This is the edit that was made in Asahidake early Feb 2008. This was one of the best powder days I can remember and this vid won the best powder award but then for some reason it was pulled and not seen. However it's resurfaced. These guys were skiing skier right of the gondola all day and we were on skiers left. It was deeper on our side as we got in before this crew and put a line down that side on the second run before moving back over the other side.

These guys were going beserk and at lunch time we sat next to each other with no words spoken. Just the odd puzzled look as to why we were the only people on the mountain in bottomless. Neither of our groups game to speak unless we should give the secret away.

Granted it doesn't look that deep in the vid but it was. https://www.powder.com/powder-awards-archive/influences-will-wesson/

This is a pic from the day after this day.

If I knew how to get footage from DVD to the interwebby I would put up a couple of edits from this day. I might see what I can do. Me in front and at the time head of ASPA behind me.

I can say I have been at Asahidake when the snow was like the opening shots. We spent a lot of time digging ourselves out of holes after falling over. Bloody good fun but.

Hard place to get in sunshine. Been there about 3-4 times in different years and never got sun.

Certainly had several great days there in various conditions over the last 20 years, snowy, stormy & fine. Remember the old 2 stage ropeway. Though nothing like the lines those guys in the video. I really like the gladed bowl skiers left of the ropeway. Also some amazing days touring out above and beyond the resort area on the clear days.

Asahi Dake was always thus. Until maybe 4/5 years ago you could ski powder on demand, we just took it for granted, having skied and guided there since the mid 80's find it hard to go there now and see lift lines! Back in the 90's and early 2000's it was pretty much just my groups on most days, for each gondola, and a nightly reset of our tracks when it was at its best. Locals mostly came in spring. As Heinz, says, plenty of terrain lift access and BC. Still great on its day but you have to pick it. A couple of pics out from the ropeway.

It’s all your fault mate. You couldn’t keep it a secret forever, unfortunately.

I can’t go back. A vivid memory of that day was pulling into the car park with three cars in it and two belonged to staff. We walked in and one of the staff had just come down from the top on his snowboard and he was covered in pow. He put his hand above his head and gestured deep. We were the only group in the cable car on the first couple of runs and for most of the day for that matter. There was the odd local that showed up plus that group making the movie and that was it.
