Manly never likes S swells, produce 99% closeouts. Loves E to NE swells. Will be interesting to see what it's like next week if this long range E swell comes through.....

CW did an interesting article on how Queensie bommie helps to produce the quality peaks in an E/NE swell - well worth a read: http://www.coastalwatch.com/surfing/12725/guide-manly-the-breaks

Oops that's not the one I was after - this might be it: http://api.coastalwatch.com/photo-g...nly-beach/photo695/manly-beach?t=surfingworld

Well done to the boys on the spot , hope they are cool with the incident.....

I got called into work on the beach yesterday.
The sets where very deceptive in that there would be a long period between , then a 3 wave set would just max out.
Was warning the punters all day to be wary as it would go from ankle deep to waist deep with a lot of power in them.
The Bommies where the go down here.
Both the well known in town and the other not quite so well known (but well filmed).
Didn't get a call on size but was told crew of 10 where all being very cautious.
8 waves in 3 hrs. from one lad who's extremely capable and not easily fazed at all....

GCR was packed all day , 4 or 5 foot 'ish .
I managed a few quick one's off the point in my break , well overhead & good fun.

Last couple of weeks has felt like the banks at Palmy need another "reboot". Was pretty good for a couple of weeks after the heavy rain then since has degraded to mostly offering "straight-handers".

BTW I had a greatly-abbreviated session on Sunday just north of North Palm Beach surf club about 7am. Had just caught my first one of the session and paddling back out one of the regulars (who had caught another one in the same set) and I both noticed that distinctive and concerning fishy small. Paddled back out regardless, then suddenly seabirds diving out of the sky all around us, then - as the final straw - fish upwards of 50cm long were jumping out of the water all around us. She and I looked at each other and decided neither of us liked the look of it, so the 4 of us on the bank all proned-out to the beach together on the very next wave. Didn't actually see a fin, so didn't report it on the Dorsal app, but definitely a sharky moment and none of us bothered waiting around to paddle back out later. Was Valentine's Day after all, so reappearing back home earlier than expected wasn't entirely bad.

A good day was had along the entire stretch from the Alley up to Greenhills. An early start was the go with the high tide, with the banks in good form and voodoo and the outer reefs picking up some solid swell. The NEster getting into around 11AM.And surprisingly crowds were down.

What's the back story on the vegetation clearing?
General consensus down here on the mornington peninsula in Vic is that over stabilising of the dunes has buggered up sand movement and consequently the banks.
It's a dynamic environment down here, constant swell. Could count the flat days on one hand. Banks though...you can count those on one finger at times. Compared to the 90s where it was at least one good bank per beach at times. Maybe a collective selective memory.
SAfrican maram grass being the saviour or culprit depending on your views

Interesting. Yep, I remember epic mega banks in the 90's down the peninsula. Especially around the St Andrews area and Portsea. Haven't seen banks like that in ages.

Woonona is scarped quite profoundly south of the cleared area.
The banks down there are shite.

Fairly similar 'sharky' experience out at the Pole a few weeks back minus the birds. Lots of fish frequently jumping around. Fortunately there were lots of people in the water at the time so the chances were reduced. Found out after I got out that there were multiple confirmed sightings right near where I was. Must check out that dorsal app.

Agreed. Good mate of mine (only 34) just had multiple tumors removed from on or near his brain. Only found out after all of sudden he completely lost hearing in his right ear. Routine scan picked them up. Now recovering in ICU but will be a long road back to normal

Agreed - It has been so bad for so long. Can't remember the last time there were decent banks, apart from the fairly well established right at the northern end.

Went for a late session last night - the occasional 2 footer but overall pretty ordinary with a strong NE sideshore blowing.

The water is ridiculous right now - it's seriously a bath! I was out in boardies only for an hour and did not get cold at all. I'm seeing 25 degrees and it definitely feels every bit of that.

Another big fella cleared the water down here yesterday arv..
Seeing lots of bait fish and bird activity most days also.
Looking forward to the Winston swell - they're calling 4 or 5 foot later in the week.

Yes mate , they are always there and in close.
There is a colony of Whalers so not unusual to see them there at all , was only that there was so many together on the day.
Generally they only see one cruising past.
Bit of xmas crowds & hype added to the story also.

ENE 2.0m says Willy Weather and coming from a looong way out could be a challenge for water safety crew.
Won't really know till you see it on the day / wind / tide as you know.

I generally still consider giving them a swim even if it's only porpoise-ing out to waist deep and back.
Duck dive or popping on the boards , get smashed around a little in the white water.
It's all necessary skill development they need which they won't get in the pool.
Under supervision it may be a great opportunity to gain the experience , step by step.

Fortunately the weather forecast may put off a lot of punters from heading to the beach this weekend, but still very dangerous for nippers and clubbies and the inexperienced etc.

I've had a string of beautiful mornings the last few days. Some good surf at Gerringong over the weekend. Lots of fish jumping and action in the water, was a little nervous. Surfed North Beach and City Beach last two mornings in Wollongong. Tiny waves but amazingly warm water.

Looks like a few fun little peelers there PPP.

Is it City Beach that gets really hollow and if you look from the southern end you see the lighthouse? Is it the one that Steen always takes photos of? Aka 16 Images?

Was the only one out at Wamberal mid morning.
High tide, mostly solid chest high into a shutdown, with strong sweep dragging down the beach. Nice in the water.

Surfed a fun right hand reef break saturday over at the Island. It was offshore and maybe 3' early with the morning high tide. The afternoon saw it become chopped up. The crowds on phillip island can only be described as a zoo. People and boards flying everywhere.

I also surfed the back beaches yesterday which was a good fun 3-4' on the incoming tide with a punchy rip bowl making it very fun .

Looks like more swell on the way too.

Thommo's & Headies could be on this weekend, depending on what the wind does.....

I've got next week off so I'll be surfing lots and I'll try to snap a few pics

Yep, looks like he is normally hanging around he golf course as @Donza said. There is another local photographer, Warren Keelan who has some good stuff. He gets some super clear barrel shots at north beach.

A buddy of mine who is an amazing artist is holding an exhibition on Friday 26 feb for Take 3 for the Sea, a charity that aims to reduce litter. They have been painting a bunch of pros' boards, a Big O, Tyler, J dub etc. if anyone is in Manly check it out.
