Does anybody know the condition of the Alpine way between Thredbo and Tom Groggin?

    Alpine Way Area

Alpine Way - The road is open to Thredbo. There are icy stretches from the Cascades to the loading ramp.

From the LiveTraffic App just now.

Its sealed road. It windy and narrow with lots of blind corners between Khancoban and Tom Groggin.

It can sometime be closed in foul weather due to rock slides, tree falls. It is cleared regularly in the snow season. It typically holds ice between the loading ramp and Dead horse gap for along time as it is not salted. Therefore its fun to drive up hill but i bit sketchy going downhill.

May be an earth loading ramp on the side of the road there. Why is it the wattles? the cascades? They put signs up at all these locations about 8 years ago. Same time they put one at "Pilots Lookout" (SIC).

I guess you're either taking about the wattles, or Siberia. I'd guess Siberia since that's where there was an old road clearing depot.

They put the signs up as the traffic reports would refer to these areas but not many people who drove it (or might get the most benefit from road reports) knew where these locations are.

Given the challenge in getting signs put up for areas that might not have a GNB name, I can live with the spelling.

From the GNB's Guidelines for the determination of place names:

    5. An apostrophe mark shall not be included in geographical names written with a final ‘s’, and the possessive ‘s shall not be included e.g. Georges River not George’s River. Apostrophes forming part of an eponymous name shall be included (e.g. O’Connell Plains).
    http://www.gnb.nsw.gov.au/__data/as...nes_for_the_determination_placenames_2018.pdf

    We got rules for everything.

A few years ago, via Column 8, I had a little spat with the GNB and DMR over Run o' Waters Creek south of Goulburn. They renamed it to Run of Waters Creek which looked horrible. Last time I looked they compromised with Run -o- Waters Creek.

They never put a sign up on Troy's Corner. First hairpin after Tom Groggin camping area which rendered a hungover friend out of the car reliving every mouthful from the night before in the Khancoban pub. There were many, many witnesses (many who almost needed to join him after that effort) :whistle:LOL

I had a road sign changed once, I grew up on Kilfeera Road and we had our wedding there. But the signpost had been updated and it read Kilferra Road. I wanted to get it right for the wedding invites (last century, no widespread internet) so I rang the council and had them confirm it was indeed Kilfeera and they actually updated the new sign really quickly!

Looking at the contours on the map it appears that the loading ramp is around 1150m elevation, so when the road conditions report on 2XL/Snow FM says chains are required from the loading ramp it will give a good indication as to the snow level on the western side of the range.

ice on fine days is the bigger issue - sometimes several days after the last snowfall because of no salting the road.

Is that due to environmental issues or just a money thing?

Potentially a lot of salt to wash into the Creek systems?

Cool! I still see him & B down there every couple of years or so. Said night was an end of season let your hair down weekend in Khancoban. It was either 97 or 98 so also a bit of emotional release after the slide. Very fun, very messy! Good times indeed.

    Nah

I would like to make paths where people actually walk across a park.

Or small ramps where a wheelchair or bike might benefit from it.

Or fk trees off from in the way of lookouts (it’s not a lookout if you can’t look out).

Or any of those things where you think ‘bugger me they *almost* got this right’.

But do it as guerrila actions

Enlightened councils put off forming pats in new parks until a track has been worn by users, it makes for interesting paths!
