Team Bears have acquired a mean looking blade for our "whipper snipper"well it's a straight shaft brush cutter of moderate output...we will road test this weekend ....hopefully it will lead us to cut faster....its carbide tungsten tipped.Bears upgrading their protective eyewear too.

Weather looks settled for awhile so we should make a dent in some of our projects.
We may spin it up in the back garden tonight to see it functions ok.

Hopefully Team Bears can get at Walking Trail between Mt Wills and the Big River Saddle over next month....firstly to check it out and then to get chainsaw along if and where required.
We did it last year before winter....but there are sure to be some trees across track.

Mr T and others have been providing very useful information on approaches ....we are appreciative of their posts.

    The disc blades are good.

Those 4point metal blades shake too much.

I just had a little test ...it's impressive..I was a bit dubious ...it is a lot heavier ...but no vibration set up.....cut thro dry(dead) woody shrub same diam as diam of my thumb in split sec with not much applied power.

I will give it a go this weekend ....better get much better eye protection I think.

Team Bears have new toy to try out in the field ...whoopee!
It's just like a Saw blade this thing....

Another half kilometre of scrub cut this arvo...the new disc with carbide tungsten tip is cutting very well.Well worth the $35 outlay..So camped at end of Longspur 4x4 track and cutting back towards main rd.
Chainsawed some minor debri on way in to keep debri away from Tyers .
It's a really nice Campsite up here.Moon is large and is almost horizontal to my eye.Off to sleep soon and some more track cut tomorrow till I get bored or tired.May get some pics tomorrow of some of the action involving Team Bears.Nice sitting by fire after lugging the brush cutter around!!

Weather stable a bit of cloud drifting between Team Bears and the big glowing disc in the sky.So we are making a dent in this project but it's more than laborious .

Bears have now cut 1.5 km from the end heading back to Big River Rd..We estimate another 1.5km. Needs to be cut with brush cutter.

On way out we were greeted with another large fallen tree. But end had fractured on outside of road and rest was virtually overhanging and not going to fall on roadway. It was not a pretty site....new chain went on but used old chain to level this spike inpaled in road surface..So a 4x4 can easily get along here...only middle section of this track needs more work. The change to a disc(similar to bench Saw)was a great success.:emoji_gear::emoji_gear:

Good through debris, no doubt. But would not a Weedwacker be faster through blackberry infestations ?

Some places ....possibly need poison spraying. But this is not on Team Bears agenda...just cut scrub well back from track so vehicles can use Track without getting the paint work ripped off.And perhaps a couple of areas to park or pass or turn around too!

Painfully slow progress continued on the 4x4 track....total now cleared is 2.5km.The blade is making this project possible. We need another 0.5km to finish this project. The dozer that was last here cleaned the first approx 3km very well (that is removed scrub on and beside Track)thereafter the dozer just pushed off rocks and fallen timber. So the last three kms was the bushy bit.....it's more under control now!!
The work of the D4 is much appreciated as the track surface is free of boulders and fallen timber. There are a couple of spots in the micro saddles that turning around is possible. When Team Bears have finished we will ensure that a couple of areas midway through can be little carparks or pull over areas.

Prognosis:a project that is not going to happen overnight!!But we had a good time at our little camp and had a nice fire after the small shower that past late Saturday arvo.

I am coming up to Mulhauser spur and Long spur on 10th of March, The Long weekend. I plan to drive from Melb. to Mitta Mitta in the morning( 5 hours drive), have lunch in Mitta Mitta and head up to Camp Mulhauser. I plan to have my chainsaw etc. with me by then. :)
I will report on Ubi. Steve's handiwork. I am going up to the Dargo High Plains this Monday . I will scout out the southern gate at Emu Plain and other areas before that from Dargo to Lankey Plains hut. They could well have BC XC ski applications.

