ECMWF had this system delivering at 2cm/h+ this morning... Given what @CarveMan said about the fatness and density of flakes, I for one am quite impressed with its accuracy... Even though it said so 48hr out :D

    The current radar is nuts....

From the back country....will also apply to off piste in-bounds in some situations. IMO
"The ski cut, only maybe five metres wide, was like slicing a bean bag, graupel poured out from the cut for almost 20 seconds before the 30cm thick slab above it collapsed, then triggered the slope below to erupt in boiling bean bag filling and crumpling wind slabs racing down the hill like icebergs on a river."

    Came thru in an email.
Doesnt specify location......This is the primary hazard that we are reporting. Storm Slab and Dry Slides will occur out of the tail end as the wind drops and the precipitation continues.

    Avalanche Warning: High Danger
Current for NSW Main Range and Vic Alps

Your the first to know: High Danger warning issue for Wednesday 0800hrs
Morning! And first and foremost we thank all of you, our membership base for helping to support this project, the advisory team and our field observations network. Importantly the current conditions on the range are about as bad as we have seen in the four year span of running the program. Equal to the various 'Blizzards of OZ' in 17 and the various other events of triggered slides swept riders and buried them, and as of the time of writing there have been no incidents. We aren't out of the woods yet, and that's the real cut and thrust of this message. This event will linger for the next 48hrs+ so hold the charge, and urge the rest of your immediate pow chasing mates to heed the warning until the snow has settled.

Cams not updating for Thredbo for me, anyone else?

Looks brutal on the Perisher cams IMO - nukage continues - what a week to be there!

Live Wollongong weather update: Pretty fresh, the wind appears to have abated significantly, however, I feel it's the calm before the storm and it's about to ramp up significantly soon.....

I observe it’s not surprising. No EFTPoS available in the mountain at all due to Telstra working on the tower. I guess this is possibly reducing their upload...? A lot of pissed people (probably those who missed opening chairs).

Windy and blowing snow on Thredbo, not a lot settling. Snow qual is a lot more wet than yesterday.
Need some of that Vicco puke before temps head north any more.

That the most insane observation of a graupel layer I've ever heard, and probably up there for avalanche observations I've read in general. I hope they publicly post some pics at some point.

Certainly the case in NSW after what I witnessed... maybe 4-5 hours of heavy graupel on Monday.

It started with the ice event the week before IMO.
that solid layer was always going to be an issue for rest of the winter.
top it with the styrofoam / graupel is textbook disaster waiting to let go.

I don't think that's textbook, that's some weird $%@, Tremper or the Avalanche Review don't have that much to say about graupel!

I do remember the warning that graupel will roll downhill and can collect in hollows or concave spots, creating unusual trigger zones at the base of slopes (instead of the places you'd expect i.e. just below the ridglines at the point of heaviest windloading)

FWIW. Avalange.org encyclopedia entry on graupel (aka "sago" in australia)

"Graupel is that Styrofoam ball type of snow that stings your face when it falls from the sky. It forms from strong convective activity within a storm (upward vertical motion) caused by the passage of a cold front or springtime convective showers. The falling graupel is occasionally accompanied lightning as well.

Graupel looks like a pile of ball bearings. Graupel is a common short-lived weak layer in maritime climates but more rare in continental climates. It’s extra tricky because it tends to roll off cliffs and steeper terrain and collect on the gentler terrain at the bottom of cliffs. Climbers and extreme riders sometimes trigger graupel avalanches after they have descended steep terrain (45-60 degrees) and have finally arrived on the gentler slopes below (35-45 degrees)–just when they are starting to relax. Graupel weak layers commonly stabilize in about a day or two after a storm, depending on temperature."

Yep, the funny bugger can swing a shovel.

Blowing a gale above 1700m RN. No accumulation since I got here IMO, just a lot of wind loading.

From yesterday we knew last night would favour Buller, etc, but it seems like the BOM may have still overcooked it for NSW?

Yeah, TBH I didn’t see much gain for NSW for today, so I am surprised BoM went that hard.
Admittigly, I niaively haven’t been looking at Vic forecast at all but looks like it’s doing x10 better than NSW today.

Looking at the himiwari sat loop you can see the cloud and moisture streaming in from the NW, it's just ~500km too far west for NSW to get the brunt.

As this main frontal band clears the next significant band is over the Grampians and then crossing the SW Vic coastline.

Been an interesting week to be up here, it’s similar to last year , I see some more snow in the tail of this before the weekend, Next week would be a better pick , will try that next year.

Perisher is not getting much snow, it’s wind blown. All chairs except Ridge are on hold , wind is strong , Smiggins full of people seeking shelter..
