Maragle, NSW; 948 m AMSL; 35.86° S
I observed a daytime inversion down in the Murray Valley…accompanied by wind and rain! It was raining at 8 °C when I left Tumbarumba, but when I got to Jingellic it was only 5 °C in the afternoon—that's not more than 300 m AMSL.

At Walwa it was shockingly cold; on the lower end of 4 °C under the heaviest showers, and I could've sworn it were sleet in some of the rain drops! Walwa seems to have maxed at just 6 °C today—that's only a degree warmer than at nearby Hunters Hill which stands about 700 metres higher.

A very long way from everybody
I drove up the Alpine Way early afternoon today. Steady light rain from about Khancoban, turned to sleet at about 1170m (from my GPS so not that accurate), then snow at 1400m and started settling at 1500m. Lots of snow players at the top of the divide then back to wintry mix below 1500m. Raining as I passed Thredbo. Currently at Island Bend, sprinkling on & off. Wind is building up.

It’s blowing a gale here in the upper parts of Falls Creek Viilage, accompanied by a disgusting rain/sleet mix - based partly on visual, partly audio evidence. It’s chucking it down now (~ 0C up top, ~ 2C in the village)

I drove from hotham to Falls (with fam) late this arvo. It was pea-soup fog the top third of Hotham. But Falls had even thicker fog @ 6pm tonight.

Frankly, it’s a bloody good night to chuck another log on the fire, enjoy a port or two, and not expect too much of the morning - in Vic. ;)

Drive up to Perisher this morning was pretty wild. Very heavy snow at times, making visibility challenging. Snow from Wilsons valley @1450m. Still snowing, and windy. Hard to gauge amount from the car, as they are clearing the carpark, but the piles of snow at the edges of the park are pretty impressive

Buller reporting 17cm. We have about 5cm on our balcony and my usual rule of thumb is to double the balcony count to get closer to the real number. Depends on the wind direction of course. 17cm seems bold but here's hoping!

Looks like Perisher picked up atleast 20-25cm over night.
Perisher AWS registered a staggering 9mm/hour fall rate between 2-3am this morning.

Gotta be glad this was during nocturnal hours, with marginal temps the way they were.
I expected a big more clear stuff.
So thankfully the temps were cold at the witching hour.

The amazingly high rate of precipitation would have helped as well (@perisher). On the drive up this morning I was in a very heavy localised area for 5min, as heavy rate of snowfall as I have ever seen on the road here
Indeed.

I think the residual temps from a reasonably cold day and saturday night would have helped as well.

Obs from PV.

40 cms (average) of very heavy snow above 1850 ASL. That was around Mt P. Once it was tracked out skiing got pretty tough - typical of wet snow and consistent with the overnight temps snd conditions.

Visibility poor most of the morning.

Winds gusty above around 1900 ASL. Enough to have chairs on wind hold.

New snow cover along Kosi Rd. Reasonable amounts down to circa 1500 ASL, or thereabouts.

This new snow, IMO, will help the snowpack to defend itself in regards to the forecast weather Wed / Thursday. Last nights total was a real bonus.

10cm, maybe 15cm higher up at Buller. Highly annoying crust on top of the fresh which meant you had to be on your game with your edges most of the time. Was good in a few of the bowls and the trees where the crust didn't seem to have formed.

I hit the lifts at Falls quite late today (>3:30pm)

Shocking visibility over the back at Cloud 9 and down Towers. High wind chill too (App. temp ~ -10, Dry bulb <-2C at Summit most of the day).

We also had a freezing mist up top ~ 4:00pm - making for even worse personal visibility (if that’s possible?)

Fwiw: Im in the upper village near the aqueduct (~1580m), looks like we’ve had some recent fresh v wet snow. It’s still quite breezy through the village trees but it’s not howling across the chimney like last night (at times).

The ‘semi-calm’ before the storm.

Furthermore to Falls obs for late PM:

The snow was pretty nice to ski on - when you could actually see?

But the north side snow pack is definitely much shallower as one descends below about 1650m.

Victim of warm, & alternating sunny & wet days?
