Some interesting reading on http://www.wildsnow.com about a 24hr skiing race in the states. Looks very much like a 24hr mtb race (The Mont for example) on snow. The winners (on AT gear) climbed 50000 feet of vert in 24hrs. Looks like a blast.

There ae quite a few of these races in Europe and North America.

Some equipment such as the Atomic MX20 is made pretty much especially for the puppies who compete in this form of torture...whoops I mean fun.

Imagine how far they could have gone on Telemark gear, it's so much faster.

Doh!.. I just read the website.. (btw that link is broken above...)

Another issue is how much vertical was skied, and how was it measured? I spoke with race organizer and producer Mike Marolt about this. He said the course was measured multiple times with GPS at 1,555 feet.

If you glance at the event website you’ll notice that it lists vertical skied by the winners as 32 laps, 49,760 feet — just under the reported world record of 50,000 vertical.

James, some do it on telegear. But the top of the field come from an Apline background and hence race in that format. Interestingly enough the other equipment specially used recently is and alipne boot with a tele bellows. So once they un-jamb their heel pieces they'll be right.

Very impressive considering that they are probably spending 5 minutes every hour skiing down the 600m vertical they've just gained. I struggle to walk after 1500m vertical over 8 hours.

And the average gradient, if my map is correct... is (474m vertical gained, div by 2630m horizontal on ascent) = average gradient on ascent of: 1m in 5.5m. [12 to 15 degrees?] Not too bad.

I've based the pink route on the nighttime pic above... I assume the ascent (dotted section) runs around the perimeter of the resort on its eastern edge, gaining the required 1,555 feet.
