Coming from Weatherzone with no likes I have experienced some mixed feelings about like counts. On one hand it is great to get regular likes for my posts, and I have more of a feeling that my posts are valued than I did on Weatherzone. On the other hand I get anxious about when I should like other posts. My natural inclination is to be a lot more sparing with my likes than many other users seem to be and I worry (only a little) that others might notice I'm not generous with my likes.

And just this morning in The conversation is an interesting article on an experiment by facebook to hide the like count, although I think the issues that facebook are trying to address don't seem to be much of an issue in this forum.

edit: attached image has nothing to do with the post and I can't see how to get rid of it.

Even though I give and I receive, I don't particularly like them. I think it encourages a conformity of opinion. On all manner of things: he who has the most likes holds the high moral ground.

I like being able to like someone’s comment.
It stops you feeling like you are posting in a vacuum.

I will like a comment because I agree with it, or to show my support. Often I’ll comment as well, but not always, so I think likes add value.

This isn’t instagram which is populated by millennials hunting for likes. It’s a completely different beast.

likes can mean different things. sometimes it's agreement, sometimes it's just a thanks for posting that. In a serious discussion I might like an opposing opinion that has been well put.

The only rule is never like DJOTD

I even put up a poll about it last year

I use the Like function if (and wait for it) I like something.

If someone posts something that I think is well crafted, or thought provoking, funny, or a good photo, then I will like it.

Hopefully the recipient will be encouraged to do more of the same

I will not like something purely because social convention expects it

This site is my only social media presence. Until I started posting here I couldn't understand or appreciate my kids angst about their social media personas and being "liked". Now that I feel it happening in myself ("better go check ski.com.au forums...right, has anyone liked that seriously high quality and witty post of mine yet? NO! WTF is wrong with you people! Hang on. WTF is wrong with me...?!") I can relate to and empathise with their angst. Better still I can give them advice around "like angst" and they sort of even listen because they know I'm on here. So wierdly, I like what this great community's "likes" have done for my parenting. Now hurry up and like this post you bastards. Someone...ANYONE...!

The best stat is a users likes/posts ratio.

Are they posting useful stuff or just filling space?

    Mine is 0.64.

If you’re live posting in an AFL or sport thread you’re engaging in a fast-moving multi-person conversation with very many short posts - lots of posts, few likes.

If you post a trip report with awesome pics - a few posts but potentially very many likes.

Because the forum has multiple types of threads - fast-moving convo, torrid and dense bear pit slag matches, and even DJOTD there’s no single metric that’s self-explanatory.

Maybe for some how many people have you on ignore could be a telling metric..

And then there are some anomalies - the Perisher convo threads are dense with many posters and visitors while the Hotham and Falls threads have a small number of regular posters, and the Buller threads are again more dynamic.

Some threads represent a cluster of people who know each other well off-line, while others are a wide array of diverse people. Some threads are more open to new posters, others less so.

And then there is weather and the mega-threads....what’s not to like....

Like “farming” needs to be stamped out on the forum. Gratuitous, obsequious, mirroring cheaply amusing posts that add nothing and are designed to simply garner cheap likes are a blight! Can I get a hell yeah?

The quantum of likes doesn't bother me.
What concerns me is folk who take note of who liked what post...
1)Life is too short for that shit
    And
    2) HTF do you attribute what motivated someone to like a post.
