That's one of the things that is fudamentally not the point of the olympics. Especially in the age of professionalism. Ultimately, it's about balance. And as an aside, the x-games franchise is not longer what it once was.

The Olympics should be held in the best suited locations not the locations with the deepest pockets.

The best suited locations don't actually want to hold the Olympics.

The Olympics needs to draw away from the X games model, not towards it. As Red mentioned, the X games franchise is struggling, TV coverage revenues aren't what they used to be etc. I've always said X games is all about quick cheap thrills and caters to the trending now crowd. Those folks have trended onward to other cheap thrills like the latest viral youtub vid, cat videos and celebrity nip slip pics. I.e., the X Games targeted people with short attention spans and that will be its eventual downfall.

They should just make a winter olympics venue in somewhere like switzerland and always have it there. they should make the summer olympics in greece. I dont see the point in a new city/country(in greece's case) going bankrupt every 4 years just so the IOC can sleeze their way around the world.

Not sure the Olympics had all that much to do with Greece's tale of woe.

I think the idea of having a set location is a good one though. Especially for the winter Olympics.

Permanent venues sounds good at first, but consider the demonstrable advantage in medal haul to host countries in the past quarter century and you have a powerful structural reason that would cause most IOC member countries to oppose that concept. What needs to happen is downsizing the winter and summer games. Our incessant clamour for ever higher achievement needs to be kept on the sporting field rather than in the hoopla that surrounds the games. Do we really need torch relays that go for over 15,000 km (Vancouver), or a city wide fireworks show that cost tens of millions (Beijing)? Hundreds of millions could have been pared from the budget of any recent Games just by returning the non sporting elements back to the simplicity we saw through to the 1960s.

Of course, further savings could come from reducing the number of sports represented in the games, but the controversy there would be enormous. The IOC could also openly announce they would favour bids that promoted renovated/upgraded venues rather than brand new ones. It's becoming obvious with the winter games that the venues with the best physical parameters have been priced out of the market and only big cities in developed countries can hope to be successful.

Actually it would be good to work net crew for the DH and SG events there, certain in the knowledge that pesky new snow during race week would be very unlikely. Bludgiest DH course gig ever!
