Some photos from the SM hiway taken last year, when I travelled it fairly frequently
The Barry Way, one of life's great adventures
Probably easier to go via tumut, but this is certainly feasible. A few years ago we had to go to thredbo when the alpine way was closed. Went there via tumut, back via elliot way.
I was going to recommend the motel we've stayed in a few times in Tumut but it's changed names and presumably owners so may have changed. Now called Harriet House
Currently in Tumut (from Melb) road wise nothing to report so far, all good. Left at 4pm and arrived at 10 with a half hour stop. There was a bit of traffic out of Melb as you'd expect.
The fun bit is in the morning, will report back then. Staying at the Tumut Valley Hotel, which is absolutely fine for a nights rest.
Long & slow, and currently may have sketchy ice patches and windblown - either chains or engaged 4X4, slow speeds & chunky tyres.
OK then Tumut to Thredbo leaving at 6am arrived 9am, great drive, beautiful sunrise / moon set, loads of snowy views from the Cumberland Ranges on. Good road, definately recommend at the minute. But do becareful of them critters.
And it looked like this
Told ya it was pretty
I reckon the Snowy Mts Hwy from Yarrangobilly/Sawyers Hill to the Monaro Hwy is one of the funnest drives around.
Latest update from online app. Good effort if they get it done.
The road is expected to open around the middle of the day on Monday 19 August 2019.
KHANCOBAN TO TOM GROGGIN: Alpine Way is now open after the earlier land slip.
Amazing work getting it cleared. Just in time for my trip up tomorrow night.

ROAD CLOSURE - ALPINE WAY - Thursday 3 & Friday 4 OCTOBER
The NSW Government is carrying out essential maintenance work to improve safety and road conditions for road users. A 22-kilometre section of Alpine Way in Kosciuszko National Park will close to traffic on Thursday 3 and Friday 4 October for emergency road repair work.
HOW WILL THE WORK AFFECT ROAD USERS?
The Alpine Way will be closed from around 2.5 kilometres west of the Thredbo entrance at Friday Drive to Tom Groggin. Motorists are advised to make alternative travel arrangements.
While the road is currently safe to use, this work is essential to prevent further damage and ensure the road remains safe to travel on.
The road will close to all traffic for a period of 36 hours from 6am Thursday 3 to 6pm Friday 4 October, weather permitting. Motorists are advised to avoid travelling toward this western section of Alpine Way during the closure period as there is no suitable detour route.
The weather in the NSW Alpine region is unpredictable and repair work must be carried out under suitable weather conditions. The work may be rescheduled, for the latest traffic updates, you can call 132 701, visit www.livetraffic.com or download the Live Traffic NSW App.
