Our room had a bay window which protrudes beyond the main roof, a bad design. Middle of the night we thought someone was smashing at the window only to realize it was snow and ice falling from main roof onto bay window, Extremely loud not just a quit thud of snow landing on the ground. This went on for 2hrs than constant dripping onto said window for rest of the night. Complained to management in the morning after not sleeping and she could not be less interested, said basically we are in the snow and get over it, Once they have your money the Management are very disinterested in your stay. Avoid at all cost.
Classic Aussie default customer service. Talk to hand. They only understand boycotts. By the way did you mean 'Alberg'? Isn't Alzberg down in Mansfield?
Would be better if the building design was different, yes but she has a point, you are over reacting, snow melt is part and parcel of staying in the snow Alberg has a lot going for it Would put up with a bit of dripping the fantastic position on the hill I have found the staff really quite helpful and good humoured The lunch menu in the front bar to be great I would recommend the place without hesitation
Arlberg Mt Buller? Alzburg Mansfield? If you are telling people to not stay somewhere, it’s always best to get the name right
What exactly did you expect the management to do? Get out a scaffold and redesign the roof? Or were you just having a winge?
Your right , having a whinge . Management know about the problem but doesn't tell potential bookings, happy to take bookings and hope no one complains. Make a purchase and it does not perform you get a refund.
With all due respect. Your'e in a alpine enviroment. The issue was cause by the weather and snow melting and hitting the glass. If it was cold and snowing ..wouldn't be an issue If it was clear and the snow melt had finished. Wouldn't be an issue. Its uncommon for above zero temps to occur at night. Hence its not usually an issue.
Hi Doonzah, accept snow and ice falls , buildings are designed for it to fall on the ground and not onto a another part of the building.
So you expect management to say... Occasionally , due to weather... Room........ may have snow shed upon its bay window at night? *snow doesn't shed very often at night
Quite right. The only acceptable response to the issue was immediate demolition and rebuilding of the entire structure.
I'm sure it was . Ever been in a 3 storey A frame house when its sheding a foot of snow every few hours? Over shingles ? Now thats loud Roofalanche
I have stayed in the very rooms you are are talking about and I have had someone in the room struggle with the dripping / noise The only possible recourse would have been changing rooms if one was available, this may have not been possible, either way and as others have said it is something that can reasonably be expected in an alpine environment and not unexpected. I have stayed at the Alberg many times ( and will again this season ) and as I said ( dripping aside ) it is a pretty decent accom establishment on the mountain Next time have 2 extra wines and you wont hear a single drip !!!!
Lucky they were not staying there in years gone past over a weekend when crap tribute bands were thrashing unabated..........
Give the guy a break. Yes, it's the alpine environment, etc.... but, being kept awake all night in a room you just paid a motza for, because of bad design, is definitely whingeable (correct spelling) in my book. It seems the real problem was the response of the management - which, at least in Tim's view, fell short of what might be expected. Tim won't be back, and neither (maybe) will his friends. A loss of market for the Arlberg.
(Reading through these posts backwards...) Ok, so did they tell the management about it? How many times has the management been told about it?
I get shitty with hotels / apartments that have crap sound proofing, doors that slam, sounds of other people’s toilets flushing. Very hit and miss and often not related to the cost either. Never bothered to complain because exactly SFA can be done about building design. Would mention it in a review though (which this thread kind of is) Would be nice if review sites added “sound proofing and building peacefulness” as one of the rated values , never seems to be though
You pay for a room to sleep in. If reservation staff know there'll be loud noises it's simple courtesy to warn you before they take your money.
This!! One of the rooms in our apartment is particularly noisy due to proximity to the pub across the road. I always keep ear plugs for friends who can’t sleep with the noise. But noises related to snowfall, shed or melt are very unpredictable and most skiers and boarders just roll with it. I think the OP was hoping for a refund or discount, which realistically was never going to happen.
Most of the Arlberg apartments are privately owned, and operate under a body corporate, any change to the building will be near impossible to make. We don't have bay windows, but the snow/ice dropping of the trees on to the roof above the bedroom can be annoying for sure. Was it management or one of the staff you spoke with ? The sad issue is, most building designers in Australia have little to no understanding of how to design and build in the Alpine environment. Just to add to the issues, the building design has to be approved by other government departments with often less knowledge and place restrictions on the designs that make the situation worse. Over the years I've learnt about places that work for me and those that don't. I recall (no names) one place I stayed at here in the early eights has the bins full of glass emptied at 06:30, which sounded like 44 gallon drums tipped in to the rubbish truck. That was my last booking there, even if it was a great location. You should send an email to Al2b3rg with an apology, even with the subject changed, once anything is on the web, it's there for good. And now a search will link people to this thread.
The only reason anyone searching for Alzb**g will find this thread, is because you used it's name in this thread again. Don't use the name. Search engines won't find it. You also need to send them an apology. Everyone who clicked or posted in this thread, generated traffic to this thread and thus promoted it. You all need write apology letters. Infact ......... everyone using the internet needs to write apology letters.
I reckon all you guys are way to hard on Tim. The issue of course is the poor customer service and not the design of the building and when you spend a ton of money to visit a tourist destination, nothing wrong with expecting a decent level of customer service. Thanks for sharing Tim.
So ......... true to my word. I have written an apology letter to the Alzb**g, for both clicking on, and posting in this thread, which mistakenly criticized the Alzb**g. Please vet it before I send it. Dear Alzb**g, Snow falls down due to gravity. But snow was wrongly accused of falling down at your Hotel. Please forgive snow. It knows not what it does. Lots of Love Astro.
Can somebody please remind me when the last time snow melt was an issue at Alzberg, Mansfield.......... oh and @TOFF = since this is a spelling pedant thread it's "way too hard" matey. FFS an edumacated fella like you should be able to get that right.....
Had the same snow falling off the roof onto an awning at Thredbo Hotel, massive crash in the night. Requested a room on the other side next time, easy fix.
Many things have changed while you’ve been in Canada But as most of my posting is done on mobile device, I am at the mercy of Steve Jobs and his merry men. According to then I spend a lot of time ‘forking’ about.
I was there and saw your discussion with the lady who runs the Arlberg Tim and remember it very well at reception. We were staying there at the same time as you and your initial post dates above which was the same week we were there suggest that it was certainly you that I saw arguing with management. She stated that she would have been more than happy to move you to anohter room but she simply did not have a spare room for you anywhere in the hotel so what could she do ? What did you expect from her if she didn't have a spare room to move you to ? Get up on the roof with a shovel during the night to shift excess snow ? Suggesting that you were going to take it to Mount Buller Resort Mangement and Consumer Affairs and / or ACCC didn't help your case either regardless of your attitude and how tired you might have been. We ALWAYS take earplugs with us when we travel for the unexpected hotel noise - no point missing out on sleep and being grumpy for days due to lack of sleep for $5 worth of earplugs - especially when hitting the snow costs quite a bit of $$ investment in the first place. We absolutely love The Arlberg for convenience and find it a great place to stay on the mountain. Not the cheapest option but very happy just the same with the overall package that they provide.
