So I’m getting married later this year, but I really want to do engagement photos in the snow. I have a Thredbo season pass so it’s easy for me, but my partner doesn’t and I’m guessing neither does the photographer. Does anyone know if scenic tickets are still sold for the kosci chair in winter? Or are there any other pretty snowy areas you would recommend, I was thinking of Dead Horse Gap though I’ve never actually driven up that far (will probably go scope it out in winter, but I am impatient and would like to know my options earlier than then!). Also in my search of the threads regarding the scenic chair and backcountry access, it seems that driving to Guthega might also be an option? I live semi-locally and will be getting my hair done in Jindabyne, and I have an AWD and annual national parks pass so happy to drive anywhere really, though thredbo has a special spot in my heart for a number of reasons. Thanks all!
Friend of mine got pics done - full wedding party at the top of Kosi express. Full winter snow (was mid august) Scenic passes were purchased. No issue there. Biggest issue was footwear .
I know they do the passes for wedding parties, I’ve seen photos and I’m obsessed with them But I I was just worried that they might not do those passes for walk-ins like a random engagement shoot, since the website only shows Merrits scenic lift passes. I guess I should just ask thredbo customer service though some of the posts on this forum indicate that the front line staff don’t always know all of the available options necessarily...
And no chairlift would be required then either! Maybe I will go for a tourist drive and check it out on opening weekend since lifts at Thredbo are unlikely to be spinning then and I can get my snow fix one way or another
From the top of Kosi chair the background is meh. Guthega background much better ie mountains. Top of chair at Charlotte Pass just stunning. DHG good for big Snowgums but no background vista
DHG would be great for a dirty big blizzard picture. Yup drive to Guthega. Pics. Head down to the Guthega pub for a drink on the "deck" Ask for Nick. Makes the best chips in the mountains.
N Nope never. I’ve only ever been as far as Thredbo on alpine way, and then I’ve driven to Perisher but never that other link road to Guthega which I’m assuming is how you get there by car. I’ve never even been there at all since the few times I’ve been to Perisher it was late spring so most of the resort was closed
If you’re wanting to get foot passenger tickets for Kosi Express in mid winter just be aware that they have been known to refuse foot traffic when it’s busy. However friends opening weekend wedding photos were amazing. Well worth the logistical tap dance.
Pretty sure the Canberra crew will fix this, this year. I hate to say it but if you want the main range in the back ground, charlottes or Guthega would be the go. I’m not so sure a ride to the top on a windy day would be the perfect option just after paying the hairdresser to do your hair. Seriously though if Thredbo is your happy place get pics at Dead horse in the snow gums and a quick walk out of top station will get you reasonable mtn backdrops. If you post some of the pics you want to replicate (or bring them to the next drinks get together) I’m sure we can work out where they were taken and how hard it would be to get there.
Loving all these ideas, thank you! I’ll have to put some thought into bad weather contingencies and see how flexible the photographer is with lead-times and weekdays etc Sounds like music to my ears!
Couple of views from Guthega, no lifts required: Hard part is going to be getting photo-worthy weather IMO.
I mean I don’t hate the idea of photos of me in a dress and on a snowboard but forking out for 2x day lift passes for the other two is probably out of the budget
Not being a biased AF perisher bloke. . Guthega is the spot. Top of thredbo is a windblown pancake. Looking down the valley wacks out most photos IMO. MR from Guthega is so easy.
Wow that’s amaaaaaaaazing! And it makes me want winter to come faster Yeah the weather will be weather, that’s part of why I decided against getting my heart set on wedding photos in the snow because I know how unpredictable it can be
Ahhh thank you but I already have a photographer! Going with the same one as for the wedding, so I can try be less nervous on the actual day since I can be quite shy
The scenic tickets on Kosci are around $25 each if I recall There are some times when the chair is really busy that they dont luke doing foot passengers because they have to skow the chair down at bottom and top and interrupts the flow. However I’m sure a conversation with management beforehand will get thinks sorted And stick with Thredbo, where your heart is
Why not skitube to Blue Cow. Couple hundred metre walk to the lookout from there. Much easier to get to than the top of Guthega.
Randy may have exclusive commercial rights within the resort area. Commercial photographers require a permit to shoot in national parks. The permit is quite cheap. The compulsory insurance is extortionate.
Looks like small scale stuff including still photographs is free to register. So I’d say my photographer has it. https://engage.environment.nsw.gov.au/small-scale-filming-and-photography-form
Saw this lot at Merritts last year, in the middle of a full-on blizzard. I think the guests all stayed inside. Top of Kosci would have been very interesting that day (in fact, I think Kosci might have been on windhold).
Photographer should be anle to “shop” tracks out if they aren’t too prolific. I got rid of a whole road just using MS Paint
WOuld have got my yellow snow marks in the background at that angle. I love that gum back there. Would have been compulsory glasses the stop someone having their eye poked out by all the nipples.
It's quicker, easier and cheaper to avoid crap that you have to photoshop out - particularly if doing a bunch of photos like weddings and engagements. Go up to Dead Horse Gap, or any the convenient stopping places on the road to Perisher not long after a snow fall and you'll find hundreds of foot prints all over the place.
