now the upstream of the twin fords is somewhat tricky so take care with low clearance vehicles....
and please bring in chainsaws with spare chains and necessary gear to deal with the likes of one of these as DSE cannot always come and rescue you...doesnot matter how long you take to do the job just have the resources with you to do the job please...impressive gateway on way in from down stream end over tributary

yes apologies for mess around campfire...not enough time to clean it up...as light failed on sunday...it will be cut and order restored shortly.....so now most of blackberry operation has been done...once this grasses over it will be good for pitching tents well away from some of the bigger trees on the block..nearly all blackberries sprayed some months ago have now been removed....the odd rock pulled out and old crotty logs chopped up and removed...hopefully other users can respray from time to time any regrowth in here...vehicles can get access right up to the "campsite boundary" now...enjoy....

I was up that way at the start of the Easter weekend, and noticed some of your work. Your doing god's work killing the blackberries up there, damn things are everywhere!

Team Bears are only managing to make a few campsites a bit more productive and hopefully the DSE will be able to send a Team in future to keep things at bay from making a return...at least they can drive around with spray unit and give it a good go over.....maybe some of the local with more blackberry experience can bring in their spray tanks when there in for a fishing trip and do an hour or so of work where ever they can....

them blackberries are very complex and are unique in their abilty to colonize and to recolonize even treated areas...
glad we got most of limited work done before rains set in....we hope the ones we poisoned soaked the stuff up and sufficient time was given for the roots to draw the stuff all in???

still another chop and burn weekend
    [IMG]
section at left and middle of photo freed up ....right back to poor gum tree in middle which had blackberries climbing into its lower branches...bit of spraying(hope its not too late in season) of front edge of thicket shown..
massive remnants from within blackberries cut up and stored in a more ordered
    [IMG]
and this dangerous fire hazard (chimney tree with dry interior) was delt with and eliminated completely.. weather was sunny and warm Dungey Track remains in good shape....now just about all summer works completed.....

Team Bears much happier with this complete...

some more work over another warm sunny weekend..log visible at the back has been totally removed...it was some feat say the Team...took two pulleys to roll it using a coach bolt as an anchor to get it out of its crater depression ....then lots of work with 064 to break it up for removal.....no chance of reversing in to it now...
Diesel could not pull it but with two pulleys and wire rope it was a breeze .....took ages to unkink the wire rope 6mm only tiny but bloody strong stuff..[IMG]

also blackberry thicket between sth side of campsite beside the river and close to the original fireplace area got a hammering too...thus reducing potential fire hazard for next fire season...that is straight over bears heads on other side of cleared area...
so it is much more manageable if a campfire chuck out embers..this is a temporary measure and blackberries will need to be sprayed as they regrow....also helps to keep any fire away from the two big stags(tall dead trees) in here...

Picnic Table No5 has been commissioned(installed last Saturday) at 'Concrete Bridge Camp Site" on the West Kiewa..

within the tree line but easily accessible from existing fire place 15 meters.....

not obvious from the road...certainly a low visual impact placement....pics will follow of this new development..

Note site is outside National Park Boundary...so purists stay calm!!!

The two tables at 'Big Logs Camp Site " were also given a coat of oil prior to the winter....

Large log on Nthn side of the West Kiewa at the Broad Ford Camp Site(first ford on Dungeys Track/West Kiewa has been brocken up to facilitate better use of the small existing space for tents/vehicles/etc..

Pics to follow later this week...:p:p:p grid ref 148169(Concrete Bridge Site...approx.)

please note work was finished in dark on removal of big log on this nthn side of the Broad Ford so its a bit untidy with debri...soon it will be tied up and wiper snipper will be run through the new area so it can reach its full potential for campers/vehicle parking etc...Team Bears envisage that tents can be placed right on top of the little rise so water will run off well from the area and with old log gone its possible to guy out tents/canvasses/etc which would have been previously impossible...;);)

frigin down pour on sunday early morning....tent leaking totally so Team Bears jumped into rodeo and slept till dawn//

Saturday arvo saw completion to new extension at nthn side of Broad Ford Campsite on WK River...wiper snipped/raked etc
just about all log debri moved down to fire site beside track..Weather was mild on Saturday arvo but we figured that all hell was about to break lose on sunday some time...

