    I'll be honest.

I don't get trade shows in Australia or the states (they love a trade show in the states).
The interwebs have rendered them a bit meh.

I get them in China ...

Never been to Australia's trade show, but our cycle of new products are ahead of the USA. That's why its hard to get any info now. Stuff being talked about now in Aus is many months prior to the Colorado trade show.

As most brands/manufacturers are from Nth Hemi, I would imagine "most" will have info now regarding what's going to be available for 2020 (nth hemi season), which we and NZ get first in the 2019 season.

Australia sure as hell didn't get SI before NA.

Manufacturing cycle provides us with the latest ski products from all major manufacturers prior to the USA season. Fact. Can't comment on snowboards.
P.S. I posted my original question in the thread "Latest ski & tourism news" but a mod must have made this new thread. My question was in relation to "latest ski news".

    Your'e confusing manufacturing with sampling.
Remember trade shows aren't showing products under manufacturing (mostly ). They're showing samples.
Australia gets stock earlier in the season cycle than the states by virtue of the delivery windows and its location to China.
It also gets absolutely stiffed at times when shops in NA book the majority of the stock before its even had a chance to reach our shores.

Hardgoods we are the year ahead of NH, most soft goods and accessories we are behind. Of course it depends on the brand. Then there are the Aussie companies whose cycles coincide with the Oz winter.

Mind you the whole concept of "seasons" its evaporating IMO
The whole industry is homogeneous with the rise of China.

I think you'd see a few more new season skis in January at SIA than you would in CBR.
    (americans love a trade show)
    Its a joke here

I doubt anyone will see the new ski's in Canberra, but the distributors will have the information from the manufacturers many months prior to USA and we will be the first to sell them.
P.S. Been working trade shows in Europe, UK, Japan and USA for more than 20 years in another industry, so know a bit about them. Cheers

    Sweet..
    Good on yah
    Medals in the mail.
I'll bank my experience is a wee bit larger

I'll tell you a few "facts" about being a distributor of snow products in this country.
You are a pimple on the face of snow sports retail worldwide.
    We are a tiny market.
You have to deal with ridic lead times due to NA.

There is alot of piss and wind re Canberra (i know major accounts that don't go...why would they? They've already seen the range in comfort)

More fool them. I often have a really good find there. Yeah, sure, I've already seen the major suppliers that interest me (I had to have some orders in by 30th Sept), but often there's new players or new products that are worth getting excited about.

You also get to meet and discuss stuff with other people who you're not in direct competition with. Can be informative and productive. Good for contacts in the industry.

I’ve wondered how big our market is in reality? Outside of rental fleets. How many of a particular ski would a manufacturer expect to shift in Aus in a typical year? Say something mainstream like Volkl Kendo? 100’s? 500?

The Nordica boot factory makes the Australian order in about 6 hours.

My original question is not about size of market, our small footprint etc etc. For reasons of ordering, retailers such as Carveman will be talking to distributors about next seasons offerings to put together their plans. This information they obtain will come before NA's retailers get their chance in Colorado in the New Year (or at least be made public). I'm out.

Burton sells more beanies in $$$ in the states than their entire Australian business

Yep. This is true. I've already ordered some skis off a brochure for next winter. These skis won't be available in NH until 2019-2020 winter.

Yeah for sure. I think Asia would blow your mind in that regard
I was coming (arrogantly) from being in the position of a major.
We'd go to trade shows and develop SMU with the brands.

Then as a wholesaler we'd work with certain shops to build SMU so we could reach MOQ on certain lines.

The quirky ideas you'd see at Trade shows ... sort of got lost

Indeed (maybe not before me, but about the same time). But they won't be ready for distribution from the manufacturer until March/April.

This question about the Australian trade show was posted in theLatest News in the Japan forum which is appropriately about Japan.

Hence relocation of this query to a new thread all it’s own in Equipment. The responses so far are generally on topic, so I am thinking you are getting a more sensible response to your OP & leaving Japan on topic.:)

    Mods are here to help.

Was there a trade show on?

Unfortunately, the SIA practices make it prohibitive for small players to afford to be part of the industry. This is on the back of the rhetoric pedalled out when the protective old guard ran the mates only gig.

Would love to be involved. Can't afford it. Perhaps it's time to look a more inclusive membership packages.
