Sunroute Plaza Shinjuku. Queen or twin room. Close to station, shopping and restaurants. Probably a bit cheaper than the Hotel Century that blutek mentioned. Depends what you want. It looks a bit more upmarket than the Sunroute.

That's a shame - never had breakfast there. Took it for granted it would be okay.

Should really be quoting prices more in JPY - they tend to be pretty stable. Prices in AUD are much more variable with the fluctuating exchange rate. $250 now gets you less that that amount a year ago and who knows what it will be worth in a years time.

I am torn where to spend the money though...

I have just realised I can use it to buy the accom for Niseko (if we go there) so discount our weeks stay by $500.

Or Tokyo, where I was thinking of Air BNBing it.

Its essentially free money that I want to use wisely.

I don't think using it to go on another holiday is using it wisely.

ie I want it to make our holiday $500 cheaper. not necessarily upgrade our holiday by $500. therefore not saving money.

    Just my opinion.
Tokyo hotels don't offer very good value for money. Much like sydney hotels for that matter.
They seem to all follow a very similar outdated American theme. Then minitarised.
Whereas you go places like KL or Bangkok and you can really get a Hotel experience. Las Vegas style

Thanks - just wanted to say today comment wasn't in reference to yesterday's comment. It was a follow up with me saying I don't know how to use it. Niseko (or another resort we may decide to go to) or Tokyo acct which we could get for cheap...

I've stayed there a few times. Cheap, convenient and close to Ueno station which makes it ideal for the early morning Shinkansen getaway. Rooms are small but modern fit out. My only gripe is that it's adjacent to the expressway, so can be noisy. Ask for a room high up or bring ear plugs.

    Only just saw this.

I am starting to agree with you (not that I ever really disagreed!)

Which is why I am weighing up where to spend the free money.

I think I have to wait till at least 3mths out and see what we can get on webjet in Niseko (if we decide to actually go to Niseko - @Lady Mamabear hopefully you will have decided if you are coming or not by then!) and they weigh up our options against Tokyo options.

It's less about me, and more about the other family members.
Just waiting on a couple of dates - being an Olympic year it throws the NWPL season out - dates are not out yet. If the one week we want to be there clashes with the one week off the offspring has between NWPL and Uni that he wanted to do his first ever mates trip in I'd never be forgiven.
I'm expecting we will have our week, just need to get the ducks lined up.

FWIW, I agree about accommodation in Tokyo.
It's a must do adventure. Tokyo is great. But the accommodation value is not there.

Have a look at the prices, but it starts around 20,000yen+ per person per night.

Agree. If you want to spend that sort of money on accommodation, much better to spend it on a really nice traditional Ryokan with meals and onsen than at a hotel.

Or just haul your gear to a Karaoke, and stay there for the night!!!! ;) It's only around 3000yen between 11pm - 5am at Big Echo!!! :D

Personally I fhink that would be a waste.of a good ryokan sara. In late out early you're better off at a low cost hotel.

Yes, but Ryokans normally serve dinners at 6pm or 6:30pm unless you can organise otherwise. And the excellent dinners served in your room as well as an onsen are a big part of the appeal of Ryokans. So for a late airport arrival / early train departure I agree a low cost business hotel and a bento is a much better option.

For a Ryokan you need to have the time to be able to savour the experience.

So you did! Even then it's orobably a little late getting in. Without trying to sound too wanky the whole ryokan experience is not supposed to be rushed, but savoured.

Thanks, but no. Spending the night in Tokyo, waiting for the rest of the group. Getting the night bus, arriving late and exhausted, sleep late anyhow. Or getting a night of good sleep in Tokyo, taking Shinkanzen early in the morning and be in Myoko after midday: still the same deal to me :)