You must keep your wheels in the wheel ruts as undergrowth cut to the side is a tyre hazard....don't pull over to let other vehicles pass unless you examine side of this track except in the grassy clearings .These photos taken in last 200m of this track.Had break fast so off to do some more touch up down track

Track surface is good and dry at moment. No rock or timber hazards.....low range 4x4needed for about four small pinches.Rodeo has ample clearance so good for all 4x4s.Chainsaw essential up here ...things keep falling down on Big River Log Rd...but mostly poles of small diameter.More photos later ..work to be done before lunch!

One "rest area"completed...thirsty work on a hot day!Access from Big River Rd is good...some sticks on Logging road but no major debri...Team Bears have cut some logs lying on this road over last few weeks and hazard reduced some poles poking out on to edge of this road.

Team Bears off topic alright....in fact off the road till mechanic replaces a front brake calipher...busted a pivot post in last couple of weeks most probably....nasty noise from passenger side while braking....poor old system has clocked well over 0ne million kilometres so it's life has expended ......busting to get back up bush over our two week holidays so we can get back on topic......we hate hanging around killing time in suburbia!!

It could be time to take out a loan and get a new 4WD, at least a 2nd hand one with low kms on the clock.I just drove from Melb. to Sale to Dargo to Lankey Plains hut on Monday. Yesterday We hiked down King Spur track and camped at Mayford on the Dargo river. It is a magnificent location. We hiked up Treasure spur /McMillan's walking track today , back to the car and drove back via Bright. I am clocking up some serious km.s on and off road in the RAV 4.

When I say "Off road" I mean on surfaces that have not been macadamized nor on some routes would they allow a conventional low slung 2 WD to get very far either. The Dargo High Plains road, the first 3 kms of King Spur track and the Howitt Plains road, The Moroka road etc. are the kinds of roads where if it rains a lot and you were driving a 2 WD city car , the going would be very slow and bumpy if not nearly impassable.
Even the last 100 M. up to the Tallangatta ski club hut gate is rough and iffy for a small 2 WD.
Taking a conventional 2 WD up to the seasonal closure gate on Stoney Tops track would be foolhardy but in the RAV4 it was fine including fording snowy creek.
I am not taking my RAV 4 up/down the steep section of King Spur track or other routes that remain infamous for 4 WD users subsequently requiring a recovery vehicle. The Blue Rag Range track is very rough with some very steep sections. I am pleased I walked it but no way would my RAV 4 even get past the first 500 M. of that track.

Winter access to Mayford would have to be on bc xc skis from Dinner plain ,along the seasonally closed fire trails until you hit the snow line on the upper Mayford spur fire trail. We could see that route going straight up the hill from the valley floor. It has a lot of timber blocking the way.Mcmillan's track from Mayford up to King spur track had a few logs across it but it was easy to follow but it was a tad steep.

Have you thought of crowdfunding? It will involve outing yourself, but I doubt many people who matter don't know who you are. A few strategic posts into 4WD and bushwalking fora and you never know what may happen.

Well it rained a bit overnight....plans for weekend were some what skewed because of windy wet weather. Some work done on Big River Helipad Campsite....returning to Melb today...Rodeo going well after mechanic took three days to track down a brake calipher for front left.Did a bit of whipper snipping on Vic Rds Rest Area about six kms out of Mitta on Omeo side..warm down here but was pretty full on overnight with continual rain for six hours up on ranges.Big River Rd to Big River Saddle good ,,came out via Snowy Log Rd which is good fir its entire length onto Omeo Highway

Came past Toms Hut,via Disappointment Spur and then Trappers Gap Rd ..been putting in some time around there this afternoon...brought out most rubbish, cleaned fire place, there was a pile of leaves on the corrugated iron roof So climbed off back of diesel and raked all this shit off the roof.Put wipper snipper around Hut to make a nice fire break too and raked debri away.
There is a lot of old metal bits and pieces around this hut it needs a good clean up by a dedicated group.I did what I could in the time I had.Team Bears swept Hut....there is a broom present. And we left some fire wood inside for next group.

A very nice area but very neglected Hut....some weather boards need repairing etc etc.

