I love your itinerary. Are you on an Epic or Ikon Pass or anything similar? I'm guessing Epic given Whistler? Does that mean you'll be skiing Park City/Snowbasin while in SLC?
I am currently realistically unable to commit to that much time off work in one hit. I plan to be able to in a few years though. That will coincide with my kids being at an age when they want to hang with their mates and not with their parents so much. Obviously will be much cheaper paying for flights/accom/lift tickets/food for 2 instead of 4.

Those Austria dates have a wealth of great options. Zillertal, Saalbach, , Kitz and the Ski Welt, Ski Amade, Arlberg. Even the smaller hills local to Innsbruck. Hell even the Dolomites are only another couple of hours on the train (past Innsbruck) to Bolzano or Brunich.

I don't know if anyone has asked but how much for those airfares for one person?

I've got the Epic Australia season pass. There's a trip report kicking around here somewhere 18 months or so ago when I skied Zillertal and Saalbach with @Kletterer. Of all the places I've skied, the Austrian resorts are the only ones I stepped off the plane from and would have been quite happy to go back on the next one. So good over there. I used https://www.roundabouttravel.com.au/ to sort out tickets.

I've hit a slight bump in the road in the preparations for this trip, ie I broke my leg back in June and missed the Aussie ski season. I'm now 9 weeks into rehab with 19 to go until the start of the trip. If you asked me a week ago whether I was still going on this trip I wouldn't have been able to give you an answer. This week I've been able to get on an indoor smart trainer and get 100km cycling under the belt which has dramatically improved overall leg strength. So I'm now feeling confident and happy to book more stuff.

Need to sort of accommodation for the Japan and Europe legs:

AM Mon 6 Jan - Transit to Honshu ski area, at this stage probably Naeba
    --- Eat, sleep, ski, repeat
AM Sat 11 Jan - Transit to Tokyo

PM Sat 11 Jan - Transit to Austria ski area #1 (Fiss-Serfaus, stay at Ried in the valley ?)
    --- Eat, sleep, ski, repeat
AM Sat 18 Jan - Transit to Austria ski area #2 (Landeck ?)
-- Eat, sleep, ski (St Anton, Fiss/Serfaus & Ischgl & local hill ?), repeat

    @Sandy, @Untele-whippet, @Heinz, @Kletterer, @Budgiesmuggler :whistle:

Good to here the recovery has speeded up!
Can’t comment on accomodation but we found the Tokyo Airport Ski Shuttle Bus a really easy option. Get on, get dropped at the front door.
No navigating multiple trains then a bus not to the front door.
    Others may disagree

This was where I stayed in Landeck. http://www.gasthof-greif.at
Location is a few mins walk from the town central bus interchange. Beware though location is a bit deceptive. To get to the hotel from the bus stop it is about 60 steps up hill (yes i counted). Got nicely warmed up dragging my gear up there. Ok once you know.

Fantastic to hear! It was more like a giant wall that you hit, rather than a small bump!! It makes such a difference when you can begin to see those gains. Good luck with getting back into the training :)

I have to disagree with the bus. the train is sooo easy. and depending on arrival time into haneda, gosh 7 hr or what ever it is filled me with dread! Train all the way.

I am always Plane, then train, then bus (under sufferance) in order of transport options.

Nagano snowshuttle bus from Tokyo airports doesn't go to Naeba (Naeba is in Niigata Pref).
If your heading to Naeba, the Prince Hotel has the best location. There are other small hotels/pensions etc very close by if you want to save some coin or prefer smaller establishments.
By far the quickest way (couple of hours) is Joetsu Shink from Tokyo to Echigo Yuzawa and then at the Echigo Yuzawa station you board the free Prince Hotel shuttle if you are staying there. If your staying at another establishment in Naeba then its a highway bus ride from Echigo Yuzawa to Naeba which you pay for (740Yen with gear).
If you like buses Prince Hotels runs a direct bus from their Shinagawa Prince Hotel in Tokyo to Naeba Prince Hotel. Bus takes about 4 hours.
We have stayed at this place at Naeba which was really great! 1 minute walk to the lifts, Japanese room, good value.

Great to hear you have reached the tipping point psychologically DSNS. ie: it's on again! The body will follow. If you had to pick an Aussie season to miss, this is it imo.

 Yeah i was quite surprised with what you told me yesterday regarding the training/ rehab activities. A man on a mission. Trip up the hill to Fiss etc is very slow on change over day- Sat. but that can be said for anywhere in Austria.

OK, definitely interested in Naeba and I've emailed the place @Zimbooo suggested. I'm not really a Prince Hotel person and the onsen in the Piccolo looks the goods.

The Europe leg accommodation is sorted thanks to @Heinz. Staying at Ried 12-19 January and Landeck 19-24 January. :)

    Vibe is building :)

You could blindfold Astro, spin him around 10 times and he'd still be able to find the cake/coffee shop in a blinding blizzard.

This has the bus timetables for Tirol. https://fahrplan.vvt.at
If you are staying at Gasthof Greif in Landeck the bus stop you want is Landeck Zentrum. Most of the buses go from the railway station Landeck-Zams (about 5 mins away) then stop there. From Landeck it is around 50 mins to Ischgl, St Anton am Arlberg & Fiss or about 15 mins to Zams Venetbahn (the local hill).

Landeck Zentrum bus station. You can see location of Gasthof Greif at the bottom. The dotted line of Spenglergasse is an uphill set of around 60 steps.

I land at Munich Airport 4:30pm on Saturday.

My accommodation at Ried in Oberinnntal starts Sunday night.

    I note that:
    • Wörgl Hauptbahnhof is 2.5 hrs along the way
    • Wörgl Hauptbahnhof has luggage lockers
    • there are lots of ski fields around Wörgl
    • this is a skiing holiday
    • I like collecting resort trail maps
    See my train of thought...

The Piccolo just had the standard Japanese bathroom.
If you want a dip in the natural brown water onsen it's about 10 minutes walk away into town and costs 900Yen.

Or you could just stay at the Oyada Honjin. They'll drop you off and pick you up every day. Haven't stayed there for a while but I would think its probably more expensive than the Piccolo.

Think it was about $30-$50pp more expensive (breakfast included), can't recall but do remember was more expensive. We chose Piccolo because of the location. There was also another little hotel/bar/restaurant called "Green Star" that was two or three doors up from Piccolo and opposite the stair access to the carpark/lifts that had a good vibe.....had a beer and a feed in there one night, was good.

    @DidSurfNowSki
Further to the Naeba map showing the way to the Onsen, one restaurant really worth dinner is Chanko Tanagawa.
The speciality is Chanko Nabe (Sumo hotpot), there are also other fantastic dishes to try.
Black Sashimi, grilled Octopus, a eggplant dish which was unreal, many others.........seriously good.
I updated the map below with a "Green spot" to show you where it is.
