Depending on your perspective it's either:
    a. beautifully warm and sunny today (Western Sydney) or
    b. sickeningly warm and wet today (Alps)

I'm going with a. just to try and be positive…..

Wow that warm moist tropical Jestream really dominated this system. I really thought the cold pool would win. Still a bit of hope on the Satellite near Adelaide. The worst of it is almost past.

We are up to 64 mm of rain at Perisher on a base that hasn't had a decent freeze since the 25 mm that fell earlier this week. With up to 80 mm predicted for today, possibly considerably more, the combination of heavy rain & significant snow melt will see creeks turn into raging torrents. Paddocks are awash @ Eucumbene & the creeks & waterfalls are a sight to see. Tomorrow we change from a land in flood to a winter wonderland.

Strong band working it way across port Phillip heads with a westerly change. Drops 5c by the look of it.

I observe an evil wind has just blown into Western Sydney. Not quite Sydney Olympics rowing evil but pretty ugly.

It's just a typical winters day. Whether you like it or not, systems invariably have a component of prefrontal & wind; we've just been mostly lucky with previous systems this winter. It's only really an issue for those that want to ski/slide today.

You can't seriously pretend this is typical. It's just not

It'll start to come good later but it's so much warmer than usual. We've had record high minimums this week and further north there are record high maximums under threat (eg Sydney). It is not normal even in the context of the usually wide variety of Australian winter weather

The good news: it's dropped from 18 to 17 in Melbourne.

The bad news: I'm still in a t-shirt and can't bring myself to light the fire.

That squall line just went through Geelong. Looking at the drop in temperatures at Aireys Inlet, the temperature in Geelong won't be getting back any near to the 17 degrees before that band went through.

Today may be typical but the leadin hasn't been. Several records have been broken this week to prove it. It's as if that cold blast last week has caused a massive correction in what has followed.
Won't stop me packing the car this afternoon though.

It's not hyperbole. I'm at Thredbo and not stressing. Tomorrow will hopefully be a good day. But today, these temps and this rain, is atypical. Canberra and surrounds setting records this week is also obviously atypical

Trying to change to something a bit more solid at Hotham. Seeing the odd flurry in the big wind gusts and the odd bit of ice in raindrops hitting the window. But who am I kidding, it's still pissing down!

Warm SST's in the North Indian Ocean at play I guess. Juicing up the prefrontal band plenty. To go with the residual heat left in the interior from the low pressure trough during the week. Cool change is coming though and the damage will be repaired.

GFS calibrated to Radar is 2 hrs behind reality.

Thats two hours less rain and more snow. Which is really quite a big difference at current rainfall intensity.

    Estimated snow time 7 - 8 pm.
