Well, I've reached out to a skiing buddy in Utah, applied for long service leave and getting a quote for a RTW ticket. :)

    Rough itinerary

4-5 Jan - Fly out of Canberra or Sydney to Tokyo
6-10 Jan - Ski Honshu Japan
11-12 Jan - Fly out of Tokyo to Zurich or Munich
13-19 Jan - Ski Lech Austria
    20-24 Jan - Ski Austrian destination #2
25-26 Jan - Fly out of Zurich or Munich to a USA West Coast Hub (eg Denver Colorado), then fly to Salt Lake City
27-31 Jan - Ski Utah resorts
1-2 Feb - Fly to Vancouver
3-6 Feb - Ski Whistler (the 4 day camp)
8-9 Feb - Fly from Vancouver to Canberra or Sydney

    :)

    Jealous.
Some would find that too much hassle but I enjoy a busy holiday and moving around keeps it fresh.
How much for the ‘around the world’ ticket at that time of year?

Go for it, Mr T! I can highly recommend the Camp at Whistler - that just took my skiing to another level (not hard!).

Stretch it out a bit, take it up to 8 weeks so you get a chance to breath and smell the roses. Sounds awesome. Super jealous.

Awesome sounding trip, very jelly! (I skied Utah this past January: fave resort Solitude admittedly with deep powder/storm conditions and Snowbird, serious terrain, big mtn feel). What’s the $ damage in the airfares? Would like to treat myself and +1 one day.

So I now need to start thinking about accommodation and transport.

@Nozawaman, are you fully booked out for 6-10 Jan yet ? Room for 1 more ?

Umm, that lift goes between Sugarbush and the formerly independent Mt. Ellen. Even knowing it's coming, going over the top and heading down is a bit of a surprise. MRG is farther down the road. The single chair is the unique feature, plus the fact that it's for skiers only.

    From Mt. Ellen towards Sugarbush

@Sandy, if you had to pick 1 area in Honshu (excluding Hakuba) to base yourself and you were skiing solo for a week 6-10 Jan, what would be on your shortlist resort / accommodation wise ? Somewhere with a bit of tree skiing potential off a lift would be great.

BTW, I'm still blaming you for getting me hooked on O/S ski trips after your Hakuba / Wadano Village recommendation back in 2014 ;)

I am envious ......this planned trip sounds hectic but that’s a good thing and you get to see and ski in such a variety of areas whilst still fit enough to do so.
We sometimes leave these trips until we are not in our prime peak fitness and we get hurt.
I for one would have loved to ski Whistler in winter as I did so much enjoy it in summer.....same for Alaska it was stunningly beautiful but again no skiing for me.

Pointy end flying ..........it’s like having the best sex and then going back to average when you are in cattle class........you will crave to fly that way again and again LOL

Costs ........what is the cost of the RTW ticket for this trip ?

What sort of skiing do you want to be doing? And for solo, accom always has to take into account singles.

This will be the first week skiing of a 5 week trip, so starting off on groomers (that will probably last all of 2-3 runs) then heading off-piste if conditions allow. I'll be on my AT skis and will take some skins as well. So some skiing in the trees accessible by lifts would be ideal.

After a week in Japan I'm going to go and scare myself senseless in Sankt Anton- Lech and Fiss- Serfaus.

Plenty of terrain for that in Serfaus. Accomodation in Fiss-Serfaus not so cheap though as @Kletterer suggested, so depends on your budget. But if you are looking for something better value I did find a nice Frühstückspension in Ried in the valley for €37/night. It is then a 10 min free ski bus trip to the Fiss Waldbahn.

If you don't mind extra travel time (up to an hour each way) you could base at Landeck and have St Anton, Fiss/Serfaus & Ischgl as day trip options as well as a local hill all with free ski buses. I did a day trip to Ischgl from Landeck on my recent trip. Certainly saves on accommodation. But all of those places are worthy of longer stays so you may want to base there. Just need to pay a bit more.

Madarao/Tangram and Myoko ticks all your boxes if there's been plenty of snow in December.

Ok, so I'd suggest Naeba... some easily accessible powder there, and lots of trees at Kagura.

I had suggested Shiga Kogen as it is probably the only Japanese resort of a size to compare with Euro resorts, although still tiny in comparison to St Anton, Fiss-Serfaus (or Saalbach & Gerlos that you already know). It has a wide area though with a good range of elevations and terrain including trees. You could easily spend a week there. I haven't been myself for a very long time, but am considering revisiting. Sandy obviously has the best knowledge of this region.

Geto Kogen in Iwate gets plenty of powder and has opened lots of tree runs in recent years but is smaller, so not sure you would spend a whole week there. Accommodation choices would be a dorm room in the resort, an onsen resort a few kms away or a business hotel in Kitakami with a free ski bus.

Also, not so many people ride powder midweek, so there's lots of it within sight of the Naeba Prince Hotel.

OK, time to start sorting out visas and accommodation for this trip.

The US part needs an ESTA completed. That's been done. I needed to get the contact details of my friend I'm staying with in Utah.

The Canadian part needs a eTA completed. That's been done.

From memory I don't need any visas to get into Japan or Germany.

I've lashed out on some nice accommodation in Whistler.

This place features 6 restaurants and lounges. A sauna and an outdoor hot tub offer guest relaxation. The Whistler Village Gondola is 5 minutes' walk away.

After a long day, guests can relax at the on-site salon and spa, or get re-energized in the 24-hour fitness room. An outdoor heated pool is also on site.

    :)

On the ESTA address, i always but my bestie in CA on there - no matter how many nights I'mnot staying with her! (ie last time i didn't stay a night on her couch) For my boss' i always put in the accom that they are staying at for their next trip - or guess. (sometimes we don't get told til day before they fly out which doesn't work with current process guidelines.)

Apparently you are supposed to go in an edit for every trip (*cough* get stuffed *cough*) but i never have.

PJ used to sign people up for the 1 week course a year in advance. But dat was the 90s.
I did it once, a mate did it for about 6 years in a row.
His group of friends that did it over those years really did enjoy everything.!!!!!!

Don’t discount Naeba - everyone else skiing there is shit. So I had too to bottom pow (apart from having to cross a couple cat tracks) and consistent fall line under the main gondola!
