Took a snow chasing trip up to Trentham, VIC after reading @POW_hungry prediction of snow around the 2:30pm mark.

A bleak, rainy 4c (according to the car). Feels it outside, very brisk. Will hang around for a bit and see what happens. Rain drops have that heavy feeling to them if that makes any sense.

    Nah, nah. Trentham NSW.

    Jokin'!
Nice band inbound right now for Trentham, maybe 10 mins?
A little one behind lining up too.

the Hotham tables making yet another appearance with a winter coat as of half an hour ago.

15cm ish, maybe even 20cm there on that aspect.
Buller looks caked as well, perhaps more like 10-15cm.

I am currently on the top of Mt Canobolas near Orange 1395 m asl and it is snowing quite heavily and very wind blown but not settling yet.
I’m looking forward to the snow lowering to the level of town around at 860 - 900 m asl, later this evening as predicted.
Now settling.... I am out of here !

It tried very hard to snow in Trentham, VIC @POW_hungry however sadly we only got some sleet in both the lines of showers that came through.

Still, was a nice little escape from home - never been to Trentham before, will have to come back.

Still a chilly 5c according to the car.

Talk about holding me to it. ;)

I think going off Himawari8 infrared, we've seen the coldest 500mb air through that region now, so you gave it your best shot.
    Thanks for the obs.

We're seeing the scraped-back frontal band move through Sydney just now and it really does have that winter appearance about it (blue/purple cloud base, stiff Westerly etc).

Those tables at swindlers accumulate 2 or 3 times natural i reckon. They look awesome, and of course the great thing about hotham is that whatever is scraped off by the wind ends up somewhere in the valley

That said, Falls and Buller don’t look too far off it.

I think somewhere between 10-20cm is a reasonable suggestion for totals so far for the Vic resorts.

Need a snow cam at the bottom of Dam Run, one at bottom of Blue Ribbon at Hotham, one on international at Falls. Marketing will never allow it though!

‘Just check the snow cams, we’re not trying to hide anything’ say the resorts. Yerrrrrr right......

Haha never would mate, just read your post and took a punt on it - better to be out there chasing it than sitting at home bored & wondering "what if". Thanks for giving your thoughts on the possibility of it :)

Thought of heading up to Mt Macedon @Jellybeans however wanted to get home in time to make dinner :). My friend in Macedon is going to head up for a looksee.

I observe it’s been socked in at PV and CP.....Gate at PV open and road clearing in progress.

Wind has backed of somewhat so decent flake size. Good lower temps now. It feels cold and snow is sticking.

Spoke to a guy on Kosi Rd who had snowshoed up Eyre. Then back via Spencer’s. Keen but he seemed well kitted out. Was calling 15 cms plus up high.

Showers have been absent for an hour since the last flurry, but now very cold at almost 0° C…and there's a gnarly rainband going up Central VIC on the radar. If that hits me, and that's a very big if, then it'll be my first non-fizzer snow event of 2020. Fingers crossed!

EDIT (5:01 PM): Nope, another fizzer.

Fizzer then, because that rain band in central VIC is heading NNE.

To be fair, its really only a fizzer if all models are in agreeance that you should expect snow, and then you don't receive any. It was always going to be a struggle for moisture anywhere east of the main range as usual with these W/SW systems.

Only got about 10 minutes of sleety rain here in Jindy as the heaviest band passed over the mountains. Currently 4 degrees

It's the westerly systems that produce the best snowfalls for the Eucumbene region (they're the only reliable source of rainfall as well), so I expect better. But you're right, this particular system was initially forecast to steer northwards early…making it a Tablelands event, rather than an ideal Snowies/SW Slopes event.

I've underestimated the skill of our forecasters.
