I am blaming @Kletterer and @dawooduck for putting this idea in my head...

As I understand it, if you buy a 'around the world' airline ticket, you need to keep flying in the same direction; ie you can go east to west or west to east. You can't backtrack.

So, what might this look like ???

Leg 1 - Sydney to Tokyo - Ski Honshu
Leg 2 - Tokyo to Zurich - Ski Austria or somewhere equally nice
Leg 3 - Zurich to US or Canada
Leg 4 - Fly to Alaska
    Leg 5 - Fly Home

I could ski some BC in Japan with some forumites
Maybe do some touring in Europe with some other forumites
Visit some coffee shops in North America with @Astro66
Scare myself senseless with some heli-skiing with PNH in Alaska

Might see if I can come up with a costing / schedule to see if this is do-able for 2020 :)

How much time to you have? Ideally you would be starting in Japan in January and finished in AK in April.

But AK needs to be done late season (April) so best left to end.

Yeah, a 3-4 month trip would be ideal, but real life commitments will mean something a lot less than that. If I was to do this trip, it would be a series of compromises. Seeing who is skiing what and where would also skew the schedule.

I like everyone have thought about this a lot.
I would start in Japan in January, ski North America in February and Europe in March. Europe would be fine conditions wise in February but it would be best to avoid their school holiday season.
Japan in that time frame is easy - great conditions assured in Hokkaido. February in North America is prime winter and the bases have built up and even the lower elevation hills should ski well. Europe in March is max snow pack height and there’s oodles of north facing high elevation mountains to choose from.

How difficult is it to get flights from AK to Aus? Presumably direct is not an option so would this violate the 'keep going West' rule?

So about 7 years ago i had 3 weeks of forced xmas closer.

I had a few free beds to choose from.

In September rtn to the USA was $2600, RTN to Europe was $1800.

    RTW was $1600

Note you pay more due to taxes per stop. so i limited it to 3

    SYD/FRA/SFO/SYD - i paid a separate ticket SFO/SEA(for Whis)/SFO - it was a couple hundred.

PNH heli-skiing in Alaska only starts in mid-Feb so I'll probably need to drop this idea.

What heli-skiing is around in North America that's good late January / early February ? If it is near a Mountain Collective resort, extra bonus as I have the Thredbo and Tomamu season passes which give some discounts.

Daylight hours are just way to short in Alaska in mid winter, hence mid-Feb start. Even then that is still early, so March/April are best up that way for daylight & weather.

Should be plenty of Canadian Ops going in Jan/Feb though. Friends of mine regularly go cat-skiing around that time which is quite a bit cheaper but still get plenty of good skiing. Doesn't need the clear days you need to fly and great if you like tree skiing.

There is absolutely no reason you need to pay that much!

The best thing about RTW is that you don't get holiday fluctuations prices anywhere near normal return flights (which is why I got such a great deal over Christmas)

Can't remember the one they were at last year. He has been with a few different Ops in Canada and Northern US. From memory Selkirks and Schweitzer amongst others. Had several years at Revelstoke before they opened the resort.

I remembered they sent me their proposed schedule for Canada & Japan for Jan, Feb.
    Went like this:
    Jan 5 - Jan 6 Spokane
    Jan 6 - Jan 9 Red Mountain
    Jan 9 - Jan 15 Selkirk
    Jan 15 - Jan 17 Kelowna
    Jan 17 - Jan 20 Monashee
    Jan 20 - Jan 21 Vernon
    Jan 21 - Jan 22 Spokane
    Jan 23 - Jan 25 Tokyo
    Jan 25 - Jan 28 Geto Kogen
    Jan 28 - Jan 29 Morioka
    Jan 29 - Feb 2 Amahari
    Feb 2 - Feb 3 Morioka
    Feb 3 - Feb 6 Tazawako
    Feb 6 - Feb 7 Morioka
    Feb 7 - Feb 14 Niseko
    Feb 14 - Feb 21 Kiroro
So they should be back home now. Cat skiing would have been in the Selkirks and Monashees. I'll ask him how it went and any recommendations. These guys are retired so have a bit of free time.

Heard back from my friend. Last few years he has been at Selkirk Snowcat Skiing & Monashee Powder Snowcat. He says the Selkirks were very good this year and Monashees good in the trees. A friend of his also recommended Mustang Powder & Great Northern and also 'Last Frontier Heliskiing'.

They also had good snow in Tohoku but also reported a big increase in foreign tour groups after the powder and annoying the ski patrol by skiing under the lift.

At Sahoro one of the instructors broke his leg skiing under the lift after he ducked a rope. In addition to the ski patrol getting him to care, they pulled his season pass. The resort wouldn't give him a replacement, so he had to buy a day pass each day after his leg mended and he went back to work.

Story told to me by an off duty ski instructor as we were discussing where was the best tree skiing around the resort. Can neither confirm nor deny any ropes were involved .

    Just heard back from RoundAboutTravel

According to them, airlines release seats 11 to 11.5 months in advance. With that in mind, the best time to plan this trip is late March once my return date opens up in the system and entire trip can be priced.

My current route is a good fit or the Lufthansa/SWISS round the world fare :) This fare would come in around the $2k mark, way cheaper than oneworld.

Finnair RTW is worth looking at too. Finnair ticket but codeshares with Qantas where necessary. Price is around the $2k mark as well.

Thats hilarious... Actually RTW is the easiest way to book earlier. There are actually fares that are able to be booked 18mths out (ie the RTW is valid for 18mths.)

Just did Finnair business return to Europe. Rate highly (A350 both directions). Downside was Qantas codeshare to HK on way out and from Singapore on way back in tired A330. Was not that expensive.
