I’d like to to believe that they would invite me along for my sparkling personality, humorous repete and skills as a raconteur of note. The reality was that they just wanted someone to drive the car back down for them and I lived nice and close to the gondola station so I was convenient.

Up in the Bulls Peaks, I found them pretty darn handy! A little bit of reassurance as I nervously go about stretching my nav skills :)

I have found places where there is a field of these stone stacks, so if you were to try and use them as a trail maker (which is pretty common on a lot of Tas routes) they are suddenly useless or problematic if you are in cloud and don't pick up you're in a field of stone stacks and go in circles following them.

rock stacking for art is a big no-no on the field nats and like earth critters sites.

i just collected some rocks from my rural property for the urban garden and even that got a few greasy looks from a car or 2 on the hume

Two bits of wisdom my dad told me once (talking about surfing, but relevant to all outdoor pursuits). People don't like to get up early, and they don't like to walk very far. If you want to get away from the crowds, just do those two things more.

YMMV - it's pretty hard to get up earlier than a keen surfer or road cyclist. And it's pretty hard to out-walk the Main Range backcountry snowsports crew. But mostly it holds true. Conversely I don't think there's too many BC skiers here that really do early starts - like headlamp-required starts.

Also, crowds attract crowds. People tend to flock to the same well-known spots on the main range. There are so many alternatives with good pitch and snow cover that just don't get much love.

Haha, that day at Club we counted over 40....

Ive only ever had it untracked a couple of times.

Mind you, there are plenty of trackless places to go. If you want to get away, you surely can.

Haha it will never change - it's because people are scared.

To use the surfing analogy - ever turned up to a spot and seen 200 people milling about on the same bank when there's an identical one ~30 seconds walk down the beach? It's because someone paddled out to the closest one first, and everyone else went where the people were so they feel safe.

Some English tourists I met once went for a holiday down the south coast. Took them a few days to realise you could go for a swim, there was just no one there. They thought there was a problem!

Mmm, I think the long term issue for the NSW backcountry is simply parking. All we have is Guthega and Dead Horse Gap. Perisher, Thredbo, and Guthega power station kind of count I suppose, of course Perisher already has huge demand, and Thredbo requires access through the resort.

I never imagined parking would be a problem at trailheads in the Blue Mountains and yet it's front and centre these days.

i had friends many years ago at disneyland do the thing when they started running towards something (nothing in this case) urgently, and soon had peeps trying to beat them to the non place they were going. Running between rides to avoid queueus is (was?) a thing at disneyland, but they were running away from any rides intentionally to see what happens

I think it's more of a thing in Vic, well it was for me at least. Walking up a bush walking track from CCG in the dark is pretty easy.

Headlamp off at the top of the Munyang penstock has worked well for me a few times! But it's also formed unpleasant associations – the power station carpark would have to be the most miserable sleep in all the mountains.

Parking is a challenge for NPWS/Council/TfNSW at a heap of local walking tracks in my area these days. Walking, especially some of the steep tracks. Is super popular and parking is really limited. In some areas they are basically a very back street and now ‘busy’ in weekends and early dawn starts for the run/walk/train brigade (which sometimes includes me). Other times it’s on main roads and the road and parking arrangement is super dangerous some days.

Lovely to see people out using our shared resources but can be a challenge to manage. Especially as parking is super super expensive to build and kind of useless outside of busy times, and also encourages more driving.

to bring back some reasonableness, there are many and varied Vic access options, but most are hard, some quite hard.

NSW gets the crowds in the BC due to @sbm_ father-theory on how humans work, and not alot of parking points for this great access

I've heard from a reputable source that DHG is banned to overnight parking this season, which means the parking situation in Guthega will be absolutely faaarked!

Finally someone mentioned my big take away.

@dawooduck the horse has bolted on the insta lifers. Sk!ts me as much as the POV cameras.

Politely ask your snowboard buddy with snow shoes, to walk beside the f'n skin track.

    Harsh:D.

While I might be ski centric I draw the line at such draconian measures. I'm happy for our snowboarding bretheren to flap along in snow shoes, just not in the skin track.

Warning snowboarders with shoes, stay away from @Chowder11 in the BC.:mad::mad:;)

I just had such a good old chuckle when I remembered the time I munched a skin track all the way to the Hilton. Early 90’s IIRC. I had no clue at the time and can just hear the swearing from the poor bloke that came up later.
