Travelling to Tokyo on a Jetstar Dreamliner. Apparently you can use the USB input to play your own (free) movies off your USB stick, and watch on the seatback screen. Anyone managed to do this? Do you need to save stuff as particular file types in order for this to work?
Apparently you can stream off usb stick. Just make sure it's a standard format like .avi or .mp4 should work. The port is low powered so don't expect to charge anything very quickly.
Is it only the Dreamliner with seatback screens? I thought most J* planes had no screens and you had to pay for extra for the ipads?
I flew over (currently here in Japan) on the new Dreamliner..I tried plugging my external HDD in but didn't like it..USB stick may be different. I seen plenty with phones plugged in. If your phone has an sd card maybe try loading on to that and see if it works. Another coolish feature the new Dreamliners have is dimming windows..no conventional blinds at all. there is a button below the window you just press up or down to dim or lighten.
You'll find some USB ports on LED screens etc get wigged out by too much data on a HDD. I think they can only access maybe 32 gig max..
You are not taking a laptop or tablet? The screen resolution and audio on those will be vastly superior and no need be worried it will work or not as you can test before. If you don't have either of these, then I'm sorry but I don't like your chances. I know you can play your own audio through the USB, but I've not ever seen one that allows you to play your own movies. That said, I also have not flown on the new Dreamliner too often, so maybe it is different. Why don't you give j* a call and ask?
I can't imagine they'd want you to know, otherwise no one would buy their entertainment pack. They are very low powered and can't spin up a physical hdd. I have heard stories of people getting on 9 hour flights with 10% battery and charging their phones. After 9 hours it's only @ 90%. But like Trappers said, you're better off with your own tablet or laptop.
I'll take pics of the windows on the way home..although I have a night flight so will only work closer to landing. It does state they are low power USB's..Yeah I had my tablet on me so just watched tv shows off that. No interesting movies running on the planes at this point in time..well nothing I was interested in.
I love how all movies etc are free on your way over but you have to pay on the return flight back to Oz..Lucky it was a night flight and I didn't care for their movie selection.
Try the last 4 years; when they had the sbs doco on: 'miss nude Australia 2008'!! Eeerrrhhhmygaaaad downhill from there The doco section is always worth checking out
Yep pay per view..might be an idea to stare out the window. Docos aren't so bad, I have seen some decent ones.
ah What annoyed me goign to NZ this year was that you have to have downloaded the app before you got on the plane to use the free inflight wifi... Ummmm - why? I didn't know it until the announcement on the aircraft... helpful (and yeah I tried but ran out range on airport free wifi...)
If you had an android phone/tablet, you would not have had that problem. You can download the apk on board if its android.
My most recent long haul was with Emirates on a 777 ( I think) The selection of movies, tv, doco's & music was enormous and the USB charged up the ipad at about the same pace as a 1amp charger (ipad's ship with a 2amp charger).
handy hint for all future travel: download the apps now I’ve already got Qantas, JAL, Finnair and Qatar sorted, and I’m not going until late Jan
ALso the res of files, bitrates, codecs etc Similiarly to dvd players in head rests etc .. we have a pair in the 4wd for the kids, SD or USB .. but i had to re-encode all the movies i wanted onto the 32gb card down to some dumb dumb 480p low bitrate version, or the units would just freeze. Such a variable thing though, would all depend what CPU / smarts are in the screen I guess.
