Another front coming through tonight, and although many people have mentioned it, it has been in the may 6-8th thread, so to avoid confusion, here's a separate thread on it.

to me it looks like the resorts will get only snow from this one, with snow down to around 1400/1300 meters by the time it arrives tonight. only a short sharp burst of showers though, ie 24 hours max, before the moisture dries up. however i think there is the possibility of 10cms up to for the higher resorts in the 24 hours to 6pm tomorrow night. Pressure is hovering around 1010/1012 which is a touch too high for any decent falls, but with temperature around 0 at the moment, set to increase to about 1C before the front then dive down again, any precipitation that will fall should be snow.

current obs show the SW of VIC to be pretty dry at the moment, i was expecting some rain in that around about now. temperatures are probably still a bit too high, but as the day goes on we'll see how that pans out.

often a warmer system that proceeds a cold system will bring snow to lower than predicted levels (and some time freezing rain) due to cold air lingering around the peaks...

This is all very nice, a nice westerly system set up with embedded fronts...

And it seems some resorts have commenced grooming (looks like they are packing it down at Merits)

That sounds a little back to front to me, do you mean a cold system that proceeds a warm system?

Edit: Hmm maybe i'm just confusing your odd usage of 'proceeds' with 'preceeds'...

Does'nt look like rain on the front valley PB cam although it is .3 degrees. Looks like snow to me.

Some moisture bands starting to come across Vic and SE SA. Still think that there is 10c's in this in the next 24hrs. Feels and looks like mid winter, but still a month to go so anything could happen.

I think that the ground has cooled now....

Flew down to Melbourne this afternoon and plenty of cloud looking west out of the plane window. Not that it means much but hopefully there is some snow in it.

Absolutely P%$^%&! down in Melbourne now and cold. Looks like the temp at PB has gone into the negs so should be some top up snow tonight. Any update Fonc Dawg?

Was out on the main range this morning and experience the front come through. There was about 5 minutes of misty showers before it turned to light snow. I left charlotte pass at 1pm and it just started coming down heavier. Was snowing down to PB at that time but looked like it had lowered as i looked back at the mountains from east jindabyne. Some freaky looking high cloud formations with the front. Looking at thredbo AWS it looks as though its warmed up a tad. At least up high will be really nice after this.

well, it's only early May, not mid winter. ....To be expected.

The main advantage of snow caover in May is NOT to build a base, but to stop the sun warming the ground. In that regard, ANY sustained snow cover, however thin, is helpful.

Yep, was warmer than I thought but ditto Sandy...

now it is time to turn on the guns IMHO, on the high traffic areas, and early openers get something down on this thin cover...

The resort with open runs will get the riders!

Not much activity in Tasmania, light snow cover to the 500 metre level this morning. At noon the lower level snow was gone but it was still cold enough to hold it a bit higher up [IMG]

For the Tassy viewers there is another public webcam for Mt Wellington. This is probably the best one available although it is not always working.

    http://www.innkeeper.com.au/webcam.htm

The snow on the Cradle webcams is consistent with the Mawson images above around 10-20cm fresh.
