Probably easier to go via tumut, but this is certainly feasible. A few years ago we had to go to thredbo when the alpine way was closed. Went there via tumut, back via elliot way. I was going to recommend the motel we've stayed in a few times in Tumut but it's changed names and presumably owners so may have changed. Now called Harriet House
Currently in Tumut (from Melb) road wise nothing to report so far, all good. Left at 4pm and arrived at 10 with a half hour stop. There was a bit of traffic out of Melb as you'd expect. The fun bit is in the morning, will report back then. Staying at the Tumut Valley Hotel, which is absolutely fine for a nights rest.
Long & slow, and currently may have sketchy ice patches and windblown - either chains or engaged 4X4, slow speeds & chunky tyres.
OK then Tumut to Thredbo leaving at 6am arrived 9am, great drive, beautiful sunrise / moon set, loads of snowy views from the Cumberland Ranges on. Good road, definately recommend at the minute. But do becareful of them critters.
I reckon the Snowy Mts Hwy from Yarrangobilly/Sawyers Hill to the Monaro Hwy is one of the funnest drives around.
Latest update from online app. Good effort if they get it done. The road is expected to open around the middle of the day on Monday 19 August 2019.
KHANCOBAN TO TOM GROGGIN: Alpine Way is now open after the earlier land slip. Amazing work getting it cleared. Just in time for my trip up tomorrow night.
