Yes, snow quantity is lower than the other resorts.
But when Buller is on, it's on.
never seen such huge drifts and huge cornices in bounds here. Good 3mt cornice near Scotts caught someone off guard. Crew digging out ruined.. all time
We need pics man!
Another light shower just sweeping across Melbourne's CBD right now.
Track out thredez. Check. Grab Splitty and head for fresher pastures. Check mate. Could we really get 5 powdays in a row....
Amazing morning here at perisher
Visibility not great at top but sun trying to break thru lit things up just enough
The best I've ever had in oz in 40 years
Around Sun Valley either side of the T bar was incredible light and dry
The triple on mt p opened late but when it did open my better half and I ripped into it
Inter as well
Towers had virtually no one on it
Great soft stuff all around
Is that where the suitcase full of loot was buried in Fargo?
Yes it's good up at falls today visibility is a tad challenging at times out in the maze etc but sticking to the trees is obviously the go it's been snowing all morning, though very wet snow for the most part. Wind is behaving itself.
I'm at Thredbo again today, following visit on Tues. Lots more snow since then, enough to rope off areas under The Cruiser.
Snow a bit sticky under about 1500m, but otherwise is dry and deep!
Snow constant to village, but not sticking... And just picking up intensity now.
So so so good here!!
Been dry and partly cloudy this morning in Table Top but moisture is building and some heavy showers are now passing through. Though probably a bit patchy by the look of it. Still cold and windy at times too. All the little wrens outside my window are puffed up like pompoms on sticks
I wish you luck on that choice
I live in Merrijig and don't even get a season pass for Buller...must admit this year I'm kicking myself! The $800 2018 season pass is bloody tempting now to see out 2017.
The last front coming through Tas hard
Yep has gotten wet and heavier, esp international. Scott's still best skiing imo but about to call it a day...
Snowfall increasing ATM ..
fark me... I can't recall seeing that Cam so filled in.
Showers are streaming through the bay in Melbourne for what it's worth
Bloody wet out my window yet again here in Melbourne.
Yep quite a wet day at falls today but snow is really handling it well and it didn't cause any issues at all, the maze was best spot to be out of any wind and the trees aid with referencing untracked powder all day out there as long as you were somewhat familiar with the area as vis was quite low. Sunday will be great BC.
The bottom pole on the Mawson tow has been quietly disappearing this week. That means about 2.5 m drift since Sunday. Some serious digging out required for this weekend.
It is STILL! coming down on south perisher cams
Temps dropping behind this line of showers (front?) crossing the bay/metro area now.
Avalon, Sheoaks and The Otways have shed a few degrees with it's passing.
Been out for a couple of hours at Perisher each since Tuesday. Snow quality on Tue-Wed was amazing, today was a little sticky with a bit of a slab on top, still great just not up to the standard of the last couple of days. Pretty amazing that today was meant to back off a little but it felt just as brutal out there today as it did the last couple of days. The wind was picking up again to ~120kph by the end of today.
Coverage is incredible with Cornices in places we haven't seen before. Other areas are flattening out and features disappearing. Sat or Sunday is going to be interesting when we finally get to see the top of the mountain for the first time.
Judging by BOM obs of Buller, it will be rather wet there. Hopefully temps will drop enough to add a nice surface layer for the weekend!
Fat flakes at 1pm onward today.
Rain till about 10, mizzle till about 1 and then snow.
Rain didn't touch it, was plenty cold enough.
Sunday will be the best bet for a lengthy break in the clouds IMO.
Raining in Box Hill.
Cheers for the obs @DbSki
Hopefully there will be a little bit of fresh snow to play with on Sat Morning.
I'm sure it will be very busy, but lucky I am pretty good at manoeuvring around the hill at the right times.
Certain there will be.
Too cold for the rain to hurt anything and snowing handily in the arvo
Baw Baw very damp at present .. Hopefully temps drop. Not complaining though Have not seen it this thick for a long time
Front just moved through in the last 15min up here in strezlekis.
Heavy rain and temp drop from 9.5 to
7.5c so far
In Canberra today felt like mid July not spring and ive been loving the snow pics. If any one needs a lift up there from Canberra I can probably take them not sure about dropping back though
are we thinking chains up to thredbo sat morn?
Not a chance IMO
Certainly not with that traffic.
Thank you for an honest appraisal . I have been in Perisher today and yesterday . There is lots of snow and lots of good fresh and windblown . It is right up there but is no where near the best snow I've ever skied on anywhere in the world or oz ( 48 years skiing here ) do not believe any powder bs that being peddled. Don't get me wrong it's great skiing and I've had an epic 2 days
music to my ears
Its good though to get a decent amount for a change
Welcome @Ret-ro and to all the other new faces that have joined in the observations fun, over the past week.
It's very rare - OK, it's never happened - that I have skier jealousy reading these forums, living in Europe as I do and getting to ski every year in France, Switzerland and Austria. But right now, I have jealousy. It's a crappy autumn day here, with months to go before I can ski, and looking at all the reports and pics of untracked powder is making me deeply envious and frustrated.
Keep 'em coming though
Observe I'm sick of the rain. Been 24 hours of wet at Buller. Anyone have a view when the wind is going to swing away from the dreaded W or temps go below -3? Want to get out on the best cover forever.
Should go more south westerly later tonight and over the day tomorrow. Temps should also go down overnight. But it's not going to be anything like Tuesday and Wednesday. The thing with Buller is you have to be in the thick of the storm to benefit.
However maybe 5cm tomorrow and a mostly sunny Sunday should make you happier .
This is payback for the sublime Mon/Tues/Wed
2 weeks ago Tuesday it was porridge and snot.
Today I bashed down to creek and across MTB trails to the bottom trail and there was un tracked a plenty and it wasn't slow at all.
Up top it was scoured by winds and looked like that didn't happen last night.
The observation I rely on mostly any sign of the APIRA roof clearing and it didn't from yesterdays falls, it was still there this morning in this afternoon.
If it rains by any margin that could effect snow that roof is cleared, its sheet metal and steeper than it looks on cam.
If the APIRA roof doesn't clear of snow on it overnight it means there was no rain or if any it wasn't warm enough to have any effect of wetting the snow making it heavy, and lubricating the metal roof.
A few mm of light cold rain over a ton load of snow inst going to do much if anything IME
At the car at HH it was 0.5C when I got there and it was raining very lightly
Arvo after it had snowed earlier it was 1C at HH when I left and that was the dash temps while driving.
Still snowing at Smiggins. Less wind, but similar flakes.
Not bad the new Aussie winter. 5 days flat out snow.
Looking at the cams it appears the Vic resorts did rather well overnight. Cedarwood at Falls Creek and the Lake Mountain carpark are lookin' good.
Low level snow in Hobart this morning. Looks to be about 200-250m ASL. These photos just south of Hobart.
Buller is reporting 9cm of fresh snow. Nothing like earlier this week, but still very nice skiing.
