Lucky we got thru yesterday. It is a major drop in an area evidently worked on over the last few years.

Looks like they needed stronger fencing mesh to hold their dirt and rocks back.

    Nature finds a way.

Especially with moisture hitting in constantly.

Mesh isn’t so much to hold it in (that’d be rock bolts or nails) but to contain rocks and have them fall in a controlled manner rather than onto cars. The mesh is open at the bottom.

Heading up to Perisher from Melbourne for the first time next week on Wednesday. Let’s try Perisher they said! Had intended to take this route. Hoping it’s opened in time but not holding my breath. Looking for the best shortest route option as a fall back if anyone could help.

Which side of Melbourne are you on?

If the east or south head out the Monaro Highway, Snowy River Way, Barry Way, Kosi Road and the other end of the Alpine Way (if using the ski tube).

If north or west, Hume, Snowy Mountains Highway, Kosi Road and the other end of the Alpine Way.

I’m in Essendon so the Hume option is preferred. Google maps indicates an option which turns off the Hume Hwy at Woomargama and cuts through to Mannus. Has anyone taken this route?

Hi there, just checked this route online and it’s indicating approx 7.5 hr for travel time. Is this about right. I reside in Essendon and testing this trip versus a Hune Hwy option. Have you got any options to consider? Tx

That sounds about right. I went from Bundoora, returning via Cann River last Friday. We stopped off in Dalgety for lunch (If you can hold out to Bombala, it's recommended), and spent the night in Sale, as we left earlier than expected on Friday due to my wife coming unstuck on Thursday.

Travel time for us was around 4.5 hours to Sale, and 2.5 hrs from Sale to home.

Thanks. I am considering leaving early evening and travelling as far as possible for an overnight pit stop. I’m concerned about kangaroos so need to be mindful how far I travel inland. Considering getting to Orbost hopefully. That would leave around 3.5hrs to Jindabyne in the morn. That’s the plan for now anyway.

This looks great but travel time would be an issue. Road would be challenging I suspect during winter. I’m guessing the route through Orbost and Cann River that others have suggested is preferred even if coming from Essendon.

Elliot Way is pretty straight....then road bends a little as you negotiate Ravine Valley Floor...as you pass the power stations you run into snow but the ploughs normally keep it well under control as it’s access to Cabramurra and Selwyn Ski Resort. So snow driving not too bad with less numpties encounter till you hit Kiandra and the Snowy Mts Highway. The Snowy Mts Highway is the alternative way into Kiandra But you have to go further up the into Mexican Country(NSW).
