I dislike the tube for a few reason. I like to decide on clothing layers and goggle lens in the PV carpark, have often made a completely different choice to the one I made at home. I like to be able to leave when the voice in my head says "that'll do". Invariably I've just missed the last train and have a 20-30 minute wait for the next. Though there are donuts. I will avoid BC and Guthega if I can't ski there and back due to wind hold.

I do use the tube if I'm going later in the day (ie not in the carpark by 7:30) or if the roads are going to be particularly bad. Or early season when the links aren't open and I want to ski BC. It has been invaluable with kids that ski independently, or do school programs. Much easier to drop them at tube that have to drive all the way up. When my eldest was doing school skiing, I'd often drive her to tube, then drive to Cooma for work, and reverse in the afternoon. Huge days, made a little less by the tube.

The first Freedom pass was the first skitube add-on I ever bought. It was very cheap at the time (maybe $25?) and a no brainer to buy. The price has gradually crept up, I'm not sure why as given the traffic congestion these days, I would have though Perisher would want more parked at Bullocks. Makes me think that it's just money grabbing.

Vail bought three small ski resorts in the midwest of the U.S. because they serve major metropolitan target markets (Detroit, Chicago, Minneapolis/St. Paul). At least one of those still has a local season pass for families who aren't going to fly to the Rockies annually. So why not use the same strategy for Perisher? Happy locals are more likely to consider saving up for a big trip at least once.

When Vail bought Stowe in Vermont, an adult season pass was about $2000. Locals were excited at the idea of getting a full Epic pass for just under $1000 and being able to takes a trip to the Rockies or Tahoe. I heard that first hand from the owner of a small motel because he was going to be able to take his family to a destination resort during late season after skiing was done in Vermont.

I recall that there was a development master plan for Perisher, well before Vail bought it from Perisher Blue PL. The idea floated was to build a village on the carpark and while keeping some parking the space would be less with more emphasis on Skitube for access. If Vail do undertake any of that work then raising the price of the Skitube would be part of the deal.

In 2012 the Eiger Chalet staff I brought back from the Hilltop Hoods gig at The Station were calling the season pass "the seven-sixty pass". $699 for the lift pass, $60 for skitube add-on.

Skitube should be included in your pass. At resorts overseas the gondola is usually the first lift you take up to access the rest of the resort. In Breckenridge the gondola is free, no lift pass required. Free. Skitube is access to the resort, should be no extra cost. Though of course there’s the National Park entry factor.

I don't understand how the pricing works.. .

Last time I caught the tube down, I could have ridden for free. We exited to the right into the carpark

Sometimes they open the chains to the sides of the gates. Sometimes they don't.

Railways (the ski tube) have a whole heap of extra regulations beyond the ones for chairlifts. A train is not a gondola.

Nah didn't go anywhere near the gates .. There is a fence to the right that has a gate going out into the carpark.
Only the right hand side doors opened ..and I walked out straight into the carpark (i was middle of train)

at the time there was comment that Jamie et al were fattening up the product to make it more attractive to buyers
whether that goes ahead is anyone's guess
it would make more sense to jack up the price of parking and promote the use of skitube
currently the park pass gets you in and you can park anywhere

Thats because the parking is leased/managed by the park. Perisher have no control over it!

it's in the resort and the park's interest to limit the entry of cars
price is one way of influencing the choice

it's a big issue everywhere there are national parks
in A Walk in the Woods - his book about the Appalachian Trail - Bill Bryson refers to the US national parks' biggest budget item, maintenance of roads

    Never going to happen!

Can't charge one fee for Perisher access road, then one for Thredbo.

    Privatise both as toll

Not quite like that, unfortunately. I was staying at the Eiger and gave them a lift to the Skitube. Besides, they were a couple.

How easy it is to misinterpret shit on the internet :nono:

Vail (the real estate company) perhaps could cap the maximum number of passes sold. The place is over full. A quality day / s at Perisher are when you fluke a mid week and nobody is there - a situation less and less likely these days. Always looking for other slider traffic in such numbers is not a good ski.

I’m happy to car camp if it’s just me. I’ve often thought how easy it would be to find a quiet spot in the ski tube car park and get my head down for the night. Breakfast at Brunelli’s and front of the line for the first runs :)

Did I share we pulled the trigger on the deposit for next year?

YK almost did enough days this year to justify a pass and next year we will at least do a few nearing the wedding, so easy to squash a couple more in.

Have hit dad up for babysitting duties since mums the main breadwinner. Man that will be a laugh!

Might have to get the little tike a bee suit for the market store! LOL

Actually as of Sunday 23rd they were still advertising it at $799 on a billboard inside the Perisher Centre near Jax. If you go to Perisher and see that price advertised by law they must honour it (unless they withdraw the epic pass from sale until removing all advertising at that price). The display does not have an expiry date on it. So if anyone is going to Perisher between now and the end of the season and hasn't bought their pass yet I would suggest checking if the $799 price is still advertised, then head downstairs and ask to buy a pass for $799 as advertised.

Didn't go up much. Why can't they just have a limited amount available, like the old freedom pass. Now the crowds just keep getting bigger.
