As someone who has never been in the backcountry but loves the idea of it and hopes to try it at some point this season, I would like to thank all of you experienced and expert bc guys for you photos and stories and knowledge that you share. It is inspiring. But you all seem like very safety conscious people and I really appreciate that you all emphasis that side of it. Does your sharing of pic and stories make me want to get out there? Yes absolutely. Does the thought of it scare me? Yes absolutely.
So a big ‘thank you’ to all of you who share.
I can’t speak to posts on social media as this site is the only sm I do, so I will never understand the motivation to post everything in your life for the world to see.

Yeah BC is not surfing; if it's such an issue then get up earlier, get there faster, try new lines. Plenty of space.
I was not 'slamming' the OP, I really don't understand this thread, guess you need to see the FB feed or whatever it's called for the full context.

This "reading of the post" appears to be aged based by those that evolved in a social media focussed every phone is a camera world ... dunno.

I ponder as a young bloke in a similar world would I have shared the secret spots so effortlessly.

The same age group evolved in the easy travel AST1 world which emphasised the carrying of a beacon so they "read" any counter to this emphasis as a personal affront and the "selling of safety" is now a business.

The critical mass of instantly connected now and online video is very different to the occasional slide night or travelling movie night at the local hall.

One however has to ask ... "Why share secret spots" with the whole connected world, why "prove" every event? I can only guess that first unreported discovery has been replaced by staged affirmation.

    Aging reflections

I suspect I'm not as young as you think I am, since I certainly did not grow up with a mobile phone or even internet. BUT I do get your point, we are in a social media age, and it saddens me to think that some of our younger generation put more emphasis on sharing photos rather than moments.

Regardless, my experience in this forum (and my limited BC experiences, lol) is that everyone is happy to share, with newbies and 'old dogs' alike, so it's all a bit academic anyway!

I think what we can all agree on though is that what we truly need is MOAR SNOWWWWWWW! So happy to see it puking down today :woohoo:

Have you seen the price of scroggin lately? To pricey for this muesli munching telemarker. I take bags of crumbled up wheat bix.

Not planning on doing it this year.

The wing is an acrobatic wing, sort of halfway between the two. Many speedwings fall in the 7 to 15 sq m size range. My full size wing is 25 sq m. His acro wing is probably about 20 sq m.

When I lived in Kitzbuhel, my local mates would often bring their paraglider's up on the mountain on the cable car, drop them at the top station ski with me all day and then collect their wings and, doing a ski take off fly home rather than ski home or download. One of the guys had a vacant field at the back of his house and they would land there. Nice way to end the day.
In the summer months other local friends who were hang glider pilots would often turn up at my place, unannounced and insist I drive up the mountain with them so that I could drive their car back down whilst they flew down. They would get to the top, build their kites, smoke a joint, and fly off into the sunset. It always looked beautiful. I would drive the car back down and leave it in the car park for them. I lived about 300m away so I would just walk home.

This effect is pretty well documented in NZ. Kids literally turn up at the DOC visitor centre at Mt Cook or wherever and ask the staff to tell them where some pic on instagram was taken and how to get there. In winter, they do the same, and bring their (non-touring) skis.

Every now and then in NZ some blow-in from overseas will try claim a first descent of some big aesthetic line. Quite often, it is politely pointed out that that thing was skied in the 80's.

A lot of my touring is well off the beaten track these days, and I'm happy to keep it that way.
