Looks like another front will come through Thredbo and Perisher in next hour or so.
I was hit by 'sago' and small hail at Tobias Gap descending the Bungalow spur from Federation hut on Mt. F.Top on Tuesday this week. It does feel like the snow season has finally arrived. It was properly cold here in Melb. today .
Skiing this arvo in the throws of epic snowfall was just about as good as it gets. Observed a stray beer in the car as we drove down through the stormy flakefest and realised todays observations were destined for an often to be reviewed memory bank.
Today brought the goods
And it's still going now. Looking forward to hearing how much they got. (Their rain gauge must have frozen)
Some great shots here
On Buller the north side of the hill has been filled in quite nicely between Fox chair and Bonza. The lifts closed(frustratingly) as it had accumulated to its best for the day.
Don't tell anyone about this for tomorrow morning
Interesting weather today.. went to Hotham.
Driving through Harrietville this morning was -1 and snowing (albeit light but was snow)
3/4 of the drive up was on a white road.
Tried to snow all day, kinda did, then after lunch a couple of cm fell and wind picked up.. re-setting a couple of stashes.
I observed good things in the mountains and down in Jindy yesterday afternoon/evening..
How long did it snow for down in Jindy yesterday?
Probably 30-45 minutes.
I observe that I'm very pleased to be observing Mt Buller firsthand and real time today. It's a cracker of a day. Clear skies and not a breathe of wind above and a terrific base beneath the skis
Is that Nuggets in the background?
Dunno where this is in Victoria but my better half's mom just posted it Facebook and it sure looks pretty. They live in Myrtelford fyi.
Bogong to the left, Hotham to the right
Looking across a hops farm
Nice. But dem pine forests would worry me in summer/bush fire season.
They've been living out there for about 20 years and never had an issue.
Snowed down at their place once as well. Never again mind you.
bluebird day today at Hotham.
sub zero temps and snowguns going.
cover looks quite good.
It is actually Feathertop on right and Fainter on the left.
9:42am and -1.2C in Canberra. Colder than Perisher.
I know right, nuts. Its happened a lot this year, colder in the day here @ 570m than at 1720m.
Still below zero at 10am. Canberra is having its coldest winter in 33 years. Average minimum is -2.1C so far.
Mornings are cold, but daytime temps are well over. I'd expect a lot more 9-11 days but its seems to get up to 13-14 most days.
I just reffed 1/2 a soccer game on the oval in Jindy. The first ref had to swap off because their feet were frozen.
To the ground?!!?
Lets say yes....
errr It has been quite cold compared to last year in Jul. Only one day at 14 or above thus far for Canberra Airport. Last July there was eight days at or above 14 degrees with a couple of 16, 17 degree days and one 18 degree day.
Got down to a brutal 4.7 degs on the Sth Coast this morning.
Looking at the data for June in CBR - Daytime averages were 1.3c above average (at 13.6 VS average of 12.3) and nights were 2.4c below average (at -1.4 VS average of 1c). July is tracking similar, current Daytime averages are 1.1c above average (currently 12.5 VS 11.4) and nights are quite a stark 3.6c below average (currently -3.7 VS -0.1)
Of course this is not a comparison to last year, just the norm.
Data taken from the BOM and Weatherzone: http://www.bom.gov.au/climate/current/month/act/summary.shtml
Melbourne has been similar, warmer days with colder nights compared to the average.
Way off-topic CC apologies.
Melbourne is a gloomy day today cloud has come in at around 11 and looks to be staying, so much for getting out with the camera today.
Very blowy in Melbourne.
Beach rd was a bear on the return leg.
Blowing hard up at perisher. Crowds parked down the road to sponars and then ques for a long way down the road. Cops and mountain ops now turning everyone back around at the gates. Beautiful bluebird morning on the mountain.
You cannot see Mt. Bogong from the Ovens Valley. You must go over Tawonga gap to see the Big Fella.
Mt. Feathertop and Mt. Buffalo are visible from The Ovens Valley, esp. if you walk up Reform hill that overlooks Myrtleford. In white season the snow on Mt. Hotham can also be seen from that vantage point.
Those camped up on Eskdale Spur are ganna know about it!
You are soft. Not long ago we had minus 3 C. one morning here in the NE of Melb.
Saturday 5am was regularly -4 and -5 when I'd arrive for my winter shifts in Hamilton, (after having first de-iced the car).
I observe fun was had today at paralyzer.
Wind was up this morning but it filled all tracks nicely.
Wife having a few turns
Lunch, spaghetti and a rum
Hard earned beer at guthega inn
Snow in resort is in good shape too.
Great pics, thanks for posting. I'm away from home and working in Sydney... envy, envy, envy
Severe weather warning was renewed by BOM at approx 5pm.and again at 9pm.
There's going to be some wind blown stashes in a day or so.... getting hammered here all night at Moonbah with powerful winds. First time this winter that sustained (strong) winds have hit our place. Perisher and Thredbo likely to have a bit on wind hold if this keeps up post dawn....
We're supposed to be on first tracks but decided it's all prob on wind hold. So didn't go. Does anyone know how to check if it's on a Perisher/ blue cow?
If it is called off they usually send a text message to those who have registered for the day. Usually this comes around 6am, but sometimes I have got it at 7am when I am in the carpark putting my boots on
blowing hard up at smigs
Now THAT is awesome. Nice work!
Agreed, we are at smigs and it's blowing a gale
Mmmm.... Wind speed Thredbo top station 76kms gusting at 96kms atm.
There is a couple of spots where you can see Bogong from Ovens Valley incl Bright.
The wind has died down a lot in jindy but am expecting wind hold
Again BOM renewed this warning at 4am..today
Blew hard most of the night in the Upper Yarra, has eased off this morning
