So at my peril I joined a couple of back country Facebook groups to pass the time whilst waiting (and waiting) for the Victorian snow. Lo and behold a shit-storm kicked off about posting photos from the back country and my what a bunch of elitist, self important chaos has ensued.

As an antidote I just thought I’d give a big thumbs-up to Nick Taylor who wrote a very good response on a post of his own, and shared an actual video which I very much enjoyed and you can find here:

Nick if you are reading this, well done and I hope you are ok with me sharing your video on this platform.

The social media generations endless stream of snippets of visual fame is a modern addiction but I kind of feel a little pity for the new breed froth crew as it's all been done before, just quietly on Polaroid with a silent high five.

Back country for all, take nothing but the experience, reveal in the sharing in the moment with those at the moment.

Elitist is a word so badly understood and so quickly applied.

Only the Karen's give a shit and this thread is a total nonsense.

Carry on up the hill.

Probably right, perhaps the better term might be selfish localism masquerading as faux concern.

In any case my reason for starting this thread was not to recreate the rubbish in question on this forum, but to share a video that I think perfectly captures many aspects of the Australian BC experience (I certainly identified with most of it) and I thought it might be well received by the crew that lurk around here, as well as being useful viewing for any newcomers that are thinking of heading out for the first time.

It takes quite some effort to construe a request to temper the posting of photos of special places into "selfish localism".

What next .... stacking rocks in wild places for fleeting Instagram self promotion, can you imagine if such inanity became a thing?

In posting this video with a notion that "it may be useful for new BC skiers" you have done exactly that which it is you critic.

    Carry on

Keeping in mind the author of the facey post ( which I support) is a well respected contributor to these forums.
His intent was rock solid, well founded concerns for the anticipated froth overflow into the bc.
i.e Lack of knowledge , awareness , preparation... summarize as understanding & respect of the environment .
    ( 2 rescues already ?)
the lynch mob where all to eager to go hard.
    lets calm the farm.
    as was his intent.
    IMO.
personally I too have an uneasy feel about the future ,
bit like country kids getting a boogie board for xmas......

Its kinda like the froth about carrying a beacon without any mention of crampons for ice.

The weather and the ice are the primary dangers but get little mention in the deluge of bright sunny froth Instagram tokens.

The original FB post remains valid no matter how hard the frothers try to yell "entitled".

These times and motivations appear very different to what came before. I do try and understand the instant share mentality but .... "posts shots of uncrowded and in doing so attracts crowds". Solitude is for sale and the price is a give away.

    IMHO.

IMO the interweb hashtag / beautiful out there / fully sick, gnarly pix, glamorise the BC and it’s portrayed living on the edge / counterculture / honed and buffed wankerism without portraying the real experience, all the 10% pleasure without the 90% effort/pain, a little like the la de da Vogueing glamour lifestyle pix.
Both are not true to real life but visually enticing to the naive.
I’ve been guilty of posting such pix on occasion ( but then really @telecrag and @climberman are quite beautiful)

Anything that makes anyone have second thoughts about going outside resort boundaries is a good thing. If you have stopped having second thoughts you have become blase, and should start having them again, even if your third thought is to decide to go.

I sound flippant, because I am. If you do not possess common sense, then I would say good luck.

I have had some bad experiences, and I would say its a combination of my common sense (arguable I know) and luck, that I have not been badly injured or killed. Sometimes there are objective dangers, and you choose to play the odds.

Agree to disagree with the intention of the original FB post, but hey each to their own.

In relation to my sharing the video, watch it or don’t. Share it if you want to, or don’t, but I don’t quite follow the logic that not showing photos of the BC is more effective at preventing inexperienced people doing dumb shit than widely sharing videos that show the reality. But despite all this, it’s also just a great vid that I thought a lot of people here would get a kick from.

Likewise, share photos of you want, or don’t if you don’t. But don’t flame others if they want to share their pics as most of us who don’t get the chance to ski every other weekend mostly love to see them. I can’t speak for NSW, but at least in Vic, the BC is never going to be overrun by crowds regardless of how many insta-worthy photos people wish or don’t wish to post, the reality it’s just too much of a slog to access (as I think this video accurately shows).

But this thread is definitely heading in the same direction as the one that I wished not to recreate, so I’m out.

Carry on (without me) if you wish.

I personally don't reckon pretty photos is going to encourage silly people to make silly decisions - they're going to do it anyway.

I just think it's nice for the people who could never get out into the backcountry to get a small glimpse into it. Maybe I'm naive, but I reckon this whole "don't post too many photos because people will die" is a bit elitist IMO. Education would be more effective than trying to hide its existence (cough teaching abstinence in schools cough).

I think people posting stuff at the resorts has glorified it, and that is why the resorts are shit now.

    Same same?

They never show the bad side, unattractive ski suits, poor behaviour, its all glamour!

more a vibe and urban myth kind of thing.

the bottom line is there is plenty of snow, I don't see why people posting stuff on IG would be a problem.
I don't really get the need to hide or protect places. Should be for all to enjoy.

If that vid was supposed to warn others of bc pitfalls he shoulda made mention of snow shoeing up skin tracks!

I'm with you, I've got no idea what this thread is about. Then again I'm not on FB or insty. If you want to just share some stoke then put the link in chatter. But I'm not sure if the OP is saying surfing style localism is now becoming an issue in the BC, or that people will die due to BC perceived/real higher demand for the experience. Either way the thread title seems quite inflammatory, and if you think about it laterally sexist ha ha

I thought the fb initial poster (who posts here, and is well known and respected) just put forward a 'can we just think about it' post based on his experience in other areas, and was slammed for it. That's socials I guess.

There appear to be many variations of comprehension and English language skills in the FB world.

I ponder the variations are all part of the 10min Instagram attention sphere.

Hmmm I saw the post, and whilst I have no idea who the guy is and 100% believe he was coming from a good place (his comments later in the thread show he was a good sport about it all), I read the wording and tone to be a bit more “don’t share photos because us people who work for it hard every year don’t want it ruined by newbies”. Maybe it’s a case of tone being easily misread on the internet, but I hazard a guess that that’s why he was lynched, particularly in a private group dedicated to sharing the stoke.

Anyway this thread is probably coming close to airing grievances from a different medium and not really in the spirit of our forum, so I’ll tap out. But I just wanted to add a different view to say the Facebook OP’s tone wasn’t quite so “have a think about it” and more “don’t share our secret spots with newbies”, whether he meant it or not. And that attitude isn’t cool in any forum IMO.
