Lots of high level cloud with this system
It’s been recycling puffing billy through the SW for while now.
Cams show a wintery mix at Thredbo.
Yes, but there's snow visible all the way down to Friday Flat which I didn't expect
Perisher, temps are marginal as expected.
A day for rain apparel in the backcountry,
Dumping at falls. Starts about a km up the road from howman's gap.
Medium to heavy rain Thredbo village. Looks mixed higher up.
4-5cm on the ground at Buller since it started at about 7:30am.
More ran than snow at the top of Thredbo
Steady rain and gusting wind - Woodridge Thredbo
Told ya it would snow. Canned the trip to Buller cos the forecasted rain. The fresh has just avoided me this year.
A few clues to this system that indicated it could snow earlier were the temps in Perth when the system landed, the lack of moisture from the NW and the super cold air from the south that sat over VIC over the past few days. Someone above had said it's progged to warm up this arvo though.
MEL Skew-t 9am this AM:
-22C @ 500mb
0C @ ~1700m
Saved by the Northerly adiabatic wind and uppers IMO.
It's enough, JUST.
GFS indicating the 'faintest' portion of cool air in lower atmos... it's enough.
The big question is, will it hold? I am not so sure it will for Buller given Winds are expected to swing Westerly. Hotham & Falls appear safe IMO.
3.5mm since 9am in the Dandenongs. Temp was 10c at 9 am, felt very warm compared to the minus mornings we have had this week. Now sitting on 7c.
Just came in to blue cow terminal quite wet after a challenging morning here at perisher
Started off quite promising with light but persistent wetish snow around 830
Nice amongst the trees around interceptor early but a bit sticky and slow now especially on runs exposed and head on into the wind e.g. snake trails and the flat bits e.g it was a long hard push to the bottom of interceptor from pv double whereas all week it been easy and no pushing
Blowing and snowing pretty hard but still probably a little too warm but i would say adding to the cover
Drying out and contemplating next move
Sort of day where its nice to be inside
Yr liked it and it hasn’t failed me for the last 2 years.
Just came back from a funny ski, decided to ski Wood Run and skin out, but when I got there it was full of people as the lift had just started turning, so I jumped on and froze my bum off as I had dressed super light for touring! Beat a hasty retreat back to the flat and will dress better for my next foray.
5-7cm of new I would guess, bit heavy, hasn’t quite accumulated enough to cover the firm base underneath. Howling Northerly at the top of the lift.
Some flakage, some clear stuff at Friday Flat
Wow, even lake mountain getting it!
Scotts and ruined on wind hold . Brutal wind up top at falls.still snowing.
Nah, still straight r**n in Thredbo Village. Quite loud on the roof.
Snowfall is starting to look dryer now , lower down at Perisher.
Another cuppa and some harden up for round 2 this arvo.
Snowing down to ~1600m I'd say.
Still absolutely puking at Buller. Hasn't let up since it started at about 7:30am.
Looking at the radar there's probably only a couple of hours left but a good patch heading for Falls/Hotham
Spot on based on cams, but it's a mix of snow and rain. Snow looks very wet too, watching high noon cam and nobody's turns are throwing any snow. Better than solid rain though!
Edit - Thredbo
Lower in Vic. Snow to bottom of slalom gully and Falls village level, ~1500m.
Cold pool for NSW. Near wagga.
Bull Run chair is about 1450m at the bottom and it was snowing fine down there a couple of hours ago.
Snowing just below White Bridge according to some friends on their way up.
Still looks like Vic warms up a bit in the arvo though
as expected. lower than expected to date though which is a bonus if nothing else.
Yep, obs all pretty close to most predictions here IMO. Not bad for such an odd, messy-looking system (or systems).
That is an amazing result (so far!) if it is snowing down to White Bridge. The temps are down to -2.1 degrees at the BOM weather station now as well - that's by the Tirol café I think?
Oh, and it's still hosing it down in Sawmill.
Yes AWS is at Tirol which is roughly 1700m.
Flurries of winter mix starting at Friday Flat level. First signs of flakage at this level all day, but still more rain than snow. Promising signs though.
Seems to be all white now.
Some flakes starting to float at village level.
I observe I wore the wrong clothes because 'somebody' forecasted 17 degrees in Melbourne and snow on ' the higher peaks '
Snowing howmans gap
Yeah can confirm, juuuust about starting to snow in Thredbo village, definitely flakes...still "loud" with drops on the roof and gutters running
White stuff now falling at Woodridge - still quite wet.
Well lower than expected.
Min 20cm on Cedarwood since 8am.
God knows which village...
yes he does.....
but my poor etiquette is no excuse... Thredbo.
