Yesterday (31 Jan 20) Travel Insurance Direct & World Nomads declared Coronavirus a ‘known’. New policies no longer cover related claims.

Covermore does not cover ‘pandemics’ so you were never covered anyway. Covermore is what you get from most agencies such as Flight Centre and they are usually the insurer behind your banks Visa/MC deal. So check your existing policies.

Claims against flight cancelations will vary greatly between insurers. If the Aust govt cancels flights (eg in/out China) then you are screwed with Covermore even on existing policies. Flights cancelled by airline are more likely to be covered. Existing policies with premium insurers will possibly cover flight cancelations resulting from blanket state instigated directives. But check.

Either way, if you intend to travel OS the next six months, READ THE PRODUCT DISCLOSURE STATEMENT.

Our coverage through MSIG Singapore has stated they will cover anything to wuhan that was booked before January 19, and anything to mainland China booked before January 27. Everything else is still covered until any other announcements happen.

Spoke to 1Cover today. Coronavirus not covered, even if you bought your policy well before cases started appearing. I asked what was the difference between coronavirus and an influenza epidemic, particularly given the bad Japanese flu season last year. Their answer was that the flu is not worldwide, but coronavirus is (?!?!?) and there is a vaccine for the flu that doctors can give you after you have caught influenza (what a goldmine a cure for the flu would be!!!!). In relation to WHO not declaring an epidemic or pandemic (the PDS refers to WHO and DFAT), they had no explanation. I asked them whether they would be emailing all policy holders to inform them of this new, specific advice. They chose not to answer that question. A "complaints manager" will be calling me back....

I also called the Westpac credit card travel insurance line (used a Westpac card to purchase the airfare). They wouldn't cover cancellation, but would cover medicals so long as destination is not on the DFAT "do not travel" or "reconsider your travel" lists. If you paid for flights with a credit card, check your coverage. Regarding 1Cover, I think they got a little nervous when I used the words "class action by affected policy holders" - hence the escalation.

And now that DFAT has “reconsider travel” to every country, I doubt any new policies will be worth more than toilet paper.

I’d suggest all they’re good for is wiping your bum.
