    Hello everyone,

My name is Kyle and I am a major weather nut. My weather passion started at a young age and has grown ever since, especially after high school. I am currently studying to work in the BoM as a forecaster, then later on to be a weather station techician.
I am also a keen storm chaser when SA does get thunderstorms, and if I am free to chase. My nickname suits me well with my photography for thunderstorms, particularly lightning.

I own a profressional graded weather stations with a Davis Pro 2 Plus being my home station which has been up and running since August 2012, another two Davis stations are for field work.

Welcome Kyle! You bring a wealth of knowledge. I am a mere layperson when it comes to weather, but I look forward to more weather discussion and banter about my little city and amazing state

The hills get a lot more rain due to orographic lifting, rain
I’ve noticed the coastal areas tend to get less rain than the city areas but all depends on the systems that’s causing the rain. A typical rainband it’ll be within reason but with showers, it depends on the angle of the SW flow

Ah well I see some states are on the subtropics marine and some are on alpine and southern. They should all be on the same section I would think for simplicity and ease of finding anyway!

Had a slightly disappointing 4.0mm until 8am yesterday morning followed up by a further 1.7mm of drizzly crap yesterday.

We'll see how much of the predicted 4-10mm of rain predicted for today will end up in the gauge :)

Good to see you posting again Ian.

1.4mm to 9am yest and 5.6mm to 9am today, not too bad, drying SW flow now before turns back more WSW and moistens again tonight and tomorrow for more orographic fun.

yes, I think you are right Berga, while SA thread on there is good, and many good folk on there....but, after only just looking at the off language, etc on the overseas threads, it is not my "cup of tea" at all. Think I will post here. I just wish all the states weather here had sticky threads instead of moving down all the time in the queue

looks like reasonably good fronts this coming weekend and into early next week, and a weaker westerly one this mid-week.
but in longer term for Spring this would have to be one of the worst Cold Ocean around Australia SST charts I have seen, for rain anyway I mean!

I take it that all that cold water off the Indian Ocean translates into a +ve IOD = less rainfall for southern Australia?

Looks good for a decent couple of frontal systems this coming late saturday to friday with plenty of southern and central settled areas decent showers and winds. And plenty of hills rains, showers and drizzle and low cloud

managed to wring 1.8mm out of the gauge this morning. The sand dunes at Henley/Grange don't produce as much orographic lift as the Adelaide Hills!

Rainfall to date for July at home = 0.3+7.5+.3+.5+4+1.7+5.4+2.3+2.7+2.5+1.6+1.8 = 30.6mm.

Had 8 rain/drizzle consecutive days, probably the most consecutive days for a few years.

Another 0.3mm, but more from a heavy dew last night I suspect as most plants in the garden had moisture which looked more like from dew than rain. Temp at 8am was 5.5C which was the overnight minimum. Sky was clear with the moon visible in the west.

whats noticeable with these systems coming through is the lack of
any grunt to the polar pulse.
whilst w.a. is getting a good seasonal spanking of stand up fronts
the ones coming through here are for want of a better word.....
lethargic. we either get a glancing blow or if anything does come up
it t-bones vic and we get clipped by the back edge of the coldpool.
also more disturbingly noticable is the lack of pre frontal moisture
associated with this upcoming set of fronts/coldpools. little or no
post coastal penetration and what does get through is sparse to
say the least. the only legacy left behind by this next lot of fronts
will be some bone snapping frosts as the next high and fine set
moves in, hopefully it wont occur later on down the track and end
up the disaster it was last year.

Yer, TH the NW Cloud-band is pretty cactus because of the cold water up there in the NW... and the warm water
off the east coast and New Zealand is encouraging a block situation with high to south and lows cut-off to north often steering fronts away to SE around block and shearing a little to the north only across NSW where they get a bit of rain near the coast where moisture is often.
Looks poor for Spring with all that cold water around most of Australia and a positive dipole imo. Feel for those up north further inland, at least we get a few showers from the southern ocean and bight area.
Good to see you here anyway TH

yer thanks BD, i wasn't going to bother but then i thought.......
    what the hell....you're here.;)
bin a bit windy today, something like this in 6 months time and
we will be in seriously deep manure.
front is approaching, gradient closing, there's even a smidgen
of nw pre frontal cloudband, not exactly dripping with moisture.
might gat a bit of a dribble from it, but then again it might just
    be me posting here.

Good TH, that means me and Werner can talk to someone else now!
Hopefully a few more may get on board when we have a decent weather system.
The one on Tuesday/ Wednesday looks more decent and will at least have a bit more bight and southern ocean moisture with it. Then on Thursday/ Friday another one bit less but still at least a bit of moisture with it.
But yer, not much in this first one a windy woof and a dribble or two as you say by the looks!
