Mud & Snow Slide
where? vic side of Thredbo?
I think this is in
- Alpine way thread
- Perisher thread
More the merrier.
Word on the street (or is that way) is that it will open to one lane in 24-48 hours
Two lanes by the end of the week
apparently between khancoban & tom groggin. so not going to affect sydneysiders going to Thredbo or Perisher
No. Just Victorians heading to Perisher from Falls/Hotham
* its a plan I tell you
at the last SIC at Tbredbo, the alpine way was closed. we drove there via tumut and home via Elliott way.
Every year around this time road autocloses around there
We were caught in Tbo one year after a slide closed the Alpine Way for a week, 6 years ago. Had to drive home through Gippsland, hungover to the eyeballs (I wasn't actually driving). WORST. TRIP. EVER.
I always think about the road as we're driving through, but there's nothing you can actually do about it. Just hope for the best.
Stopping Victorians adding to Thredbo's parking woes ;-)
Lucky we escaped NSW yesterday. There were no indicators of potential slide on this section of the road. There was quite a bit of traffic, more than normal heading to NSW.
@LaNeige is there a plan B?
There's always a plan B!
Up the Hume then Snowy Mountains Highway
Out east and via the Monaro Highway and Snowy River Way
Steal a TBM and tunnel my through, although the bloody things don't move that fast
Both Plan B and C add a couple of hours though
Takes me the same time to Melbourne...
* I may speed a bit via Gippsland
First ban the tobogganers. Tick
Then ban Victorians. Tick
Which group will they ban next?
Do you have a good list? Given parking and traffic, I’m keen to explore our options.
Telemarkers, smelly, unshaven hippies and POFO’s and their sprogs.
Ban both ends of the socioeconomic spectrum.
That Melbourne Canberra flight must be starting to look good.
I was thinking only the other day if we could filter the alpine skiers and stand up tobogganers off the resort it’d be a real nice place.
@Untele-whippet, liked? Um ...
Expected to open Friday afternoon
Yeah but I untele.
It’s a subtle distinction.
Now saying one lane open by Monday afternoon.
Like the post, do not like the information ...
Bloody snow players! That will kill ALDI though. They are frikken bussing them in now.
Further to my earlier questions re driving sMelbourne to Bullocks Flat this weekend and with the Alpine Way still closed I need some sage advice please. Our accom in Corryong have graciously refunded the fee and have been super upfront and helpful - kudos.
I've got two options (I think):
1. Drive to Tumut on Saturday and spend the night there, and on to Bullocks on Sunday morning
2. Drive to Bombala via East Gippsland, spend the night there and then on to Bullocks
In total both drives take about the same time so that evens out. I've never been to either Tumut or Bombala so happy to visit either, however i'm not sure about the road from Tumut (B72) across the mountains. I'd like to see that scenery if it's worthwhile.
Any response greatly appreciated as I need to hustle and book accom.
Do Tumut, and buy a broom!
No time for riddles. what do I need to sweep away?
They have a broom factory there, they make excellent brooms.
This ain't happening quickly
Nice enough drive too, maybe nicer than from Bombala.
ooh, regional industry. I need a new broom for our deck. Choice is made. Thanks
And apples. Well Batlow anyway.
Mmmmm apple pulp.
I have the same dilemma but will be leaving Tuesday night and looking to stop around half way before completing final leg in the morning to Perisher. Was considering the Orbost route. If you chose the Tumut route interested to get some feedback how you went with time and road conditions. Cheers
I think I'd do Hume - Albury, Adelong, Adaminaby, Berridale etc. Depends on where in Melbourne you're leaving from. To me, this option (from inner city) was way more preferable to going via Gippsland (from Thredbo to inner city). And Tumut is a nice drive but I'd personally go the other way.
Dont forget the Barry Way. Very direct & spectacular but need confident passengers through the gorge. ( ;-)
Do forget the Barry Way if you are trying to get anywhere as quickly as possible.
Has anyone taken Hume Highway to Little Billabong.....then Tumbarumra .....Elliot Way ...Kiandra....Adaminabye etc etc.
Got this tip on other feed
I always try and return this way but camp down on the Snowy, so extra day required. Last time it rained heavily overnight and I couldn't believe how slippery the road surface became, even in 4WD it required considerable concentration to stay on the road. Certainly wasn't a quick trip but wow, the area is even more beautiful after a good soaking.
One year when we went from a Jindy to Buller we went this way, though can’t remember where from Tumba. Came back through Tumut. While the road to Tumba was really pretty, it was very windy and took much more concentration than the SM hiway. Plus kid feeling nauseous in the back seat...
Thanks, I considered that and would've done it if on my own. Maybe next time.
My dad drove it last month and said that while spectacular it was pretty sketchy in the wet. There was a thin layer of wet dust / mud above the surface and it was conducive to relaxed driving.
