Sounds like the last few years were not good at all for him and he had had enough.

don't know what happened on first run, but Hirscher somehow only got 22nd over 2 secs behind leader. But put in a very good second run and is moving up the placings. Still the top 8 to go though.

Apparently the reason for Marcels poor first run was that one of the ski techs put a protective coating on the wrong side of his goggles, so they fogged up after the first few seconds, so vision impaired. But benefit of 22nd place with top 30 running in reverse order he started 9th and got a better track and was able to have a great run. Most that following struggled in one of the top sections which worsened and lost 1-2 seconds. Only Kristoffersen was able to protect lead - he is dominating slalom this year.

Good atmosphere in the Schladming night slalom - crowd of around 50,000. Relatives of mine have been there in the past and say it is amazing.
    Marcels 2nd run.

Ted Ligety continues the run of season ending ACL injuries with a crash in training in Germany.

More positive news though for Hannes Reichelt who is expecting to return to training for the Garmisch downhill.

Anyone care to name and/or shame the Aussie who pulled a sideways entry into the WC SL in Kitzb??
SSA have sent out a pretty terse email decrying the sneakiness of it and emphasising it was not sanctioned by them??

Heh heh, I don't know the circumstances but it's always funny when officials get their knickers in a bunch over some protocol issue. Let them spin this any way they want, but was getting a start in a WC was bad for the athlete's development path?

there's always a tension between the SSA and athletes - and their parents!
little Jimmy is always the next Hermannator if only he got a break and $50k
so this guy wasn't selected and found a way in as an individual entry?

Looks like Hannes has recovered reasonably well. Recorded the best time* in Thursdays first training run for Saturdays downhill in Garmisch (*although he did miss a gate).

A couple of tough corners - a few now missing - too much speed on the traverse and not able to get around in time.
Kline looks to have it - first Slovenian downhill win for 7 years.

    edit. maybe not..

yep, from Maribor. Looks warm and course seems to get getting tougher.
Vonn skied out so Lara has a chance to regain lead in overall.

Slalom in Maribor in the rain. Looks farcical. First few starters had it ok but no one since. Several saying it shouldn't have started at all.

So for 2012?13 FIS changed the GS ski regulations based on a scientific study to reduce injuries...... guess they were looking in the wrong place.

Irony is not lost on me that Ligety has blown a knee - he was very outspoken about the changes.

He was and yet Ligety managed to jump the pack due to the changes.

I haven't been following closely but I also ponder if the carnage on the Hahnenkamm was due to compromised course preparation due to poor snow before the event?

Was largely the poor visibility at the time prior to the compression on the Hausbergkante, so it was hard to judge. 3 of the crashes were in the almost identical spot.
