I'm keeping a close eye on Marree. It has records going back to 1885. December record there is 49.0 on 22nd Dec 1972. Airport AWS is a few km away and has got to 46.1c so far today.
For a station with a long history, Parafield in the northern Adelaide suburbs has totally obliterated its previous December record with 46C
Didn’t make it to the big 50 under the back veranda today. Might have lost a rose or two, they look toasted.
Did see 50 on the way home, 55.5 actually but I was driving so no pic. I was parked at the traffic lights to take this pic.
Worst day in Adelaide for a long, long time. Absolutely brutal overnight and of course now we have the fires Looking out the office window earlier it looked very hazy but once I got outside I couldn’t really smell smoke so I guess it’s mostly dust. Waiting for my tram at Victoria Square was just about the hottest I’ve ever been.
The wind change came thru as I pulled into the drive. Saw 55 in the car in the way home and then 37 in the drive. Not as hot under the back veranda as yesterday.
There have been some crazy records broken in the last few days but I just noticed Keith 48.4 today beats its 115 yo record by over 4C, wow.
42 under the back veranda yesterday, a bit more than forecast. With no sea breeze or any convection air movement until late evening we felt every bit of the heat. Warm today but sea / river breezes are moving around early, nice.
Yeah, yesterday was foul. Bit worried about the forecast for Monday with heat, wind and possible lightning. Then apparently back up to 38 by next Friday I’m finding the constant heat really physically and mentally draining. Thank god for my job being in air conditioned comfort.
Quite pleasant on the coast, temps dropped quickly as we approached due to influence of southerly breeze
It’s a max min thermometer. The blue part is pushed to the max temp on the right & the min temp on the left. As the temp changes it leaves the blue pin behind. So the bottom of the right hand blue pin is the max temp since last reset which was yesterday evening. Likewise the min temp on the left except it’s the top of the pin that is the read point. The big cream button in the middle is the reset button, it moves a magnet I think. It’s all pretty manual/old school. Does that help?
Sorry, correction, the bottom of the left blue rod is the min reading not the top. I don’t often look at it and got mixed up while finger typing on the phone.
So a total of 297.75 mls of rain for 2019, a whisker short of our average if you use BOM Adelaide Airport for the average.
For some reason I thought the ADL Airport average rainfall was about 300 but it’s actually (mean rainfall rather than average) 439, so we are well short this year. http://www.bom.gov.au/climate/averages/tables/cw_023034.shtml
It turns out my data very roughly matches BOM for Adelaide in a very broad and general way. From abc Adelaide records 170mm less rain than average during dry 2019 http://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-01-01/adelaide-records-driest-year-in-more-than-a-decade/11835178
It's dry when we measure in 0.05mm increments. We swapped over from paper records to an iPad app some years ago
I did swear at the iPad after an upgrade and it lost everything. Took a while to figure out how to retrieve the cloud backup
Quite pleasant so far today, currently 33 deg, slightly overcast and hazy. Feels as if humidity is low and winds are of the gentle breeze variety from the north.
