    Why would ya?
Perisher season passes $699....120 days, or so... Oh, and they're good for the Vail USA resorts for the rest of the year. There is some wierd disproportionate value comparisons going on in lift pass land right now.

I won't be getting one, but the vast majority of the Australian ski market most likely skis an average of 6 days per season. Compared with walk up day prices of $100++ and consecutive fixed multi day offers this is great value.
Prepaid season passes are guaranteed up front income for the Lift Companies but the one week, and less, per year skiers are subsidising our 50 and 100 plus days per season.

Agreed.....the value comparisons are way out of whack. As a more than 50 days a season skier, I had no trouble justifying a $1200 ski pass. The $699 deal was just a free hit for peeps like me. But $100 a day is just a kick in the head for the long weekend/ casual/ beginner skiers. Hopefully, balance will be achieved eventually, but it seems (locally and overseas) the current imbalance will remain for the foreseeable. :(

I'll always be a season pass skier but 6 day anytime tickets are great for some.

Last year, Perisher did a $299 3 day pass with an unlimited $99 a day top-up........I thought that was a semi-reasonable offer.........still $100 a day, but at least not $120+.
But if there's ANY chance you're going to ski more than 6 days a year...............

NSW annual NPWS pass is $190 ( entry to Thredbo and Perisher) no date limits, further discounts for second vehicle. Vic seems to be paying over the odds for some stuff. Why?

Vic resort entry has nothing to do with national parks. Each resort is managed by a separate government applied board.

Not saying cost is justified, but resort management has to cover it's budget from a combination of site fees and entry fees. It has to be approved by government, but basically they charge what they think they need to cover costs.

So, as a result, skiing in Vic is more expensive than NSW? (I'm not pushing a barrow here.....just looking at comparisons).

OTOH I think you can get on snow accommodation cheaper in Vic.

My only reference to NSW accomodation is Jindy.........probably cheaper than Vic, but 20 minutes from the action. Ski in-Ski out was one of my favourite features of skiing Mt Buller for several years:thumbs:

If you think there's an imbalance with overseas lift ticket prices you might be skiing in the wrong places.

No, I'm saying there's an imbalance between heavily discounted season passes and the cost of casual day passes.....and that seems to apply everywhere. While I enjoy being able to ski pretty much all year on a $699 pass, I do sympathise with weekenders and short holiday peeps that are paying $100+ per day.
.....and I've never skied in a wrong place yet! :)

I'm getting one of these this year. Good value, except if you compare it against the cost of a hero pass...

    Just as a comparison...

    Walk up price in Vail

ie $235 Aussie, and that's a off peak price o_O

You'd be a mug not to take advantage of bundled packages like Currawong (Falls/Hotham) and Normo (Vail/Perisher) have said.

We got one a couple of years ago when the season before I did my knee and wasn't sure how I would hold up. We knew we would get 6 days but didn't want to get the Hero Pass in case I couldn't ride.

    Sorry, I clearly misunderstood.

Here where I am in France a single day pass is around 35 euros and discounted season pass is somewhere between 260-300 euros. Would you consider that an imbalance?

This. Wait until you see what Perisher charges for walk up on Saturdays in August this year. The Hotham/Falls pass is a pretty good deal

35 euro a day to ski in France is excellent value! That converts to about $54 aud..........season pass of $600 would be fine with that level of daily pass. I think once you get to 6 days = season pass cost, there is an imbalance.
did you buy a season pass for the French resort you are at?

It may be an imbalance, but ski resorts are businesses. With so many australian skiers spending ski dollars overseas, they need to find a way to encourage more skiing spending at home. season passes cutting in early is aimed at that. first the buyer commits to a minimum spend, rather than waiting to see what conditions are like on the day. secondly it locks skiers into your resort. thirdly it makes it more attractive to make extra trips during the season.

it is a boon for ski tragics like us who were going to go anyway, but it makes commercial sense. there are a lot more season pass holders now than pre freedom pass. i don't think that day pass prices have increased because of cheaper season passes so I don't really think non season pass holders are worse off. it could be argued (bit of a long bow) that cheap season passes are giving a more secure income and restricting rises in day pass prices

As a resident, my season pass cost me 120 euros. The early-bird season pass (available to everyone) is under 300 euros (50% off normal price) and a 6 day pass is around 170 euros. There are almost 250 resorts in France, hence it's a very competitive market, so a lot of lesser-known resorts offer excellent value. Even the mega-resorts provide better value than 'equivalent' resorts in North America.

Maybe they have been reading the FC subforum here ...

I am doing Hero Pass this year even though I am only up for a week - just break even.

Wish they could give free bus rides from DP to Hotham with the Hero Pass - I would forego other benefits for it.
    If they are listening......

    Correction

the lift co have sent out a correction. Kids and seniors 6 day anytime pass is $279

On the plus side, kids are now defined as under 18, not under 15.

For those who didn't want to commit to a season pass in October or couldn't justify the overall cost / benefit.
For those who are sitting on the fence about booking a winter holiday this year, this fits the bill at an enticing price.
For those who only take one trip a year. $499 is much cheaper than $749 for a Hero Pass, or a regular any 6 of 7 day.

I would say FC has segmented their market nicely and targeting accordingly.

Besides, not everyone can / wants to drive to Perisher :p

OK.....glad there's a bunch of people happy with the offering. I'll pull my head in and stop suggesting that day / weekend / 7 day passes should be cheaper.........:)

Of course we'd all love it if they were... But that ain't happening, ever. So appreciate the improvements in value that we do get from time to time.

Not sure if OP mentioned this but the 6 days can be used at Falls or Hotham similar to a hero pass. Much better value than a 6 from 7 if you are planning on skiing both resorts.

1973 I learnt to ski at Buller. Top of baldy was like that, probably narrower. None the less I was addicted immediately