Sleeping on table Big Logs Campsite...could hear loud upper wind noise on ranges above while it was still in valley??
very interesting we thought....then 3.30am all hell broke loose....lightening/squall like rain/

Sunday morning it was settled for a while so we did a bit of brush cutter work pushing boundary of campsite to the east a bit more...but it was evident that this was no time to be in West Kiewa...forecast was for continual rain...
so we checked river height which was rising and cloudy... back over Broad Ford which was rising but fairly simple and out Dungeys Track which is whole lot shorter than West Kiewa Logging Road exit...

out via Pyramid Hill Fire Track to Mt Beauty.....retreating to Tawonga Sth General Store for take away..
still howling in valley so retreating seemed appropriate....;);)

two more tables got oil coated in preparation for winter....this means 4 of our 5 picnic tables have received about 2.5 L each..

our last inserted table at the "Concrete Bridge" Camp Site is still too "Wet" to paint...

Team Bears are rolling off a sixth destined for the Broad Ford(Dungeys Track/West Kiewa before Queeens Birthday its exact location is undecided but it will be placed to minimize visual disturbance but also to provide functional use by travellers...
Friday and Saturday were beautiful days in which to be up there...we factored in sunday as a non work day!!!

A stroll up to Blairs on a glorious sunny Saturday and after 4tanks of 2stroke Team Bears had solved the firewood problem....note damaged little window in Blairs Hut.....
we will open a Bogong Highplains Hut/Firewood thread shortly as we are now concentrating on these aspects prior to Queens Birthday Weekend.....

Sixth picnic table was inserted at DungeyFord on West Kiewa("Broad Ford Campsite..and oiled too..
Dungeys Track escaped any major tree fall after the 3days of gale force winds earlier in the week..

Ford was running somewhat deeper than normal and Team Bears forgot to engage 4x4 cos we were checking out our new rear Maxi Tyres and nearly conked out just before reaching other bank were water level is much deeper!!Maxi tyres are good good good...

West Kiewa Logging Rd was a minefield of debri going out towards Big Hill but somebody had spent hours cutting up the many fallen poles and medium sized logs so we just drove on thro the obstacle course....the gale force winds have a much greater affect on this route than the Dungey Track that is well protected below Pyramid Hill..very little new stuff was on the inward approach....

we also went on to Big Logs Campsite to check on the two tables and also to turn around so we can access the gentler approach up to the West Kiewa Logging Rd rather than take on the steep clay like hill...

so access wise all is patent upto Big Logs Campsite from either route....beyond who knows.....????:p:p:p:p

oh pics of new table which is situated on nthn side of WKRiver on a slight rise:thumbs: but out of way of camping/tent pitching/driver and parking....u can drive 4x4 right up to this table....
this seems to be a feature of our new installations!!!;););)

I love the work mate and hope to run the Pathfinder up there one summer/Autumn. Soon!

FWIW: Bloody blackberries! Scourge Of the alps.

I've seen thickets 3-4m high and metres across next to the AWT near Mt Clear (ironic name) in the Buller/Howitt area of Vic. Totally inpenetrable and presumably left to grow for years!

photos are coming of most recent table at camp ground on Dungey Track/West Kiewa Ford(broad ford)hopefully sometime this week...wish CSIRO would come up with something to systematically kill them....
all one can do is to spray them around campsites and then respray them...each year...:p

Westons Hut was the target for wood gathering activities over the wet/cold weekend...
Team Bears decided that an assault via the Pretty Valley Pondage via Tawonga Fire Trail was the best option as concerns were raised over the West Kiewa approach and likely fallen trees etc...

We got a fairly good window weather wise in which not too much rain fell between 3pm and 5pm to get in so we could spend the night there.:thumbs:

Water was running down the tracks and wet socks were ganna be a feature of the trip....:(:(:(

We cut all poles in wood shelter up and brought them inside...we split any baby logs that were around outside fire place and any wood that was left there..;);)

The wood stove Nectre was going from 5pm sat till we left at 3pm Sunday...:metun::metun::metun:

Note little splitter is stuffed:head comes off shaft..:confused::confused::confused:
30inch bush saw is functional and there is a spare blade there too

We left the usual candles, dunny rolls, fire lighters and matches...:p:p

Condition of hut is good....it needs new little splitter, dust pan & brush, broom (existing one has lost most of its handle)

my old kettle is still there with a few home made billies too...

tap connected via plastic pipe to creek is still operational...which is really good!!!

now overall wood supply is very good.....

