So Amazon is patenting a drone lift... like a snowmobile tow.

“ Ski lifts may become consigned to history with Amazon in the early stages of designing a drone that could drag people up a mountain using a tow handle.

The firm has patented plans to develop a drone that releases a retractable rope that skiers can summon using their smartphone. The drone will fly to their location and lower the rope, so the skier can hold on to the handle while the drone flies slowly up to the top of the slope.”

    Side-country boom anyone?

Ski lft companies might not be so keen, but Companies with head leases would be open to the idea.

It would be handy right now for those residents of Buller, Falls and Hotham as they are out for their “1 hour of daily exercise”

It will never get off the ground in Oz, there is no way the NPWS would allow it. Imagine these things flying all over the main range. No, this idea won't fly.

I can see it getting a run in Canada & the USA - resorts with a large footprint who can expand access without putting in fixed infrastructure.

However, current fixed lifts with dedicated groomed pistes reduce risk and enable consumer management- but it will meet a niche’ market.

Avalanche and terrain risk - there’s a thing.

I'm no electrician or engineer, but batteries on these things weigh a lot and they would draw an awful lot of power to drag a skier up a 1 in 5 slope. So even with the very best (and most expensive) battery technology, I suspect one of these might be good for a single short run of around 200 metres?

But I hope I'm wrong. I'd love to able to use a tethered drone to do multiple laps of Cairn Gully on Mt Bogong or Little Austria on the Main Range. Better still, on my winter visits to southern Tassie, I wouldn't have to gamble on whether they had enough volunteers to open the Rodway Tow at Mt Mawson!

The main issue I can see, which may be able to be resolved by good programming, is having designated "up" lanes, otherwise you will have massive conflict between those going up and those coming down.

I can't see it working. Hanging on to something with your hands? Ever seen people hanging on to a t-bar with their hands to get up the tow line? Doesn't work too well.

Which part of this idea fits in with Amazon’s laser focus on making money at volume from scalable products?

Suspect some engineer used his holiday time during Covid to read some good sci-fi and then sketch rapidly hatched plans sufficiently that the PR department could hit a few positive-sentiment media mention KPI’s by sharing his pitch deck with Vice

Can not take this too seriously.

Patent just means someone has had an idea. It doesn't even mean working drawings, let alone a prototype.

I think you're not far off.... if you're designing drones to deliver a heavy package, may as well consider what other uses that drone could be put to.

Disgusting but thankfully it's more tech upotian click bait crap, recycling recent ideas because innovation is hard. Would never work as the workhorse of a resort.

Would love to see how they go with a good blow on, up Antons. Windhold would take a on a whole new meaning with these things dropping "cargo" and returning to the safety of their bases before they got tossed about.

Noooo. The mountains are a peaceful place. That is one of the reasons I love being in them and why I like getting BC.

Can you imagine how annoying 20 drones pulling punters up a hill would be. Buy some skins.

So I had a quick look at this.

Seems like pure fantasy to me. And good luck getting a patent for it. Combining known elements for an expected and obvious outcome is not patentable.

And I love how they article talks about how they "won" a patent. What on the chocolate wheel?

If the average punter wanted to be dragged up the slopes, resorts would be installing a lot more surface lifts.

Not really. To make the point about the absurdity of the Innovation patent system one of the big firms applied for an innovation patent for a wheel. Innovation patents go through a, mmm, administrative check before being granted. But they are not enforceable unless they are examined.

Pro tip - if you hit your article cap on smh/the Age, you can just edit the url to get the same article on one of their other sites:

    it is just a patent.

Dumb one at that currently, but if technology improves to make it possible the patent owner can then take payment.
