I know I've mentioned this in another thread, but it's becoming like the F1 - traditional destinations can't (or are unwilling to) compete and it's rich, emerging 'look at moi' countries that are the only ones left.

How TF can Korea hold the full program of Alpine Skiing events - they've hosted a token handful of SL and GS events over the years but never a DH or SG?!?!?!?

I think it was Rudy Giuliano, then mayor of New York, who said about Atlanta's bid "The Olympics are for cities on the make".

Turin and Vancouver certainly weren't cities on the make

Yeah it has taken a while for the Winter Olympics to catch up, but they jumped the shark with Sochi and the future looks bleak.

I was spewing when Annecy didn't get up.

Things have changed since he was mayor though. The shortlisted cities for 2012 were all pretty much tier one cities; London, Paris, NYC, Madrid and Moscow.

Would Australia's conditions be reliable enough to host a Winter Olympics seeing that some snow seasons have been absolute shockers. I guess Canberra could be the host city and have all the indoor stuff there. It would probably be a case of good luck putting in the infrastructure at Perisher etc for such a large scale event. The greenies would have a field day.

Apart from the slight (enormous) vertical problem we've got, it would be very easy!

It would be great if it did happen. I actually enjoy watching the winter games better than the summer ones. That strange white stuff makes it look so good.

The Olympics (summer and winter) are out of hand. They should go back to basics.

Winter Olympics will never be held in the southern hemisphere. Out of season for the vast majority of athletes.

It ain't about the athletes teckel, the problem is it's out of season for the advertisers and the TV networks. Poor old winter athletes don't get asked - just like the football players never got asked if they wanted to play in 50 degrees in Qatar

With snow making the only real complication to holding it in Australia is the downhill. That is of course if money doesn't matter.

How good would a main range xc track be!

XC would be held at Falls - it's the only place in the country with the experience of running big international XC events.

No Teckel, they will run it in Canberra on a purpose built refrigerated cross country course around the lake. Money no object.

Easy solved, give the Football World Cup to Australia and hold both down here;) I mean how hard could that be?

Isn't that what's going to happen anyway if they move the football matches in Qatar away from the hottest months?

Christchurch looked fairly seriously at a winter olympics bid a few years back. Believe it ended up in the too hard basket.

Not necessarily. Where are the Gold Coast holding all their events?

Based on your statement I'd expect everything to be held in Melbourne as it's all been done before in 2006 and they have the experience.

Event staff/experience goes to where it's needed. The physical venue itself is almost irrelevant.

Well FIFA are now looking at moving the World Cup to the same time as the Winter Olympics (as a result of their own stuff up of awarding the World Cup to Qatar to begin with)http://m.bbc.com/sport/football/29517324

Can we tie up a Jindy F1 deal with the Smigs bid? Would be cool to see them racing around the lake.

Or 38 degree, 90% humidity, at midday in the Amazon, so that Europeans could get the games in prime time.

European audiences had it even better than the hosts in South America!

So today's the day. Almaty or Beijing?
i very much doubt I'll be going to watch anyway, but I'd rather visit Almaty than Beijing. At least there are proper mountains close by and not a 140km train ride away.
I do love Almaty's slogan - "Keeping it real"!!!

Borat jokes aside, Almaty is rich with Russian culture. The country died long ago. There aren't even any nomads on the steppe anymore

Mt Allan was arguably worse in 88

    So was the half pipe.
Point being most people probably associate Vancouver with "winter" a bit more than beijing.
I can see the amazing panoramic filler shots of the crippling air pollution now. Not to mention the mountains with entirely man made snow.. Sounds like a winter wonderland alright..

The Olympics have to evolve to remain relevant IMO. The punters want to see Tony Hawk pulling huge 720 airs, not someone walking sideways on a horse. The Winter games have done this somewhat, the summer games not so much.

You don't think a group of super privileged in-breds riding quarter of a million dollar horses around an arena being judged by their society friends isnt relevant?
