ACCC reports on profits made by Australian airports out or parking.
Who here contributes to their profits? Short-term parking to pick someone up or drop them off, you may not have much of a choice. But who on earth parks in long-term parking? I tend to park at one the off airport places (I use Ace) and avail myself of the shuttle bus. You'd have to be crazy to pay their rip-off rates.

I'll bite! I use the parking at the international terminal when we travel with the kids.

There are pretty substantial discounts for pre-booking, and in the context of an expensive overseas holiday, the extra $100-$200 or so isnt a huge factor.

It's more convenient getting to the airport, but I find the biggest benefit is on the way home ... kids, bags, etc can all be whisked straight into the car with minimal fuss.

Every time we've done it, Mr Bird and I congratulate ourselves on the sensible decision to cough up the funds to make the last part of our journey a bit more bearable!

Must be better at Sydney than Melbourne then! Still need to catch a shuttle bus to the long-term carpark which takes you through up to 12 different stop points in the massive car park, where finding your car is liking finding a needle in a haystack. Unless you choose their valet parking. Never done that, so can't really comment.

Ditto. I use Busy Beaver. Otherwise when I'm doing drop offs or pick ups for others it doesn't cost anything - just gotta get the timing right. Occasionally I've had to duck off the Tulla freeway and pull into McD's carpark there on Mickleham road to kill some time.

You're not doing it properly then. You're meant to be in a blind panic and running late for every flight you ever take, falling into your plane seat puffing and panting and relieved to have made it. ;)

Must be. Parking at the International terminal is a walk to the lift, across an airbridge and you're in the terminal. If you book in advance it can be just a little more than the off site parking and it's so nice to get straight into the car after an overnight flight!

If you buy tickets early you can stay in the multi storey carpark directly opposite the terminals, walk over the airbridge....$215 for 2 weeks

Interestingly, I was reading in the Royal Auto magazine yesterday about a $1.5 billion proposal for light rail to Tullamarine which is being pushed strongly. Apparently tickets would be $25 one way. Southern Cross is the obvious entrance into the city.

That'll cost multiple billions, apparently. And will need quite a bit of land

No doubt. Just seems amazing that it was built without rail in the first place given the location. Cab company's windfall over many decades. Transport integration seems like a no brainer in hindsight.

Sydney, unfortunately, seems to be going down the same drain with Badgerys Creek. Why anyone would consider building an airport without a rail connection to anywhere, let alone the city's major airport, is a spectacular example of brainlessness.

It should be a mandatory design principle for airports ie get people in and out with mass transport options of rail, bus, taxi, ridesharing and private cars... rails to and from CBD/Airport is just so fundamental.... might take a decade to wash its face but once in will service society for generations. ...

Victoria's and probably Australia's last visionary statesman, Henry Bolte, love him or hate him, envisioned the airport in the early 1960s with a rail link from Jacana. He was the man who was responsible for the relocation of the airport, the freeway network, and so many other things we now take for granted. If he could see the need over 50 years ago, what's wrong with the current lot?

because Sydney Airport Inc has first refusal on anything to do with the new airport, there's a perverse incentive to do as little as possible to make it viable

Canberra airport is pretty reasonable. I don't think there are any off site parking facilities and taxis and a bit hard to find, especially with ski bags! I like not having to muck around after a long haul flight, it's worth that extra bit.

There's not much point building rail if it's going to be $25 each way

Same reason I've never caught the train to or from Sydney or Brisbane airport

We use Sydney airport parking all the time. $200 for 2-4 weeks I think last tine we booked, and parked almost to the closest park to the aero bridge. Definitely a winner on the return leg after an overnight flight. The drive home is already just over 2 hours. Plenty of people from the Hunter look at one way hire cars, but with ski gear and kids, it's BYO all the way.

Train works for one person. Is marginal for 2, and uneconomic for 3+.

Yeah marginal on price for two but much less convenient on the train

Airports want the train the be expensive because they make most of their money on car parking

Government should build the train and it should be $2 one way

    I agree with this.

We have been badly served by privatising a monopoly. What did they think would happen? That the Macquarie Sweetness and Light Philanthropic Society would do their bit for the common weal?

Sydney Airport to Central is $4.

Plus an Airport gate fee of $13.

I can see a new App in the making:- Long term parking at private residences. Pick up and drop off included, no regulations or pesky government compliance issues to worry about, no GST to pay. Now, where was that number for those App Developers in Mumbai . . . . .

Have used the Airtrain at Brisbane a lot when travelling for business. Stay at the Sofitel and the train unloads you right underneath...check in and a 5 min walk to the office in Adelaide St ✔ works for me given that convenience... for Sydney I normally cab as we live in Kingsford and are pretty close (still 30 bucks or so). Have caught the train though from work in St Leonards with a change at Central I think?... really easy and given Sydney traffic generally and traffic around the airport which can be a total clusterf@#k it is a good bet if time pressed.... OpalCard helps now too for convenience.....
Melbourne could really do with fast airport CBD rail built by government and make it cheap so people pile on! Get as many cars and cabs off the road and the whole mix will work better...

I have used long term parking travelling from the sunshine coast to brisbane for holidays. Works out cheaper to drive and park rather than pay for a shuttle if you are a family.

Whatever, the parking fees are way out of control, especially at Tullamarine where the land value is lower given its distance from the city and not in a prime residential area. Especially when the land was originally purchased. Residential development only followed the freeway that was constructed for airport access.

Last time I caught a cab from Lane Cove to the airport was about $70. Return about $140. Had ski gear, so needed a station wagon.

Parking with advance purchase last ski trip was about $200. So it depends on whether, for me, getting out of the airport into my car and driving home is worth $60. The further away from the airport you are the more the equation shifts.

I use it all the time in Brisbane on business trips (work pays and if I am getting 5am flights, I'm not stuffing around with offsite).

I also use it on weekends away, as with a coupon code (always posted on their Facebook page), they are only slightly more (like $5) than offshore for weekends.

Although I might start using the Virgin Valet service.

Use it all the time. I live ~130km away.

2 weeks parking, booked in advance:
$95 for the long term carpark (+ 5 -10 min free shuttle bus) = $6.79/day
$185 for the undercover carpark at the terminal = $13.20/day

Seems pretty fair and reasonable to me

When I was in Sydney, whenever I flew light and felt like exercising, I usually took the train from CBD to Mascot Station (which cost only $5 instead of $18) then walked the last bit (1.2km) which was an easy walk for me unless it was too hot. Most of the times I flew early so that wasn't a problem.

Melbourne needs a train from the city to the airport. The same train ride in Sydney is 10-15 minutes and never get held up by traffic.

Literally the only thing I remember my parents talking about Henry Bolte was the fact he hung Ronald Ryan.
    That seems pretty unvisionary
