Just in the last week I've heard of two skiers who crashed and injured themselves on what they'd decided was to be the last run. I left an ACL in New Zealand similarly.
I believe that deciding it's going to be the last run has an effect that predisposes to a fall.
Feel free to speculate as to why.
It may be that the decision shifts part of your attention elsewhere. Couple that with tiredness and the more difficult conditions that often apply later in the day and ....

So the implication is: decide at the bottom.

Saying "one last run" is pretty much banned in MTB circles... can only suggest "another?"

Haha so true, I like to finish on a good run, one where everything clicked, good turns, good lines.

But chasing this is difficult, as you say fatigue sets in, non conducive conditions and boom there goes the body

Same thing happens touring....heading back to camp/ hut/ car is inevitably the most hazardous segment of the trip.

when you are at the top say out loud 2 more runs!

Then when at the bottom of that second last run, call time and you’ve tricked the jinx

Early in season 2016 I watched a friend get knocked out cold from a small fall on the cruise down Twynam Ck toward the illawong bridge. Doing maybe 10km/h on a pitch of 5 degrees max. Just not paying attention, caught an edge and hit the ground hard. She's comfortably ridden a couple of the easier western faces lines in carruthers area, so not a jerry by any means.

That trip was cursed though... I also managed to lose a helmet into a creek

Yes, it quite often becomes the last run.

My last run was also my first run a few years back. It also became my last run for the season (in July).

Our last run in NZ many years ago became the last run after littlest one face planted some ice. Interesting looks at the airport with a bruised and swollen face on a 5 year old!

The day ending or season ending accident always happens on the last run of the day, even if it wasn’t intended to be. It’s easy to see how superstition leaches in.

Having said that I rarely call last run.
Ocassionally will say ‘let’s run it in’ when the day on the hill is over and you are literally just skiing the cat track back or bunny hill home.

Of course when you crash and injure yourself it's going to be the last run. That's a truism.
But the story goes like this: 'I had decided to ... and then....' Nothing to do with superstition.

    Of course.
But how many times do people say “I decided to go home... and I went home.”

    I get it.
And I am not free of the superstition.
I just think it’s one of those silly self confirming things that isn’t really a thing but everyone thinks it is and is superstitious anyway.

That is why I don't ever say last run or say I will do just one more.

I just say again and leave it open ended that there might be more agains and only call the end once I am at the bottom. That way I can avoid the deciding it will be the last one voodoo

In my world there is never any such thing as a "last run" ... if I feel tired, I just quit and go to the bar, if that means leaving the blokes Im skiing with ... so be it, I get beers first :)

I don't think it is superstitious. I think it is a drop in vigilance. Momentary subconscious inattention to all those autonomous behaviours.

    Something like this ^
    e.g.
Last run: "Hmmm where did I park the car?", "Where should we go for dinner tonight?", "Should I get my skis waxed?", "I think there were ski demos on tomorrow"

Calling last wave in the surf always seems to result in 45mins paddling around trying to get that last wave

Have never had the last run crash but have had a few season ending injuries, always in spring late season

^^^^^^ Yes Yes Yes every f'king time.

Even if you're the only one out and have just had twenty waves in 5 minutes, as soon as you say it out loud the ocean goes flat or twenty froffing grommets attack the line up.

Ski buddy works at Cooma hospital and she tells me most of their business at this time of the year comes from either last run or first run.
Last year I saw a chap go no more than 25m from the top of Perisher V8 on his first run, first day - broken leg.

I can claim both first and last.
First day on snow for the winter..park car. Walk to Friday Flat put on skis, go 10 m ; fall and break arm.
Approaching final descent before ascending to Dainers Gap where car is parked after a day exploring the hills thereabouts...do ACL

Broke my collar bone in NZ. Waiting to use the loo on the flight home, a woman pointed at me and said to her kids "That's why we didn't ski in NZ". I felt most embarrassed.

Sorry to cast doubt upon those stats but anyone suffering from a major fall will in all practicality be on their ‘last run’. Be it 10 am or 5pm.

That. Said, my wife did her ACL on Boot Hill at The Cow on her (absolutely last run). What a fun few months that was!! /:-/l

One of my sons, aged 14 at the time broke his wrist on day one of a 3 week thredbo holiday.

The break was such that asthe doc casted him up, told him if he bumped it again he would need surgery.

He became our official photographer for 3 weeks

my five year old learnt not to say last run on the weekend.

Did that on the the park down to easy rider. Hit the second jump landed forward then cartwheeled on his head. Luckily no permanent damage but he didn't want to go off the jumps again after that.