on way out we cut a few trees off track and commences work on a large snow gun that had fallen over track but we were too stuffed(cold/wet) to complete job on this large diameter tree...it can be easily stepped over and all surrounding limbs have been cut away so ski tourers can easily get past...we had the fuel and gear but we wanted out of there!!!

good to get back to rodeo at Pondage.....mission successful............:p:p:p:p:p

seasons barriers are now locked on some access routes ...but access to the barrier on Stoneytops is good....did it in 2wd but with new maxxi(off rd tyres) on weekend...using left hand loop all is good not many obstacles to negotiate ....surface into Upper Stoneytops Campsite at barrier was slippery coming out...but no obstacles ...

surface of Stoneytops track is pretty good and as the name suggests there is plenty of rock in soil(looks like mud stone) to provide good traction...Bridge at Freeburg has been rebuilt so options are Germantown Bridge over Ovens or Freeburg Bridge a bit further on if coming from Bright..:thumbs:

Picnic Table no7 is set to roll of production line shortly and we hope to have this one installed at Camp Mulhauser shortly....anybody got any access reports for Mulhe....we have neglected works up there for quite a while but as West Kiewa is off line with Management Gate Closures we can now start to get some works done elsewhere...

hoping to get this one right into little saddle but recent snow fall may delay plans for a week or two...

Team ganna place this one to top corner in pic below..again out of way of floats,4x4,s tents etc...days of temporary tables are coming to an end....who knows maybe a second one could get approval by Team Bears Constructions over summer 2016/17...so on bush edge behind blue tent shown in previous pic.... we will also cut debri of walking track to Longspur Ridge if when we make it up there shortly....must be getting pretty agricultural up there unless some one else has been doing some track work too....god only knows what trees we will find strewn around at Camp Mulhe....:oops::oops:

    just back from mighty Mulhauser....

spent weekend on wipper snipping going some of the long grass.:D:D:D..3 tables established about 2months ago are all good...

walked Mulhuaser Foot track with chain saw and tidied up some fallen timber...o_Oo_Oo_O

put a few fluro markers on the track and on gate at top of track too:thumbs::thumbs::thumbs::thumbs:

walked towards Cleve Cole but only got about 2km and saw ran out of fuel...so we cut some debri on Long Spur but it would appear there is much still along there..

Long Spur very very overgrown with bushy:mad::mad::mad::mad:

plants above my head making headway slow..

Note our 4x4 is not operational so we did it easily in 2wd even up last hill into camp..
sprayed some blackberries too in campsite..
Logging Road in excellant condition cos they have been carting logs...
some debri on Mulhauser Track but only small poles and sticks...

remember once you are on Mulhauser Track go left at active logging coupe(road is rough here over surface drain) and then left at next intersection...via zig/zag and onto ridge proper....:p

in summary:Mulhuaser good access and campsite good and walking trail up to LongSpur(Mt.Mulhauser )also good....

very tired now 460 km drive from Melb via Wodonga and then Mitta Mitta and Omeo Highway...so day off drinking coffee and processing Melbs Crisis....:(:(

new hub installed in drivers front: so hopefully 4x4 capacity restored now...so will know shortly if its ok...???
hope to get back to Long Spur in next month or so and walk out to Bossiea Hill cutting fallen debri on route...but as Bears have said it needs men wielding brush cutters urgently before track dissappears.....

advising that the whole West Kiewa is open at moment ...West Kiewa Logging Rd open till Diamitina Horse Yards and Dungeys also providing good access too....Info via Mt Beauty Parks Staff...so for this weekend its all open then expect some more closures come monday....and then u need to make contact with Parks or DSE to ensure its open to Horseyards or not..

Blackberries experienced the full assault of the fire pump loaded with a blackberry treato_Oo_Oo_O....so looks like Bears are nearly finished for moment on Blackberry eradication works in areas limited to their campsites...so u will see fringe areas turn yellow over comming weeks ..well we hope....:eek::eek:

Bears got a sorte in on Stoneytops Approach and on walking track almost to Nth Peak...

From Stoneytops(Seasons barrier) its clear all the way to helipad...4x4 is necessary as there are more than 3 steep pitches on way in and out as track sits right up on the ridgeline..as one gets closer to National Park Boundary the track has foliage to drive thro past sides of vehicle...but surface is pretty good and a small area exists for carparking at the top(Old Helipad)

We quickly saw that Parks had been active with brushcutters on the first km, and there after chainsawing of all fallen debri over the track has been carried out by Parks....it was bloody hot last Monday as Bears did a little improvement on work already undertaken...we staggered up hill and were really knocked around by the heat..(40degC Albury/Wodonga that day...

