ok in absence of an obs thread id just say some of the winds currently being experienced are the strongest all year so far.
Rxxn or snow by the time it gets to the Alps? It's been crickets on this thread - hope weather gurus aren't expecting something nasty....!
It's already at the Alps. The forecast is for rain, followed by sleet, followed by a bit of snow overnight.
Some fairly violent winds ripping up the Moonbah Valley..... EDIT: As strong as we’ve encountered this winter. Seemingly at odds with the BOM readings up at PV.
BOM AWS Perisher is showing gusts of up to 83kmh and Thredbo top station 109kmh in the last few hours. Lake level in Jindy the wind is very strong, but gusting. Really strong bursts followed by quieter spells.
Also not a guru, but it's just a kinda boring one. Not much of anything good or bad. Observations - temps at resort level were looking good but have just ticked up in the last hour.
Hallmark of airmass ahead of frontal boundary. All down hill from here. Temps no concern with this one.
See I don’t know much at all about this weather watching business but to my very untrained eye that looks more promising than I’ve been led to believe by various snow reports. This is good no?
First of all about 90 mins ago we had 4 blackouts within 5 minutes, now power still off, then seemed like some form of vortex came past about an hour ago with very strong winds, sprays of hail and sideways rain, (house still standing!) Its still super gusty but abating now, looks like we’re in the eye of the low centered directly over Tassie East Coast Hinterland on the satpic. Should be something uphill in the morning.
UOTE="Nightskywatcher, post: 4416985, member: 65969"]Snow stake cover in whipped cream[/QUOTE] Yes South perisher looked damp, but.. the pics over the road seem better, 5 they say, maybe a bit more.. Just got to the Alps.. clipped
Thredbo TS maxing wind gust to 127 km/h. A handful of cents on the ground at NSW. Resorts. Thredbo currently down to 5.8°C Rn.
Wind is howling still. Plenty on hold. PV resort packed with fun seekers... Decamping out here.... Should be fun finding drifts amongst the sastrugi.....all the new snow is grauple..... looks like off piste is ranging from ice through to decent drift lines....
Heavy snow and good settling in Bombala (700m) overnight. Very surprising, but looking at the temps it was more than possible. -2C at 850hpa and -1C at 925hpa indicates a very low lapse rate. Temp dropped by nearly 9C in 20mins as that southerly band came through. Cooma was around zero under rain, so I expect Jindy would have seen some wet flakes overnight also. Not sure what the snow level was that BOM forecasted, but I'm sure it wouldn't have been anywhere near 700m
Perisher up to +7.4ºC this morning, whilst Thredbo TS still hasn't hit positive territory since last week... With Perisher tops station showing +5.5ºC RN, and Thredbo TS showing +0.5º could we be looking bad data?
I suspect something is up. Definitely felt warmer than +0.5C at the top of mount perisher today, which should be similar.
Although, maybe it is correct. Charlotte Pass website showing this for today. Their top station maximum of 0C and their village 8C maximum. But I suspect their top station may be faulty too? Min and max at same time
There's absolutely nothing wrong with the Thredbo AWS data. The disparity in RH% is very apparent between the two stations—i.e. Thredbo AWS reads consistently in the upper 90s (and 98+ which indicates upslope fog), whereas Perisher barely scrapes the 50s and even dips below 20 at times. In fact, I find this to be a common occurence.
Breaking up as it comes through Melb, though. Rain to the South and North. Those of us on tank water need something.
Nothing of significance leeward of the Alpine thus far...... A bit of high level cloud that’s been sitting aloft this afternoon passed by about 30 mins back.
Gusting quite strongly here at Island Bend, though not quite as aggresively as last Thursday evening. The worrying part is the temperature, still 8.0 atm after reaching 15.4 degrees during the day.
Could have blown a brown dog off the chain in Thredbo last night, don’t think there was any white stuff though.
.. . . . . and all night! Some rain observed here at Island Bend and a few bits of hail for a while, but not enough to fill a puddle.
