Keith, in the SE of South Australia, about half way between Adelaide and Mt Gambier, has had an interesting year for temperatures. It had its hottest temperature on record last December 20 (49.2°C / 120.6°F) and its coldest temperature on record this morning (-4.7°C / 23.5°F). That’s quite a big range for Australia. This was at the Munkora site with only 20 years of records, but both records eclipse those at the nearby Keith town site, which has records since 1947.
Well there’s possibly snow up North, Mt Remarkable and Melrose are usual suspects, tho not specifically mentioned by abc here. SA town shivers through its lowest temperature on record, possible snow forecast http://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-08-05/sa-town-shivers-through-lowest-temperature-on-record/12525800
Woomera might be on track for it's coldest day on record (since 1949 anyway). Max temp so far of 8.2c. Previous record is 8.3c in Sept 1956...
HOw awesome. I would have loved to have seen that and done some hiking around there. I had my first visit to the Flinders Ranges last year and it was awesome.
Man I just saw some awesome snow photos on the news from around there. It looks like some very decent stuff fell.
I'm on Mount Lofty(Adelaide) which is 500km south of the Flinders ranges where the snow photos were taken. No luck yet down here
It’s too warm & too wet. But not wet enough to turn off the irrigation. North East systems are usually pretty useless in my experience.
0.6mm + 7.8mm for the last 2 days. Very strong gust of wind + rain(?) around 930pm last night lasting about a minute or so.
'We're under attack': Tornado confirmed as cause of damage to Adelaide suburb http://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-08-19/suspected-tornado-through-morphett-vale/12572736
Another 1.6 + 5.1mm has increased the system total to 15.1mm as at 7:40am this morning. Very heavy shower at 6:35am today, unsure if there was any hail with it though.
Another 5.4 + 0.2mm brings the system total to 20.7mm. Looks like the end of August may be on the drier side with some Spring like conditions. Hoping that this spring with perhaps more moisture available + heat will generate some thunderstorms to chase, preferably on weekends
1mm in the Exeter gauge this am, 7mm yesterday am. Very drying winds, 20mm deep puddles onsite (construction) were drying out yesterday.
Perhaps you South Oz crew would be interested in this, given it's the data of your WX forefathers: https://www.ski.com.au/xf/threads/c...scribe-australias-oldest-meteo-records.88370/
Another 0.3mm to finish off August with a total of 34.6mm (cf Adel Airport 32.8mm = 50.8% avg). For Sep, I've measured 0.6+0.1+0.3+9.4+0.3 = 10.7 with YTD 309.4mm. Hoping to get a reasonable top up over the next 7 days, will have to wait & see. I see tomorrow's rainfall range has had a downgrade from 6-15mm to 2-6mm, but Saturday's has increased to 6-15mm at this stage. I guess it's all dependent on the path of the low, so may change yet again.
I'll see your nuffin Skifree & double it! Big fail for Adelaide region yesterday, but sort of made up for it about an hour ago with winds, interesting swirling clouds, a rumblefest to my north and a short sharp medium shower followed by a rainbow At least the northern areas got some much needed rainfall. Not sure whether anything registered in the gauge, will check it tomorrow morning.
Well BOM issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning pretty much as the first lightning hit nearby & rain drops started to fall, good one BOM. Not much in it for us, I’ll only get to put a T for Trace on the rainchart tomoroz morning.
Another 9.0mm on Tuesday morning plus 4.7mm this morning brings the last 3 days to 15.0mm and the MTD for September to 25.7mm cf 18.0 at the airport & YTD = 324.4mm at home vs 279.4 at the airport. Pity the possible snow flurries on the higher peaks of Flinders & Mt Lofty Ranges are on Fri morning instead of Sat morning = no snow chasing However "possible storm" is in Thu & Fri forecasts. We'll see how possible it turns out!
10 & 1/2mm in the Exeter gauge this morning. A bit breezy, cancelled my 100T crane and lifting for the day.
I had a good a light snow shower, then some snot balls, then a heavier snow shower on Mount lofty just after 6.45am. Then had to go to work when it was still snowing!!
Friday morning I tipped out another 7.3mm, Sat morning 4.0mm & Sun morning 0.4mm giving a total of 29.7 which includes the squall lime from Sun evening. Rainfall is usually recorded around 7:30am on weekdays & around 9am on weekends. Sep total is now sitting on 40.4mm vs YPAD on 27.6mm. YTD is 339.1mm vs YPAD = 289.0mm. One last chance to top up September's totals on Tue according to BOM. Would have been nice to have gone snowchasing on Fri morning in the Mid North, but work intervened
Another 13.4mm from yesterday's soaking rain is keeping the garden happy Looks like October could be off to a good start on Sunday if you happen to be in the firing line of that predicted rainband.
12 & 1/2 in the Exeter gauge this morning. And started raining again just as the 100ton crane was leaving site.
Good timing re the crane leaving! We had a heavy downpour at Kilburn at around 4pm followed by a lesser heavy shower around 530ish this afternoon. The rain had that tropical source feeling i.e. largish drops and the sky was looking quite interesting with banks of clouds looking like moving more or less from west to east rather than from the NW or SW, although the shower at 4pm was coming in from the SW according to the radar.