It has Concrete pebble floor and a descent open fire place .....it would be a haven on a wet day or evening.

The track down to the creek is overgrown....if Team Bears pass by again we will walk chainsaw down to the creek....making it a little easier to get water.I walked down after completing all works with a can of Melb Bitter but it's not clear at all.....it can be fixed within half an hour to make life easier. Its only a little creek down there but water quality looked ok.....there were cattle around the hut area too....it was nice to be in mixed sclerophyll forest for a change....there was lots of junk around.old camp chairs inner spring mattresses etc.as stated some nice folk may think of dropping past and tidying up further. Its a very pretty spot.....Flat and good for camping..

Well I thought that raking the leaves (there was a thick mat) off the roof, clearing guttering and putting in a mini wipper snipper fire trail were overkill after the inch of rain they recently received.....but after I saw the fire emergency warnings come out around Whitfield yesterday Team Bears believe it was not such a stupid idea.We were thinking that after our aborted efforts for Longspur due to the rain event that the fire season was all behind us for another twelve months....wrong....it's been dry for some time and the warm dry spell then continued where it left off. What preparation is good enough for private props. according to DSE and CFA is good enough for our public Huts!! Well at least we made an effort in this regard.o_O

I have my chainsaw and accessories now and I gave it a test start , full throttle and chain brake demo in the front yard today. It is working well .I might see Ubi . Steve there next weekend, the March Long weekend.

Overall Longspur and Mulhauser approaches (from Big River Rd and from Snowy Log Rd are good .Kicking back with a beer or two now.4G good with IPad up here!

Big River Rd has crews harvesting logs some 2km in from Omeo Highway. They were not working during this weekend but have Barrier operating while they are working ....which is probably during the week days.So there may be some hold up should you enter that way during a working day. Thus this road is in better condition than normal!Just watch the Log trucks should you be around during a working week.

Some more of Mulhauser Walking Track brush cut.....as of to date it's all been brush cut/chainsawed and is in excellent order.

Saw Mr T.in Camp Mulhe setting off for Maddison's Hut Ruin near T Spur Junction.

Some work done in Camp Mulhe too.

Access to Mulhe is A Ok....Mr T got a bit held up by fallen debri...but I am sure he will update us on this shortly.

Extremely dry long weekend ...and very warm up there.....

Saw Mr T return when I was brush cutting at top of the track....

Mr T tells of some fallen timber between Bossiea Hill to a point East where Team Bears have a table.....about the half way out from Mt Mulhauser to Bossiea Hill.

Apparently it was very busy at Cleve Cole and on Bogong Summit....special event being run!!
Nobody at Camp Mulhe very peaceful and relaxing.......

There was a tree fern that was part of co-lateral damage but Team Bears relocated it....gave it a quick water!

How many stubbies do the bears drink before they get frisky with the rubber duck?

I was up there at Camp Mulhauser , a regular haunt of Ubi. Steve.
Yes there was a log blocking the Mulh. track. My chainsaw bar got stuck in the log . It was a bit stressful but my friend was very helpful and we got the bar clear, cut the rest of the way clear and made it to Camp. Mulh. almost at the same time Ubi. Steve rocked up with the Team Bears mobile.
The weather was perfect all weekend. We went out Mt. Bogong summit west for Lunch as a day trip and avoided the crowds of people who were doing a fund raiser day walk up and down the Big Fella. Camping near T Spur / Long Spur junction also helped keep the multitudes at bay .
The Long spur track is overgrown in places from Mulhauser spur track junction to Bosseide Hill. Steve has done what he can but the Bears can't do it all .
Sections of Long Spur are slow going with head high scrub and fallen logs that need a chainsaw. I am not going out there in XC ski season with the track like that. It would be a PITA with skis strapped to your pack pushing through snow laden scrub and squeezing under and over fallen trees.
A full B.C trip report with photos will follow soon.

I reckon those tables could be quite uncomfortable. Have you thought of a gap - mebbe 10 cm - between the table leg and the seat.?
