would be a #GoodThing.

Anyway, looks like some attempt has been made at hash tags; maybe still a WIP. Hopefully they are getting close.

    http://xenmods.com/hashtags/

Maybe one to keep in mind for next season. :)

Been off for a fair while. After going skiing last year, I haven't had a lot of time to myself.
Won't be going this year at all. The physio and my neurologist said not a good idea after a lateral medullary stroke on the 13th November last year. Has made balancing awfully difficult. :(