We shot out to Diamintina Horse Yards over the weekend and cleaned up a hazardous:sleep: tree that had been pushed :sleep:towards the Concrete Bridge Campsite and had its head into our campsite area....

We did a day walk to Dibbins and Blairs and we took some photos of Red Robbin Battery(K.Harris's Dwelling)we will download to forum in comming days...

We observed the D6 has dozed all the way on the jeep track towards Dibbins...its like a mini fire break..
then the foot track to Dibbins has been very well prepared..and is free of all debri and provides a quick walking route to Dibbins Divide...

Dangerous tree removal also felled:tany: some trees over the foot track leading to Blairs form the high saddle on the road way but the debri has been chainsawed and moved aside..so all is good...

table 18 has just been completed in Melb and when we return it will go into a campsite well deserving :violin:of our efforts..again it will be positioned out of way of users pitching tents and parking traffic...we know it will be well received by campers ...
we will supply pics after installation has been completed...no tables exist in area at moment..but it is a popular campsite...

Diamintina Horse Yards now has a picnic table for all to use.;););)..which will be of benefit to walkers carrying limited gear...so they have some where to cook/eat relax after a slog of a day involving Diamintina Spur..:).

one and only one table has been placed by already established fire place and its little seats...pretty minimal visually but practical.....pics to follow later in week....took a bit of effort to level it(2 goes in fact) but its final establishment was very satisfactory by Team Bears standards...not to close to fire but close enough and as wind travels down valley at night mostly out of the path of any fire smoke,,,,:p:p:p:p:p:p

Bears say no permits required to use table ....but we expect users to show hospitality to all others around....

this should now complete our run out of Tables in the West Kiewa at last!!!!:cool::cool::cool:

this area is most definately in the ANP all other installations are outside its boundaries...so we hope that Parks Vic r not troubled by this minimal upgrade to this well loved area...table is strong and has no protruding screws etc to injure adventurous children....hopefully all goes well with this political aspect..and no body feels that their authority is undermined...

Team Bears just back from mission on Long Spur.. we came in from Camp Mulhauser still providing excellent access and camping.....it was very hot we became very tired but most fallen logs on or over track are removed :that is from 4x4 portion and over Mt Mulhuaser and on to base of Bossiea Hill...we called it quits at base of Bossiea Hill we were too stuffed to lug saw uphill...fortunately it is pretty open up there and the dozen or so obstacles can be easily navigated around...about 25pc of track is badly overgrown with shrub over the Bears heads....we did no brush cutting but if any body has time its something that needs to be done urgently..we encountered two different groups of trail riders(horses) and they came along after all our works were complete...a couple of areas are very confusing due to big falls of timber...some of these we skirted around keeping chainsawing to a practical minimum....in those areas we marked heavily with tape as the established track stops dead with a minefield of debri ahead...and our new track following line of least resistance takes off...

when time permits it would be possible to spend the couple of hours required to cut the track back to its original route thro these heavy fall areas...with these temporary plastic tape markers it would be hard to get lost at least and its much easier to follow the track even for veterans of the area...

the original Alpine Track Markers are very few along this route...some have been attached to trees now fallen over...

our recommendations are for immediate brush cutting thro here and for many more AWT markers to be put back in...

bare in mind there is no water along here till u climb over Bossiea Hill and descend along pole line to T.Spur junction.....Bears say u need to be carrying about 4 litres of water as a minumum along here on a hot summer day....fortunately there is some breeze and the tree canopy provides some shade too...if comming all the way from Mt Wills one must fill up with water at the last little creek crossed within 5mins after leaving the main forest road...:whistle::whistle::whistle::whistle:

fire danger is ramping up big time now in NE...keep upto date with radio broadcasts.:thumbs::thumbs:...and use commonsense to avoid getting caught out with no plan to shelter from wildfire...being next to a big river when camping is a sound idea.....some areas of AWT u dont want to be on if fires are burning or lightening strikes are likely...Melb has been very mild compared to the weather north of the divide.....please be safe and plan where u dont want to be on a total fire ban day in 40's with as strong northerly wind!!!o_Oo_Oo_Oo_O.

Oh success...now i will send them off to purchase some treated pine sleepers ..H4 50mm x200mm x 2,400mm. They sometimes get a little distracted when sent on errands and most probably will spend most of the arvo drinking cappuccinos in Lyon St <<
